Playing our first gig infront of a proper audience ever. Anglesea Australia. Selmer series 3 soprano with Link HR.
I’m not pro. At all. Am a bit ‘pitchy’ on the Selmer. Had a Yani which I could keep perfectly in tune, but sold that and went with the open sound of this Selmer. Was the closest to my idol Branford that I could get. The Yani played in tune and was better ergs I felt, but long notes on the Selmer sing better FOR ME. Not everyone. In case it’s of interest, I was a trained classical trumpeter up until leaving school. Discovered jazz, not enough time to keep the embouchure up, took up sax as it’s easier to pick up and blow (for me). Fingering and lung work surprisingly similar to trumpet. I can open the card once a year and still have a great play (don’t ask the neighbours though). I personally feel that you need the sound in your head before you can make it come from the instrument. Listen to lots, memorise the sound so it is playing in your head, then reach for that sound. Close your eyes and try to only hear what is coming out and from the objective point of a listener. Then when it sounds clean and sweet, put your own soul into it.

I’ve played and watched people play this standard for hundreds of hours and I can confidently say this is the most beautiful one I’ve ever heard.

I love the decay on the sound of the horn. It fades away beautifully. I guess that's great breath control. Fab tone!

It goes deep in my heart. Some of the most touching piece I've heard through a long life with music as performer and listener. I wish I could play my soprano like that - then I wouldn't ask for more in this life.

I play this most days, beautiful tone and improvisation, one of my favourite KZfaq videos, I play soprano myself but nowhere near this level. Lovely sensitive guitar accompaniment. Altogether a delight.

Links can be pitchy. I have one. Surprisingly the very cheap Yamaha 4C 5C has better intonation but, sacrifices dynamics a bit. You sound great. I have played a Yani 901s for 20 years. Upgrading to a Yani S0W010 in a few months to get the ergonomics of the bent neck.

Lovely version and I can hear the Brandford Marsalis influence. That beautiful sweet round tone on the high notes. Reminds me a bit of his solo on Little Wing for Sting. This was a few years back though. What are you up to now?

Good sound the Sop is not easy to play. 🐊I teach trumpet but won't perform with it but more power for the diaphragm and helps the the saxophone the harmonics. Cheers

Thank goodness you don't have that IRRITATING and NAUSEOUS Kenny G sound! I have a series 80 soprano sax with a #6 Jody Jazz mouthpiece, but I would like to get the one that Steve Lacy used. Anyway, great job and beautiful tone!❤❤❤

Hi. It’s a modern HR Otto link 6. Reed is probably a 2 1/2 Rico royale. I’m not a pro so my set up isn’t exactly the best one.

He's more in tune than like 90% of sop players out there. He may be a few cents off here and there (the first phrase was a little rough), but I didn't find it detracted much of anything from this lovely performance.
