---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This 'basic video' shows on a mock-up one of several 'traditional ways' to give shape on front and rear part of transmission tunnel when installing 'automotive non-heat molded carpets'. Most of old car trimmers know how to do it.
This common way consists in doing a 'T shape cut'. One long cut from left lowest bottom point all around the rounded section until touching the other right bottom point. A smaller perpendicular 'cut' should be done from upper edge to center of transversal line/cut.
For this 'basic demonstration' I am using 'non-backed automotive carpet'. This process would help us understand how to cut and give shape to carpet material around front and rear bulky part of transmisison tunnel.
The 'T' shape 'cuts' are mostly used on automobiles front and rear floor sections.
On trucks it should be done just on front section.
At the beginning of the video I am showing two samples on 'automotive carpet'. There are small differences when working on this kind of material. As we can see, the 'cut edges' would be sewn on its reverse side.
It is important to mention these 'must do cuts' in different ways are commonly used on ' automotive trim carpets' for automobiles. These carpets never would be heated to give them shape. Besides, we should be careful while cutting the edges. They easily fray.
As a particular opinion, I'd rather go for 'custom molded carpets' which are more resistant, all of its forms go in place, and easier to install.
I hope this information is useful for you!

Hi, i am planning on covering a floor in leather or suede, this looks like the way to approach it, in your experience can leather be stretched and /or trim fit like this and mated to a molded underpad?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын
Michael Tinnin I have not grasped the whole idea. But, I only would say the leather material could be just placed over the molded underpad, and trimmed off where it is necessary. It should not be stretched. Perhaps, the best in case of using leather would be to do the job in sections. Pieces perfectly fitted to the contour of the car floor. The edge of pieces could be binded and sewn individually then attached to the floor giving the desired shape.

You know, it is well-deserved. The greatest thing we can do in this world is passing on and sharing our experiences and knowledge. One day, some young man/woman will need to work on a project and will create it correctly without shortcuts with precision. People will ask how they did it...and they will say that they learned it from you. Knowledge is a power that very few a willing to share. To pass it on with such simplicity and clarity is just as powerful! I love your humility! Cheers!

Thanks for taking the time to educate us on techniques that a lot of people can pick up and learn that would take a lot of trial and error to figure out on your own. People can be selfish with their knowledge but you give freely. Not often a common thing in our modern society. If I could add a little tip for the other newbies out there - instead of using a grease pencil try using a piece of chalk. If you make a mistake its easily removed without any stains. Works for layout in upholstery and other tailoring. You can sharpen a standard piece of chalk to a chisel point with a piece of sandpaper for precision marking.

Dear Deniz, The cutting techniques on a real car are similar. If you want to sew the cut edges together do not forget to give the sewing allowance on the wrong side of carpet. In this video I only show the cuts but not the sewing process. These basic videos are the basis to understand a real demonstration I will do on a real car floor. Before the real demonstration I have to upload another basic video that shows two paralell cuts done on front part. it is mostly used on trucks that have the transmission tunnel not so protruded. If you just want to lay the carpet with its cuts over the floor it also works out. The only thing I would recommend is to get a good carpet that does not fray the wool edges.

@Cechaflo

I would recommend the use of 'trunk carpet' if you are not going to sew the cut edges. It means you could make the cuts and lay them over the car floor. Do not forget the underlay that helps to shape the carpet, insulation and above all it softens the feet treads. The cut edges of this carpet does not fray. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arp4bNWE1ra7cac.html If you are going to use the automotive trim carpet I would recommend sew it down to avoid the fraying of the cut edges. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNJ5p8irr72tYXU.html More related information:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLpnnMmim7LPYo0.html

Incredible work. However this looks to be for older cars with the round transmission tunnels. Anything for the 90's GM trucks with the square tunnel? Going to go have a piece of carpet cut for my crew cab and do it myself because the pre molded carpet is crazy expensive and not molded very well. The only thing I am afraid to do myself in the entire truck are the door panels and sun visors.

Thanks for the beautiful tutorial, this is what I was looking for to do up my cat. One question i have after you have cut the carpet, what do you do to put them together - glue the pieces or sew them together. And either way that area will have double layer, do you thin down the carpet in that area. Thanks again for a nice tutorial.

At he beginning of the video you can see the cut edges were sewn down (do not forget include allowance) The edges of carpet material can be sewn together easily. It looks like it is very hard but it is not...they are very soft, believe me! These basics can be applied on a real car carpet floor. Thanks so much for watching the videos!

What adhesive do you use? Brush on or spray adhesive? Do you have a video on installing a carpet on a wheel well?

Y como se cocen las uniones? O van pegadas con cemento de contacto? Y a la alfombra de algodón como va adherido? Solo se cementa en los bordes o todo...? Tengo que hacer un trabajo similar en la semana
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 4 жыл бұрын

I assume the bottom layer (cardboard?) is just a template of the tunnel to help you construct it, is that right? Is the intention then to take this piece and glue it into the car? Have you have ever seen or used a system where the carpet uses snaps to clip the carpet into place instead? Thanks for the video!

This is just a mock-up made out of cardboard for educational purpose. It gives us an idea how a car floor carpet is shaped and cut. Snaps are useful to keep the carpet in place. Some tar strips or other adhesives are useful too. www.amazon.com/Double-Sided-Carpet-Sticky-Tape/dp/B07DW4SR5M?language=en_US
