DETAILED WIRING INSTRUCTIONS HERE IN DESCRIPTION
Today I am using a linear actuator as a mechanism to automatically close and open a chicken coop door. This is a very easy DIY automatic chicken coop door. I've done this previous (see link below) but I am now working off a simpler design (see link below). This design uses a DC timer / controller switch, linear actuator, 12v 5a power supply and a electromagnetic relay. Links to purchase all items below.
FULL WIRING INSTRUCTIONS AT END OF THIS DESCRIPTION
Video of my previous build: • EASY AUTOMATIC CHICKEN...
Apparently the original wiring diagram I follow is now offline (see below).
alwysgn was kind enough to suggest this alternative: www.progressiveautomations.co...
Thanks you, alwysgn!
OLD TUTORIAL --- LINK DEAD ---Wiring directions: www.actuatorzone.com/blog/hel...
PARTS LIST:
8" Stroke Linear Actuator: amzn.to/2Ote5Xn
DC Timer / Controller: amzn.to/34qopVz
Electromagnetic Relay: amzn.to/34sFU7M
Power Supply: amzn.to/2ON4TMd
FULL WIRING INSTRUCTIONS
(original from the now DEAD link)
First we need to do some wiring with the relay, which will create a half bridge. When the relay is in its default position it is deactivated and to activate it you need to apply 12V of power to Pin 8 on the relay. In this case we are going to set the default position of our linear actuator to be fully retracted, that way once we activate the relay the actuator will activate as well, causing it to extend. In order for that to happen we first need to wire our actuator to the relay. First connect Pin 1 to Pin 4, Pin 4 to the 12V power source, Pin 2 to Pin 3, Pin 3 to Pin 7 and Pin 7 to GND. After that you can connect the actuator wires to Pins 5 and 6. If the actuator starts to extend then just flip the connections on Pins 5 and 6 to make sure the default position is retracted.

Now it’s time for the main portion, connecting the digital timer. When you wire the timer to a 12V power source its ON times (we will go over these later) will coincide with the relay activating. Some soldering is required here for connecting the timer to the relay. If you turn the timer over you will see two wiring ports, Switch and Power. The wires will need to be soldered to the timer and arranged like this; 12V and GND connect to the Power side while 12V and Pin 8 connect to the Switch side.

Once all the components are wired and ready to go we can test the actuator to make sure everything works. Press the MANUAL button on the digital timer to activate it, the orange light should turn on and the actuator should start to extend. As stated earlier our timer allows 17 different times to be set for the actuator to activate, we’ll be going over how to program and set a time now. First we need to program the current day and time. Notice the D+, H+ and M+ buttons under the screen, these are to edit the Day, Hour and Month respectively. Just hold down the Clock button in the middle of the bottom row of buttons and press each + button until you are satisfied with the time.

To program and set a time for the actuator to extend first press the P button under the screen. On the screen in the bottom left there should be a small number with ON or OFF below it. Pressing the P button a second time will start to list through options 1 ON, 1 OFF, 2 ON, 2 OFF and so on up to 17. These ON, OFF numbers represent the program number with ON activating the relay and OFF deactivating it. After picking a number, let’s say 1 ON, then use the + buttons to set a time for that number. Once that time is reached the actuator will extend. If you make a mistake and need to start over just press the C/R button on the bottom right. Once finished with programming times just press the Clock button to go back to the current time.

I'd suggest putting the whole works inside the coup so they're protected from the weather. And you could mount the actuator horizontally, to slide the door sideways, so you could make the door height as large as needed.

I can't thank you enough for taking the time and effort to post your KZfaq video on how to use a linear actuator to automate the open/close of a chicken coop door. I am a new to owning chickens and was able to find a great used chicken coop that has a ramp underneath with a manual pully to open/close the ramp. (This is their only door in and out of the coop and the ramp is quite heavy!) I've been searching and searching and searching for ways to automate opening and closing the ramp as we like to go away on weekends and I don't want to always bother a neighbor to lock the chickens up at night and let them out in the morning. I am happy to report that I used your concept with the linear actuator to push the ramp closed at night and to lower it in the morning. I mounted the linear actuator inside a wooden cockatiel nesting box that sits under their ramp. I have not previously done electrical work, but thanks to your detailed information on what to buy and wiring instructions, my automated ramp works perfectly! You're THE BEST! Thank you!

I just finished my automatic door opener install yesterday. I used a 14" stroke actuator mounted inside on the bottom of the ridge plate (in this case a 2 x 4 that the top of a rafter is nailed to) with a cable running threw a Eye hole screw and down to the door. In my case I had to put boards at the bottom of the door way because the chickens where throwing the straw out the door. So, even with a 14" stroke the opening is only about 11". My door is a wood that has a little bow to it and gets a little stuck when opened. I'm gonna add some weight to the door and that should fix the sticking issue and make it harder for any unwanted critter from lifting the door. The actuator is rated for 250 lbs so adding 10-20 lbs isn't gonna be a problem. I'm gonna build one or maybe 2 more coops and next time I'm gonna use an 18" stroke. My next build will have the bottom of the door way 6" above the floor and I can have the door go past the bottom of the door way 4" - 6" along with a heavier door for extra security. Thank you for vid. It really helped me out..

