I googled it, and apparently Mount Fuji (also affectionately nicknamed Fujisan or sometimes Onna Fuji) is a girl. Gotta love a tall woman.

I think the cat captain should be called either Arthur, Walter, or Otto as they all fell like grumpy old man names. Perhaps you should try to age him up a bit to show that he's been here a long time.

Insted of a side show make it so he will go up the mountain on a waterfall and every so often he will give letters to the competitors about how they made it to a point of interest like the bamboo forest and to congratulate them
