200 Six it Runs it Idles How We Did It
Our 1966 200 cid Ford was a Question mark on the Falcon. Would it make the car worth the $500 price tag. The Things we ran into here can be real problems on a Mustang or Fairlane as well.

We liked the two helpful tips. Use water when starting up an engine for the first time. The second is keeping your face away from the carburetor during initial start up. Thank you for making your videos and keep them coming!!

Had a 250 L6 in my 71 Maverick. I believe it would survive an atomic blast. One tough engine. Not fast but reliable. Decent on fuel but it suffered with the shakes at idle.

Runs very quiet and sounds very solid. The fact that it started easy after you got everything prepped bodes well for the condition of the engine as well. My theory is that a lot of sixes and small 2bbl V-8's from that era were abandoned not because they had major problems but because the owners decided they wanted a more "glamorous" car. And back in the 50's and 60's there were a LOT of glamorous cars. The 2 bbl Y-block eight (239 c.i.) in my '54 Ford was brought back to life several years ago and it still runs quiet and functions reliably. It hadn't run for decades prior to being recommissioned.

That vintage six is music to my ears. Very nice! The idle mix by ear is old school but it works. Vacuum guage is helpful too for that.

Good tip to use an adjustable wrench on the ear of the alternator. I just dope slapped myself for never thinking of that. I've always used a pry bar against the alternator case, fully aware of the fact that a slip could ruin the case if it suddenly put concentrated pressure on the wrong part of the aluminum. Even though I've never done that, it's always awkward and prone to slipping.

Why would you ever run straight concentrate coolant unless you are trying to blow the engine? Coolant doesn't transfer heat, it only keeps the water from freezing or boiling. The water does all the work. Never run straight coolant concentrate without water. The engine will overheat and possibly become damaged.

When does the engine block begin to rust when you put straight water inside the cooling system?

@@overbuiltautomotive1299 Correct. That's why I NEVER EVER NO NOT EVER DO THAT! It takes a special additive to neutralize the corrosion once the rust begins!
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 9 ай бұрын
True. BUT, we are only testing the engine. Not putting it on the streets. As you saw, it already had straight water use issues prior to us buying it ; ie the rust in the water pump neck. I use the straight water to sus out leaks in the cooling system on an unknown like that one.Better to have it puke water than coolant, yes? Now that I know that the hoses are shot I'll replace the hoses (remember I said we were going to replace the lower hose). Then run some corrosion killer through the system. Then flush the system and finally add in coolant.

@AutoRestoMod 9 ай бұрын
That one was from Rock. I wanted to see what we could do in a pinch. The original size opening was 1.25 and we have a radiator that is 1.50. I think the radiator is for a V8 Falcon or Fairlane.
