Autumn cycling in the Netherlands [154]

A beautiful Autumn Thursday afternoon in the city park of Utrecht in the Netherlands. With temperatures well over normal people dress as if it is the middle of Summer but the falling leaves give away it is really the 29th of September and Autumn is well on its way.
At 2pm people of all ages and backgrounds pass on their bikes on this car free cycle path. They are on their bicycles for all sorts of reasons as can be seen from their clothes, their belongings and the way they cycle. In haste or with all the time in the world.
There are no children: they are all in school. There are children to be heard in the distance. A class was playing in the park. The sound is original. It was a relaxing and very quiet afternoon.
Dutch utility cycling at its most beautiful. It just had to be filmed.

If I were in a position to pick up and move this is where I would live. I love to cycle for pleasure and to do errands. These people know what it's all about. quality of life not quantity. most European countries are like this. love love love

@DxDutch you are welcome to listen to anything you like while watching this video. But many people who are not familiar with Dutch cities are often amazed by the absence of noise in our cities in the Netherlands. I wanted to show that.

Ik was naar het liedje "distance" van Christina Perri aan het luisteren en toen klikte ik op deze video, zette ik het geluid van deze video uit en begon gewoon te kijken. De muziek past er erg goed bij, moet je ook eens proberen! :D Verder erg leuke video, altijd interessant, aapies kijken haha

@MikeRubbo You are absolutely right there Mike, good discussion will be constructive. I agree, beautiful and peaceful surroundings are conducive to cycling pleasure. Basically you need two types of cyclepaths: one kind green or rural, to enjoy the surroundings, and one kind not separated from other roads, for cycling at night, to increase social safety. My wife feels uncomfortable cycling in the dark through a wooded stretch.

Depends on the fixture and the content, normaly you leave them on. But there are many models on the market, even office bags that allow easy clipping on the back of a cycel. Those you take with you!

I think its officially "keep one hand on the handle bar" unofficially its "don't crash into anyone and keep your line" its mostly that others can predict where you are going what is important, if they can't predict it you will get scolded for it by the other bikers.

so quiet and peaceful its almost surreal. Do th cyclists leave their panniers on their bikes or do they take them off at their destination?

Gromitdog1 They leave them on. You can attach fastbinders through them which makes them difficult to remove as well.

Wow, so different than N America. I live in Victoria Canada and its supposed to be well populated with cyclists but its nothing like there. Wish it were. Everyone here seams to drive and really dislike cyclists. They think cars are for the road. Gee, I wonder why we have an obesity problem!

Is that as fast as Dutch bike can go or are they simply pacing themselves? I'm thinking of purchasing a Gazelle Toer Populair, but if that's as fast as they can go, forget it.

We are Dutch: Why go any faster when you're not in a hurry? The bike won't get any faster, you'll have to do it yourself.

Dutch bikes are for practical use, not for sports.But they will go as fast as you want them to go. You just have to do is yourself.

We use our bikes as a practical means of getting from A to B most of the time. It's often the fastest way to get around. Well designed infrastructure allows for this, without very high speeds. There are people racing bikes, but they do it for sport not as utility.

I've had a Gazelle Toer Popular export for almost a year now. I love it, and it goes at a pretty good clip.

Kevin15047 If you want to go fast get a road bike. People outside of the US bicycle more for the pure pleasure of it and for running errands. I have a Pashley and it's very heavy but goes as fast as I want it to go but life is too short to always be in a hurry so I ride for enjoyment of seeing the worlds.
