I love cars and I just graduated from university with an automotive engineering degree. Since I graduated, I began taking manual lessons but unfortunately I suffer from very bad anxiety and after a bad learning experience about 5 years back, I have decided to go the Auto route. At first I felt ashamed and received unkind words from my friends because they know I am a car guy. Ultimately, I will be driving the vehicle and if I can drive without anxiety then that is safer. LEARN HOWEVER YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE!

@@GG-rk1bu Life is TOO SHORT. We can't be waiting forever to pluck up the courage and confidence to learn and pass on a manual car. If your heart is saying Auto, then place the gear lever in 'drive' and learn with a smile on your face. And remember, passing in Auto is not an excuse, it is a CHOICE! 14 years ago, I spent many hours trying to learn in a manual.. Didn’t enjoy it at all, so didn’t keep it up. Finally last year in June, I decided to get lessons again, but in an automatic, and I preferred it. Took my test in October, passed first time! Chuffed to bits 😂 I’ll finally be getting my first car at the end of this week but it’s been 6 months since last drove 😳 feeling a bit anxious but I’m sure it’ll be ok. But my advice to anyone is, if you really are struggling in a manual, try an automatic, don’t worry if people think you’re copping out. If you can get a license and spend some time driving around and building your confidence, there’s no reason why you can’t take your manual test at a later date should you want to!

@@jaythrash8804 Yh I mean tbf I did the same thing you said when I first learnt how to drive and did automatic for a couple lessons (unintentionally though) and picked up things quite quickly. But then I tried transitioning into a manual and found it very difficult to adapt because I felt too used to an auto so I’d keep forgetting to change gear or using the clutch whenever I’m braking etc. Felt like I should’ve just started from a manual straight away and I would’ve not kept making those mistakes.

I like this video. Thank you for the comparison. I’ve done 7-8 lessons on manual but I want to pass on automatic. 1. I hate the clutch/biting point stuff. It’s too much hassle worrying about that. Turning into roads while holding the clutch down and slowly bringing it back up really just annoys me. It put me off driving because of how much focus I have to give it and it’s annoying. I don’t see the “boring” aspect of just driving in an auto car. I find it smooth. I can drive a manual car so I have the knowledge and ability to switch gears and do it but I just don’t like it. I don’t see myself driving manuals in the future and as they say automatic is the future. 2. I just want my license quick tbh. I’m not fussed about doing more lessons on manual and taking more time to get it when I can just do 5-10 lessons of auto and get the license.

@@nabzThegooner bro it’s amazing. I passed my driving test this September on auto and it was the best choice ever. Saved me a whole lot of time and hassle. Got my car 2 weeks ago (semi auto) so I can actually manually switch gears if I want to and that’s without a clutch so this whole “you can’t enjoy an auto” is all BS. We can literally have best of both worlds if we are that interested in switching gears constantly and that’s without a clutch. My advice to you is do automatic and you won’t regret it. Great video 👍. Ford's have nice manual gearboxes. As far as autos go, it very much depends on the car imo and the type of auto box. The older 3&4 speed autos were heavy on fuel and often slow. Modern 8 speed (even 10 speed) automatics are in some cases faster and more economical than manuals though definitely pricey. Most people don't shift as well as you so I think the manual/auto fuel economy gap in modern cars for many drivers is small. Definitely worth passing in a manual if you can to give you options.

I'm torn between whether to learn and take my test in an automatic or manual; really hard decision. The *only* reason I'd go for manual, is in case of an emergency, where there may only be a manual car around, and also with the availability of automatics not being guaranteed when you holiday abroad in any country (unless this is different now). I really just need to pass it now, as I had put it off for years, since failing my first test!

Thanks for this! I’ve been learning to drive on and off for 5 years! I only took it seriously in 2019 as I wasn’t ready the previous years. Since then I have failed on a manual twice. My first test I wasn’t ready and felt pressured to take one by my instructor. Second test was just down to nerve and having a bad examiner. My 3rd test is coming up very soon I feel confident about this one and Definitely having a new instructor has helped however if I do fail my 3rd test I will probably try learning in an automatic just because I do struggle with the gear changes and clutch control at times and I would like to see if the issue is that or if I need to be more confident with my driving

Where I'm from driving a manual is still pretty common for people (almost all of our public transpo vehicles are stickshift). I learned on a manual and actually prefer it over an auto simply because I actually enjoy it. Keeps me more involved with the vehicle and makes me more aware of the car's capabilities and limits, which is why I enjoy it. Another thing I noticed though - which is just my personal experience - when I switched to an auto for a few years, I found that my reflexes and "driving sense" as I like to call it, diminished a little bit. For some reason, I'm more focused as a driver when I'm using a manual. With the auto, I tend to get easily distracted. I know some people won't agree (I know some of my friends who drive autos hate it when I say this), but my time driving automatics actually diminished my skills and focus on the road. No hate on automatics though, I get why most people love them. They're just not for me.

Well, I think it all depends on which car you intend to buy. If you're into an automatic car, then ignore the manual cars. If you just want to consider the possibility of having to drive someone's manual car in an emergency, I think it's a slim chance. But logically speaking, if you need to stop a lot in a city that has speed bumps, etc and you'll have to stop every couple of meters, then you definitely should opt for an automatic car.

Informative video... unfortunately the fuel consumption myth is false. If you drive an older auto maybe but the reason all major car manufacturers are moving to auto as standard is the new 7,8 and 9 forward gear boxes are far more efficient. Ofcourse a driver with a heavy foot would not see the difference. A lot of autos have semi auto manual selection and you are able to engine brake just as effectively. Also a lot of auto boxes adjust to your driving style if you have been driving aggressively it will shift faster and less sluggish.

Hey Tina! that made me actually chuckle.. co-ordination skills of a marble LOL! I could certainly do more videos with auto cars if youd like! but best thing I'd suggest for your issue is slow down more before a corner (its not a race you're learning and not in a race or late for anything), slow down and start your corner routine/procedure earlier (slowing down earlier will give you more time to spot your turn in point and steer enough to keep you close to the kerb) and lastly try and follow the kerb with your steering (following the kerb means steering enough to keep close to it not drift too wide) Hope this helps!! :)

I hear you. Not all instructors are excellent. But think whether it was the gears you had trouble with or driving on the road? Might be worth finding a REALLY good instructor that can make what you struggle with make sense 😊

@@DrivingSchoolTV Yup yup. "Traction button off" :) I used to be scared of central london. Now after 3 years driving everyday in central. My brain has become the map and you start to remember what speed, what gear, when to brake. Sometimes my brains on auto pilot..... One final thing a manual merc sprinter luton van is actually very nippy. :)

Manual Cars are becoming like chequebooks, soon to be confined to history. Also Automatics using more fuel will become less relevant over time with more and more electric vehicles.
