Autonomia: Intellijel Metropolis in Ableton Live

So after dipping toes into building one ( • Building a Metropolis ... ), I decided to try to go all the way and build a full-on clone of the Intellijel Metropolis (intellijel.com/downloads/manu...) as a Max for Live device!
Aside a couple of creative liberties and adaptations for the M4L/MIDI environment, this has all the features of the original hardware. It even has some chunky sliders that I think work a bit like the real ones!

Amazing! Metropolix is my favourite modular sequencer, so would love to see the accumulator feature added to this!

Hi, I just noticed that D is missing in the root note options... easy enough to work around with Ableton scale & transpose though :)

amazing work! thanks for sharing this for free. i havent gotten into modular and the motropolis was always the once device that tempted to get into it. Thanks to this i can test out the workflow if its for me or not!

@@p__meyer probably not the best place to ask, but i seem to be running into an issue when running multiple instances of Autonomia. the 2nd instance either causes the 1st instances state to be cleared or the 2nd instance state is going through the 1st.

thanks for letting me know! I think this is now fixed - the issue was that the buffers inside of the device needed to be uniquely named for each instance of the device. You can find the updated version here: maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=8887. Please let me know if you still are having the issue with this version

@@p__meyer Thanks i just tried 0.5 version with ableton 11.3, max 8.5.4 and now it doesnt work at all unfortunately. the sequencer doesnt seem to be running

After your last video I went the other way. I now have several abstractions wich represent the different parts of the Metropolix (pulse count, gate length, value and probability), so that I have more flexibility. For example the Value block can act as pitch, octave selector and velocity. The PulseCount block can have a variable number of stages, which gets propagated to a all connected blocks.

that's so coooooool! yes, i've been finding it very interesting to explore how integrated designs compare to modular ones. usually i'm more on the modular side, but it was interesting to do something completely integrated this time.

Absolutely outstanding effort to recreate Metropolis. I own the hardware and hate having to route and convert the signal from the module back into the computer for VST use. Thank you so much. One feature that I am sure not just myself, but many others would appreciate is a random button that with one click randomises the pitch, pulse count, gate mode, skip/slide, ratchet data or individual buttons for each feature. Personally I would love to see the latter.

Thank you! Yes, randomize is a cool feature. It would be interesting to think through a general design for such a thing that lets you select which parameters are randomized, and which aren't...or even define an amount of randomization (i.e. an extent to which the param values deviate from the current state of the device). This last thing I could imagine being really useful for creating sequence variations

@@p__meyer Absolutely. To be able to control the amount of random applied is very powerful for keeping things grooving and interesting to the ear.

@@p__meyer speaking of sequence variations, what i really find useful in sequencers is the ability to storage presets, that then i can automate in lives clips. stepic for example do that. its easy to build tracks with that function

really cool. If you are still into sequencers, i'd love for you to cover the OTHER gold sequencer standard (IMO) - the Audiorealism Acid Bassline pattern sequencer. It allows you to use midi notes to play predefined patterns. A cool addition to this Ryk 185 style / Metropolis sequencer would be to have another depth to the sequencer where you can sequence sequences.

thank u! i'm always into sequencers. i'll check the acid bassline out! yes i'm totally with you on the ability to sequence sequences. a bit like song mode on the elektron boxes, which i've used a lot in the past. what might work there would be to create some presets that are internal to the device (saved with pattr), then use automation in live to switch between them.

@@p__meyer i was even thinking maybe we can (ab)use the preset system in live 11 and then just make a device that switches preset via midi note. I've seen some wild stuff with macro presets..like morphing and sequencing..so cool!

This is incredible! The loose parameter is genius. Have you checked out Iftah/Skinnerbox Sting sequencer? It has a parameter that automatically converts to a MIDI clip. Id love to know how to add that to a sequencer

@@p__meyer extremely late to the reply, but YES! dumps to midi clip. Sting does this and it's a really nice workflow enhancement for saving/editing the sequences

@@RyanSmith-sr8yx yeah. this one doesn't have it but I will be making some paid sequencers over the next year or so, and will definitely include this feature.
