Here's my latest exploration with auxetic structures. I added some simple tiles that can combine to make impressive artworks! Oh... and I did my first 2 WEEK print!
🏆 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐑𝐔𝐋𝐄𝐒 🏆
Submit your Auxetic Art as a 'Make' on the Thangs model page for either the 18mm Diagonal Tile ( than.gs/m/977208 ) or the 30mm Diagonal Tile ( than.gs/m/977243 ).
The two unique Makes with the most likes on 01/30/24 will win a $200(1st) and $100(2nd) gift card to either MatterHackers or 3DJake (your choice!)
My personal favorite Make will win a Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo with AMS Lite (shipping restrictions may apply).
Thanks to Thangs for sponsoring the prizes for this competition!

Thanks for watching, and I hope you'll join the competition if you've got a 3D printer (and want another one!). I'll try to get up a video about how I set up my multipass prints nowadays in Prusa Slicer, but the process is pretty similar to what I've shown in earlier videos using the technique. You can see my webpage about it here: makeanything.design/multipass-multicolor/ And of course check out my Thangs profile for lots of Auxetic shapes and more : than.gs/u/1197855

The large grid is absolutely stunning! Especially in the dark. Printing a single model for 2 weeks straight is already very impressive, but having it also be print in place is crazy. Excellent work!

2:20 - I love seeing the propogation wave as it passes over the length of the sheet. Glad to see the effect was even more obvious in the huge print! Maybe there's an way to link multiple assemblies together to get a sheet that's larger than the print bed - with less risk if one part fails.

A tip for stuck prints like the tiles at 8:00 - don't try to bash the spatula under them violently, especially with your hand on the other size just waiting for you to slip and slice your hand open, simply grab anything solid and gently tap tap tap the end of the spatula instead. It works wonders.

Heres an idea 💡, from the functional print loving half of your audience. Make the austhetic part thinner and stronger. Now you can print a support lattice using minimal material on a smaller printer, which expands to become larger. Then you can place your fill pieces both into the existing lattice as well as into the openings... Now you have printed much larger surfaces using a small printer And by using less plastic than if you had printed the lattice to be your desired size and glued it. For your bonus round, figure out how to print it on two levels so that when you expand it to its maximum size, There are pieces on hinges that fall down into the openings to close them off from the top. Now you have an expandable table without any holes in it at its largest size. Flip it over and all those hinged caps pop back out, and you can close it back up

I wonder if it's possible to print an auxetic design that expands in all 3 dimensions? That could lead to some really interesting possibilities, though the mechanics would probably be difficult - I'd guess you'd have to venture into compliant mechanisms.

Hi Devin! Been watching for quite a while and I think I'm about ready to get my first PLA 3d printer. I know you've done videos in the past recommending printers for beginners but it's been a while and new ones are always getting released. Would you consider doing another one soon and perhaps including some tips for beginners? Like in this video you mentioned hairspray on the build plate to help it stick. Knowing the basics like that, plus some tips on things like unclogging a printer or the basics of using a slicer (or other tips you've learned along the way) would be invaluable to someone like me. Thank you!
