@bixbybixby

Never seen this before. After trying it, it works pretty darn good. It's entire purpose is for IT to hold the tension in the rope so YOU don't have to. Most people know they lose some tension when 'pinching' the line and then trying to tie it off. You CAN also avoid the pinching thing by tying a regular Trucker's hitch then simply going back down and around the anchor with a Round Turn and Two Half-Hitches. The round turn holds all the tension and leaves your two hands free. But your little 'trick' is pretty good and don't know why I've never seen it before. (btw I would still secure it with half-hitches just to be on the safe side).

I have used this not for 50 years and never once had it fail. Here's a tip, when you put the tag end through the loop, pinch with you thumb and index finger to hold it while you make the first knot you showed. It is amazing the amount of strength you can hold with just your thumb and index finger. Love your jig, looks like it would work great. Also love your going around the loop twice and how easy it releases when you want it to. Great video, should help a lot of people.

My first instinct was, what a great idea! Then I tried it a few times with a rope.... Remember that loads will shift in a truck so your rope may often go slack for a few hours after the truck hits a bump, and the guy in the cab won't necessarily notice. If you let tension off this knot, it can come undone completely! So, for critical application it needs a slipped overhand loop at the end so it can't come undone when tension is off. As shown, this knot would be great for a tarp or a tent where tension will be consistent and where the implications of a disconnect are innocent enough. And you've got a great solution to my frustration about reaching up a tree to tighten the knot in an awkward position, only to lose tension as I complete the knot. But for a trucker's hitch, this one needs a failsafe backup knot so that your load doesn't become a missile that could hit oncoming traffic.

When I was 17 I used to load and tie down stacks and stacks of 100 and 150 lb bags of drilling mud on the backs of flatbed trailers after school and on Saturdays. It was 1977 and there were no ratchet straps yet. We used rope only with these knots to tie down 70 mph truckloads. We weren't smart enough to figure out that 2nd pass through the loop. We made a 2nd loop altogether. By passing the rope through this 2nd loop and pulling just like the first one, it acted like a tensioner. Pull one then pull the other and it took up the slack. I always thought that was genius.

I like how the extra loop holds the tension while tightening, instead of having to pinch, have not seen that one, so for that reason I'm liking, subscribing and commenting. However, for an actual trucking situation, I think it needs to be followed up with the traditional slip knot at the end, to keep the 'blackwall hitch' from coming loose under road vibration.

This is so awesome! Also instead of an Alpine Butterfly for the top loop you could use a slip loop I think it's called but it's tied the exact same way as a marline spike hitch but you pull the loop in the direction opposite of how you would pull it when tying it to use for a marline spike. So you'll need to tie it flipped to use the slip loop for a truckers hitch. So when the truckers hitch is untied it all comes out. But I guess if the line is always used for a truckers hitch keeping a fixed loop could be desired.

Your upper loop knot is not a quick release loop therefore I will not use that aspect of this system. I find it critical to NOT have difficult to remove knots in my ropes. However the additional pass of the working end through the loop is a very good idea and will use from time to time. I use single a pass through through the loop because it quicker to undo, but sometimes in difficult to access situations your additional pass will be very helpful. And as others have stated always use a back up hitch for security. I lost part of my load on a busy freeway once years ago and had to tell my boss that several hundred dollars of his material was gone. The next morning he met me on the construction jobsite with 100' feet of rope coiled up, pushed it into my hand, looked me dead in the eye and said, "Rope is cheap, peoples lives are not!" That profoundly impacted and humbled me. I went home at the end of the day and tied knots at the company truck and trailer for 2 hours on my own time and learned how to tie loads securely. Practiced it every day driving with loads and became very good over time. Thank you for teaching others how to safely secure loads!!

I used a knot of this style for many years as a local truck driver. You DIDN’T show how you made the beginning loop. You might think duh everyone knows that, but I made mine different AND better. Start with a slip knot loop and then go about it as you did. That way when you undo the “locking” knot just pull your rope back through the knot AND just give you slip knot loop a yank and it’s GONE. No hassle of untying the loop knot. ALSO you can use this knot on the same rope over and over, this way and then back. You can actually break your tie down point or potentially the rope. When I tied hazmat cylinders to the side of the trailer they became part of the wall.

Just secured my Marquee using this method. I've known the Truckers hitch for a good ten years, always struggled with the last minute tensioning. Especially with slippery paracaord and Plastic ropes. This is a game changer. We had mad winds today which broke one of the Marquees poles (that might have been me a bit too...it was chaotic). I just went all around the marquee with paracord guylines and large stakes and managed to get the tension so tight I could play a note on the guys. Awesome method. This would be useful also if you had to operate one handed...as I may have to do so in the foreseeable future or as you may have to in any emergency. Could even be useful as a Tourniquet tying option.

I've tested this a bunch. I find it's a very unstable hitch. All I have to do is bump it the right way and it releases. This might be excellent for quickly cinching up something while you lash/tie it better, but I personally would never use it to tie something down. The secret to the trucker's hitch I use starts the same way as yours, no matter what the loop; bowline, figure eight, etc., it doesn't matter . Come through from underneath, then throw a slipped sheet bend around the loop. Don't try to tie something around the line you are putting through the loop. You can't hold it. When putting the sheet bend around the loop, it's easy to pinch as much tension as you can put on the line and secure the bend without losing any tension. The hitch/bend is secure, won't come open. If you're worried about it coming loose, drop the free end of your line through the slipped sheet bend's loop and close it up just a little. Don't get it tight, doesn't need to be. It's just to secure the bend and the loop. See the crappy video on my channel, "Throwing the loop on a sheet bend". Thank you for your content!

Yes it will actually undo itself. And that like a crime in knot tying. The integrity of knots are one of those things that we all start off assuming is trivial boyscout stuff but many many life's over several centuries have been lost due to nothing more than a poor knot. And I've tested this idea out and it does indeed fail and doesn't work in any way. I already wrote a long comment detailing why. Nice idea though. Just falls shirt I'm afraid and I would honestly not promote it.

@@lylechipperson3407 Yeh ive used it there too but you csnt put allot of tension with it from what i discovered. The biggest problem is that pinching a truckers hitch even with a crap load of tension will hold it for you to tie the half hitch. So its just unnecessary. Still very innovative. Can't say I've invented any knots myself

You still tie off as normal, this just holds the tension while you tie off..

I learned that selling xmas trees when I was a teenager. Had to tie them on top of cars with bailers twine. Great knot
