This seems like an ok ratchet for the price, it is made by Gearwrench and uses an alternating twin pawl design to achieve 100 tooth count which is a decent design, the biggest drawback is it does have a pretty loose anvil and under certain conditions it does try to jam up until it is shimmed tighter.

I totally agree. The higher tooth ratchets have more drawbacks then benefits. I own many sprag roller ratchets with no backdrag or slop. They are the top as far as those criteria is concerned. I never use any of them. Ever. You need a bit of slop to extract your tool

I have the similar Husky 100 tooth 3/8ths flex head and the direction switch, dual pawls and internals are all identical, the only difference is the anvil is a quick release. I really like mine its been a solid ratchet, I had read they were both made by Gearwrench, i was glad to see it had an O-ring inside it, i feel like GW did not skimp too much on quality. I did oil mine with a bit of napa air tool oil seemed to smooth it out a bit, anything much thicker seemed to cause problems since its dual pawl. Nice Vid! Good luck with the new tool and enjoy!

All manufactured by Apex tools, along with Matco. Husky is the working class Matco, literally.

If that's similar to my Gearwrench ratchet, it's pretty durable. Project farm did a review of a ton of ratchets and found the Gearwrench 90 tooth to be superior to all and the survey included all of the truck brands. He might have included the Autozone one as well. If it's slightly inferior to the Gearwrench, even that is not a big deal. After all, the Gearwrench was superior to all competitors.

I recently did use a gear wrench 120xp long handle flex head to install a lower alternator bolt on a 2006 Corolla. It was the only ratchet in my collection (around 60) that was able to operate in the confined space and give me enough leverage. I agree that they do feel strained under load and the higher tooth count does makes them weaker. It's a trade off.

I know what you mean about the older duralast. I bought a short one in a pinch and it was at that point that I realized the Orient manufactured tools had caught up to American made in quality. This was long before tekton and gearwrench became popular.

I have some Duralast and Husky ratchets. They are not bad. My go to ratchet is a 36 tooth 3/8 Craftsman Professional flex head. It has never given me any trouble. I clean and lube my ratchets periodically. Fine tooth ratchets get a little 3 and 1 oil. For coarse tooth ratchets I apply wheel bearing grease sparingly with a drop of 3 and 1 oil.

I had a 90 tooth gearwrench and it was a nice ratchet.. it worked decently, but I absolutely despise the sloppy snap ring and paper thin cover plate of those and the older craftsman’s. I like the icon but there are times I wish I had just bought more Capri, or more of the oem’s. The only complaint I have is with their swivel heads..they swivel and do not index. Yes they can be tightened but it would be better to index.. otherwise I feel the OEM is a fantastic ratchet that is well suited to frequent use, for all but the tightest areas.

Agreed I've been looking at then for a bit now but I'm not gonna buy one. I'm avoiding these new duralast tools.

BIG CAT 🐈 It's "semi-locking".. not indexing..☝️ Personally, I like semi-locking flexhead ratchets

did you have to retrofit your matco ratchet with a plastic washer?

Your a collector, not a user. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Gearwrench design." Back drag" never became an issue til the 90s when saturday afternoon mechanics had computer access.

Na it's always been an issue, maybe just brought more to the forefront as vehicles became more and more cramped in the 90's. I use gearwrench almost exclusively but even I know there are problems with the loose design the larger the fastener is you'd like to remove/tighten. And you can be both a user and a collector, don't have to get in your feels about it.