I have all the components and ran across a disconnect between the diagram pin numbers and the relay. Do I follow the diagram top to bottom or the numbers on the diagram to the numbers on the relay? On the diagram the pins are numbers 1 thru 8 left to right and top to bottom. The relay pin numbers left to right and top to bottom are 4,3,2,1 then below the relay is 8,7,6,5. I realize this is an old thread but very very appreciative of the simplification of the timers and relay needed. thanks... After looking at the amazon ad details the numbering sequence in the description matches your digrahm...so I think it may be a manufacturing misprint error on the relya itself.

You don't need 12v 5a from solar... you just need a very low power solar panel, a lawn mower battery, and an charge controller. Your actuator will run off the battery and then it will charge all day long at low power and close the door in the evening, rinse and repeat.

Thanks for this video. So if I understand correctly, the actuator simply extends when given power, and will stay extended when under power. When under opposite polarity, it retracts, even when continuing to receive opposite power. Thus, we needn't worry about how long to power the actuator to get the right stroke. Have I got that right? We're simply always giving it +/- or -/+?
@raymondboyd7964
@raymondboyd7964 8 ай бұрын
No. It goes one direction when energized, and the other direction when power is cut. The power has to stay on to keep the actuator from reversing the stroke.

@punkyroo

If it is working via the manual button, then it is wired correctly, because the manual function just bypasses the timed switch in the DC timer. It sounds like you might not have the timer setup properly. Make sure you switch the mode back to AUTO or else the programmed OFF/ON will be ignored.

Would this work with a timed outlet switch providing power to the AC power supply? Would that then eliminate the need for the timer and the relay?
@punkyroo
@punkyroo 3 жыл бұрын
It would not. Because the linear actuator works by flipping DC current polarity, not a simple off / on of the current. So when the electrons flow one way, the actuator extends, flow in the opposite direction and the actuator retracts. (The flipping of current is what the relay is doing, and the DC timer is controlling WHEN it flips) Cutting power off would simply do nothing.

So I just found the original wiring instructions for the relay. It literally tells you which pin to wire to what so I hope it helps: First we need to do some wiring with the relay, which will create a half bridge.

Absolutely! It's what I hopefully will do. Just setup a solar battery setup with an output of 12v and necessary amps as the power source. You may also want to consider my older two-timer build, since that technically is more energy efficient because the second timer cuts all power off to the linear actuator to avoid the slow trickle. See the video description for a link to the older video.

Thank you for this informative video. I have a question for you if you don't mind. As I understand this, when it is in the "off" position, power is still being applied to the linear actuator even after it is fully contracted. Or in the case when the switch is in the "on" position, power is still being applied to the linear actuator even after it is fully extended. Is there any concerns with burning up the actuator with power being still applied to it once it reaches its fully extended or contracted position? Thanks for you help in advance!
@punkyroo

No concern. Linear actuators are designed to function in either state for extended periods of time. Once fully extended, the motor no longer runs. Now the linear actuator is still being powered while the door is closed (and the actuator is fully extended), but since no force is being applied, only negligible energy is used If you have any concerns about this, check out my older two-timer design that is linked in the video description. This uses a second timer to reopen the door so the linear actuator can be completely unpowered during its fully extended / door closed state. Thanks for watching! :)

The same thing happened to me. On his wiring diagram the relay terminal #4 must go directly to your power source (or battery) so that it is always providing power. Your terminal #8 on the relay is your signal wire for 12 VDC+ so this will go to your controller of choice providing the power for your activation signal to extend/retract. Hope this helps!

My pleasure! You will still need the relay to change polarity when the switch is thrown. I'm not familiar with a "smart plug" specifically.. but it sounds like a fancy switch, so it can probably be made to work. :)

Cool build! I'd be interested to know if you've had any issue so far with the relay. As I understand it, this system (vs the one using 2 timers) keeps the relay energized for half the day. I'm definitely not an electrical expert, but I guess the downside is that the relay might die over time if it is constantly in use (compared to only a few minutes per day). Maybe these relays are built to withstand that use, but I'd like to hear your experience since the installation? Cheers

HAVING TROUBLING WIRING? READ THIS ENTIRE COMMENT FOR DETAILS: Apparently the original wiring diagram I follow is now dead. alwysgn was kind enough to suggest this alternative: www.progressiveautomations.com/blogs/stories/adding-linear-actuators-chicken-coops-snow-blower-chutes Thanks you, alwysgn! STILL CONFUSED? I found the original wiring instructions I followed. I literally tells which pin is wired to what for the relay. Check it out: First we need to do some wiring with the relay, which will create a half bridge.

We had a similar system (linear actuator) installed at my friend's family's big chicken coop 3-4 years ago. We designed the door to slide horizontally as opposed to this one which is vertical and one morning they found a dead chicken caused by the door. There could be ways to add a safety device that stops the mechanism when it feels too much resistance but we thought it was not necessary (at first). I don't know if the vertical vs horizontal makes any difference. My guess is that two stubborn chickens wanted to enter at the same time and got stuck and none would let the other one go. The mechanism goes so slowly, it's hard to envision how it could kill an animal tho. Just wanted to let you know it can happen!

Your wiring instructions are very hard to understand. Connect pin 1 to… connect pin 8 to..? Which is the relay? Which is the timer? Which is the actuator?

Wouldn't that be a chicken crusher if they get under the door?

It closes very slowly, they have more than enough time to get out of the way. :) I've done this for years, with hundreds of chickens. Not a single one crushed. :)

If a chicken gets crushed by these slower than molasses linear actuators then it wasn't an accident, it was either fowl play (pun intended) or It was it's own grim reaper.
