how to achieve direct drive. Why does the freewheel doesnt rotate when the input shaft rotates. Splines allow the rotation as well as sliding movement which are used in gearbox and all

Freewheel allows output shaft to spin faster than input shaft, but not vise versa. So when OD is engaged, it freewheels a bit to allow the higher output shaft speed. When disengaged (sun gear unlocked) the input shaft speed will increases until it matches the output shaft speed then it catches and rotates together - direct drive.

To avoide confusion, Locking and unlocking mechanism is not shown in this figure. There will be slot and stopper mechanism for this. In general Automobile books it is shown.

usually a cone clutch operated by an electric-huydraulic pump. Perhaps a locking mechanism too, which would make it similar to the synchronizer of the main transmission.
