This is the How To Install and Feature video on the Tom Wood's Custom Driveshafts that went under the Autoedit Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JKU. ***Don't forget to watch the end of the video for the code words to get a 10% Discount off of your order! Offer good for six months after this video is posted and on JK driveshafts only.
It is a fairly straight forward installation and can be done in your driveway with a few specific tools you will see used in the video.
While they can generally supply a good fitting drive shaft by application information only, the best fitment is usually obtained by providing a reference measurement for the length. This can easily be done with the stock drive shafts in place and should only take less than a minute’s time to do so. It's kind of like buying a suit... One off the rack may fit OK, but if a tailor made suit costs the same, why not get it tailor made? Second to that, every lift kit... let's say 3.5” in this case... does not necessarily net 3.5” of lift. This Jeep saw an actual lift of 4" after the install.
In addition to that, there are stack tolerances as the vehicle goes down the assembly line. For example; if the engine, transmission and transfer case happen to mount ¼” forward of nominal and the rear differential mounts ¼” rearward of nominal, you have the potential of ½" difference in the length of the drive shaft.
The Tom Wood's Custom Driveshafts kits for the JK are shipped complete with everything needed for installation (except effort and time). This includes all the nuts & bolts, thread locking compound and even the tool needed to grease the center pivot point on the CV assembly.
They took the time to get the information needed to get me the right drive shaft for my particular tire diameter, differential gear ratio and intended use, as opposed to the “this one off the shelf will work” approach that many other manufacturers use.
I opted for the polish & clear coat finish, for appearance. This added a $25.00/ per drive shaft but they really look amazing. It's a shame they get hidden after the install!
I also selected the 1350 series U Joints for the added strength. The cost differential between the 1350 & the 1310 series is only $160.00 / per drive shaft and Tom himself mentioned... would I rather not risk breaking down, rather than breaking down with $160.00 in my pocket.
I couldn't believe how fast they made and shipped these things. You order one day, and they ship the next.
Check this out:
They have a Gold Seal warranty.
www.4xshaft.com/GoldSeal.asp
If you ever break the universal joint, they also cover the damage to the drive shaft. Of course too, if you happen to want different universal joints in the drive shaft, they can do that too, as they are an authorized warehouse distributor for both Spicer and Neapco.
Thanks for watching!

Hey hey. Just thought I'd say thanks for the video! I've been waffling on this upgrade vs other things, so with the "Pinto" discount it was a no-brainer to go ahead. Wow awesome video! I wanted to ask you I have a question I have been thinking of building a custom lift kit. I currently have pro comp shocks that are for a 4 in lift and I have 2 in coil spacers on my stock coil springs. I saw a guy the other day and he had a 3.5 lift kit with 2in spacers and said drive quality was good now I don't know how true that was but I was thinking of kind of doing the same thing but instead doing a control arm bracket as well as caster and Pinon angle brackets to accommodate for the extra 2in spacers and then also getting a better drive shaft to accommodate as well later on. Do you think that would work? the only reason is because I'm trying to find the cheapest most effective way without making something else more expensive break to my jeep jk unlimited. I am really trying lift my vehicle 5-6in I know I'm crazy but I just really like that look and I'll be honest I'm that guy that is a mall Crawler haha so clearance is not important to me I just don't want to break anything with doing a custom lift kit and body spacers look weird to me so that's not an option for me haha

That said, I plan on getting a JKU within 6 months and was wondering if a newb, like myself, could tackle some of these projects. I was wondering if in the description you could put a level of ease gauge. Example: Novice - Intermediate and fuhgeddaboudit. Maybe the tools needed for the project. Great videos, keep up the great work you are doing for the Jeep Newb Community. Thank you sir +autoedit

Hey Autoedit! I have a question that has me stressing out big time lol. I got a JK Sport almost a year ago, so it's almost bone stock still. I want to lift it 2 or 3 inches and get 35s. I don't wheel it much, but I want to join a club eventualy and do some more offroad, but not until the Jeep's more capable. So, I'm researching, and I quickli found I should regear for the bigger tires, and I don't have lockers, so i thought it would be inteligent to regear AND get lockers at the same time. Would it be more cost efficient considering labor (since it's all IN the diffs)? Also do I need to regear ASAP? It's my daily, so I don't want to be miserable... Finally, not being a rubicon, I checked my axles and its a front D30 and rear D40. Is upgrading to say D44 a priority as well? I don't have the money to upgrade rn, but as I save up for the lift and tires, what upgrades can I do sequentially? and what consequences might that have? Thank you and sorry for the long coment, I'm just very bummed, I thought I could save up 5 or 6,000$ and do it all at once, but all those things will add up a lot more than that.....

Yes, I set my pinion angle in the rear to match the output of the transmission and the front angle is set on whatever it took to get my caster to -5.5

I like the sound of your exhaust, I saw that video install. It appears its rusting bad or is that a bad camera angle. Great choice for drive shafts they are on my upgrade list!!!

None of the new stuff has rusted yet but the stock section has a fair bit of surface rust on it. I do highly recommend the Tom Woods shop!

If I get a 2.5 in lift with either 33s or 35s. Does anyone recommend this or any other things I should be aware of? I don't plan on going off roading

Awesome! Didn't realize you did this video. I have a good amount of leakage in my front driveshaft seal. I bought the replacement seal, but didn't think to ask if there is a different sized seal I need, or if they are universal, regardless of lift or gear size. Can you answer that one for me? I'm gonna do the job next week. Thanks!

Nice Build, did you need to reset the pinion preload on the Rear D44 when installing the new flange?!

Autoedit...is a truss welded on or C gusset welded onto the front axle necessary to run 37's either for on the road or for 4x4 wheeling?

I would say any strength you can add to the axle housing is a good idea but be carefull... I've heard of people warping axle housings by welding improperly. We will find out together how strong the stock housings are since I plan on using this thing just like it is for a while.

Would this be the reason my lifted jku in 4x4 makes a clicking noise? Made a turm in the snow and after that it starts making a clicking noise. Its a rubicon 2014 with only 32k on it and sitting on 315/75/17 and im pretty sure its a 3 inch lift
