On the Land Rover Discovery Series II, over a period of time, the clutches wear and that material builds up into the filter and into the fluid itself.
That all reduces the efficiency of the transmission.
It creates more heat, and heat is the worst enemy for an automatic transmission.
Watch Doug, our Land Rover Master Technician, perform the transmission service using our Kit # TRANSM600SKB on a 1999 Discovery Series II.
In this video, Doug will show you how to access and replace the transmission filter and gasket, and refill with new transmission fluid, new filter and o-rings and gaskets, which is included in our service kit.
This service also is valid for the Discovery I, Range Rover 4.0 or 4.6 P38, with 4-speed ZF transmission; and should be performed every 30,000 miles.

You should always take the fill plug out first so if you can't get it out you don't end up with a dry transmission

Extremely helpful video! Don't think that I could have done this without it. A few tips from someone who did this repair without a lift: I used 4 jack stands set up pretty high (8 notches up). The forward stand was just behind the front door opening, in order to give enough room for me in front of it. I had to loosen the screw that is used for the transmission mount below the back of the pan (5/8" socket), in order to get the pan in and out easily. The drain plug on my P38 was 5mm, not 6mm. I used anti-seize compound on the bolts after cleaning them. Only 1 was stuck and rusty (I sprayed them all multiple times over a period of time), but it did come out with a little extra effort. I used a face shield and had sleeve protection and gloves when crawling under the car when it was running because of the hot catalytic converter. Overall, it took much longer than I had thought it would and was very frustrating at times because I didn't have a lift, but it worked!

Another incredible video! One question, why not include new bolts in the kit if they are so susceptible to corrosion?
@atlanticbritishrp
@atlanticbritishrp 5 жыл бұрын
it's really more dependent on where you live... seaside salt air or winter region where they salt roads, metal corrodes... southern areas not nearly as much of a problem. i.e. if you don't need new bolts and hardware, why be forced to buy them?

I'm curious. I did my trans yesterday. I let it drain all the way out. Didn't change the filter... anyways, I put 2 quarts into it. Drove it around the block and went through all gears. Came back and leveled it out, but only took half a quart maybe. So I only put 2½qts into it total Does that sound right? Or is it possible my filter is messing with the flow inside. I see everyone talking about 5-7qts. So was surprised when it only took under 3.

When you're draining the oil in the transmission do you have to train it while it's hot or more. When adding oil to the transmission do you have to wait for the transmission to become hot to have the proper level

I help my discos transmission last a bit longer by putting in in neutral, pulling the hand brake, then putting it in park, it prevents your truck slamming into the parking gear when you park and the truck rolls forward until the gear catches

The install vid shows the Liqui Moly brand oil but we have since changed it. The kit, found here: www.roverparts.com/Parts/TRANSM600SKB, now includes 7 quarts of Pennzoil Dexron III / Mercron III ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid. The Pennzoil version is high quality and a better value price-wise.

Hi Doug. Very good video. You couldn’t have explained this oil change any earlier. I carried out the job on my 2003 discovery 2. All went well. I followed your advise and it’s a job well done. Only question I have is after I took it fir a drive I immediately notice much cleaner gear change. But on stopping at my drive , when I put it into reverse I can hear a mild clunk, this noise is only made when putting it into reverse. Every other gear no noise. Any thoughts anyone.?

ok so you dropped the pan and changed the filter and gasket so why did you have to go through all the hoopla with starting the Rover and running through all the gears and checking the new added fluid level when you could just put in the same amount you took out. I mean, you stopped the rover... it's on a lift... just put the same amount back in that you drained. You can use the fill plug or just put it in through the dipstick in the engine compartment. But it is a well explained video .. Does anybody from atlanticbritish ever respond to questions and comments?
@atlanticbritishrp
@atlanticbritishrp 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Keneo, the reason why you go through all these steps is to save yourself from a costly repair by over or under filling your transmission. Additionally, the reason why you start the Rover and add more while it is running along with going through all the gears is to circulate the new transmission oil through the system and then add more as necessary to get it to the correct level for operation.

Ok I tried to tackle this job yesterday. It was a nightmare to say the least. Keep in mind I have a 97 Disco 1. I couldn't get the exhaust loose to have room to move the crossmember to get the pan off. Upon much deliberation I decided to cut my crossmember in 2 separate places. I used my brand spanking new Milwaukee Hackzall!! Worked great!! I plan on making a custom crossmember/skidplate and bolt it up so it will be easy to take off next time. Well anyway after I dropped the pan and tried to take the torx bolts out of the filter the 2 bolts on the side stripped out on me. They were so tight they bent 2 of my torx bit drivers. So then I was about to give up but nooooooo!!! I get a bright idea to take my air tool with my little grinding bit and make a cut in each head of the bolt to fit a big screw driver in. Screw driver didn't work so I got my Milwaukee driver drill and broke one loose and got it out. The other one was a fail when I mangled the top of the bolt head. So I took screw driver and tapped the side of the head with my hammer and it came loose. So i'm like now what.. Where am I going to find these bolts? So I get online and email Atlantic British asking for help. I was asking somebody to look around the shop for some spare bolts to send me..lol.. But then an hour later I thought i'll just run down to ACE hardware and see if I can find them. I searched for a while but I found the perfect 10mm bolt to use. 69 cents each. I have the filter installed and just waiting for some time to put the pan back on. I also noticed that there is no fill plug on a Disco 1. I didn't know that till yesterday. I hope after all this is over and I take this baby out on the road the transmission doesn't go out on me. I've already drained and filled once. Maybe ill do it again in a week after I get everything together. Also.. Another question.. Do you know if the 94-99 Rovers had magnets in the transmission pan? Mine didn't but I wasn't sure...

Well when I did this job two weeks ago it only drained a bowl of oil so definitely not gonna add that to it because it needs more. He’s shaking you how check and make sure how to check the oil level. If I were to add the same amount of new oil to my car it would had the same issue because it needed more
