Right. The conversation seems to be going well, then things get awkward or silent when you tell them your ethnicity. Suddenly their demeanor changes or the rhythm of the conversation.

@ddacoe0

That's a cool way to look at it. I think some of us get annoyed with that question though, because it's not always asked from a place of honoring your ancestors, but more so from a place of denigrating them as sub-human categories of "race" as opposed to as individually full-fledged and complicated human beings in their own right. It's not like "hey, I want to get a better idea of the amazing and unique individuals and beautiful life stories that birthed you!" Subconsciously, it's more like they're asking "hey, what racial *CASTE* can I stick you in, and what ignorant assumptions/generalizations can I make about you based on racist labels and stereotypes? And, also how much societal value and social worth should I ascribe to you?" That's what I feel like is usually subconsciously at play when people ask those questions.

@@ddacoe0 agreed, however by responding in a certain way you are honoring your ancestors, as a indigenous Puerto Rican woman when im asked it is my opportunity to control the narrative and i may possibly change their preconceived notions. But you are definitely correct, i have found myself in a position where i was told to tell people im Italian instead . Of course I would never deny heritage. I am so honored and proud of my ancestry.

I am of mixed-race heritage and do 'not' for one moment think I have to represent my Father or Mother's heritage, only my own 'mixed heritage (because that 'is 'my race). Neither do I think I need to justify my mixed-'raceness" to those 'authors of the question "what are you" just for the benefit or need to make them more comfortable. I actually believe that this question comes from a place of 'secret' admiration 'especially from those who labour to ask it in the first place. I always promote my mixed-'raceness' ....with pride, never have I seen it as anything less, nor ever will I.

Hi Tamron hall ..all the way from South Africa...here in South Africa we are not asked who we are necessary because they can tell. We have a unique group here which is celebrated and loved by our country as we are called "coloureds" (mixed) but too us it's not based on the America term but our ow term coloured as we are mixed with so many races...an example could be me coloured I could have a white mother and black father I become go on to marry and Indian woman making a new race and so forth as South africa is so diverse Black, white,coloured(mixed) ,Indian,Muslim people. Culture is celebrated here and on each one's cultural days we embrace it altogether...and are called the rainbow nation.

I’ve just never got caring about peoples race or ethnicity in that type of way, like I interact with people as individuals based on their own personality traits as I get to know them. I couldn’t care less about what race or ethnicity someone is when it comes to how I treat them or interact with them. I don’t even care in the context of like needing to know so that I can know what slurs not to use around them because I don’t use any of those slurs anyways, even in private, so that’s not even a concern of mine. As a white person I’ve never once had someone use the way I look as a basis for how to interact with me, at least that I know of, so I can’t imagine doing it to anyone else. It’s just such a weird concept and mindset to me.

Race and ethnicity comes up quickly in the Entertainment industry and in Entertainment casting because it is unfortunately still run by racists who perpetuate the generational ignorance and racist views of the colonizers and conquistadors. A story is a story no matter who plays the part unless it is a historical story in a historical context that needs to reflect a certain tribe of people and a certain period of time and a certain location or place in the world that the story occurs. You want to get a person to be as closely associated with the True original person as possible. But if we are just dealing with original stories of any kind and all kind of stories about people and situations those stories can be played by ANYONE. Hollyweird and ALL productions need to stop with the lies and lame excuses why their is still in 2021 no diversity in their casting. The TRUTH is, It is basically because they are all racists. There is a WHOLE WORLD full of talented people and they do not all have white skin and they do not all have a jewish background. If the writers, producers, directors, filmmakers and casting directors aren't flexible enough as to WHO can play those parts they are just admitting and acknowledging their ignorance, racism and exclusionary practices. They are admitting that they cannot grow or be flexible enough to see those stories as inclusive universal stories and experiences that all PEOPLE WORLDWIDE experience. Because in the end, an original story with no specific historical context or location, it can be played by ANYONE. A great actor or actress will draw you into that story no matter what color their skin is or what background they are from. The script and or story is about a certain HUMAN Experience and it is about the great acting. The most important thing is that the story is believable and resonates with the audience, and there is GREAT ACTING. Great actors do not have a certain skin color or a certain religious background & connections or look a certain way. Great Actors they come in all shades, colors and from all different backgrounds. What color your skin is and what your ethnic background, and religious and or political beliefs are makes no difference and it is secondary to the story especially if it's not a historical production or historical piece of work. The majority of stories that are created can be played by ANY GREAT ACTOR in the WORLD from ANY BACKGROUND. THEY JUST NEED TO STOP WITH THE LIES & EXCUSES WHY THERE ISN'T MORE DIVERSITY in CASTING in HOLLYWEIRD & EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD IN ALL ENTERTAINMENT AND MEDIA PRODUCTIONS. STOP WITH THE LIES & EXCUSES.Diversity in casting is needed more now today than ever before. But it will never change if the Entire World is still stuck on Stupid and refuses to change their evil racist ways. That’s why I encourage all entertainers that have made it to a certain level of success as well as independent media producers, I encourage them to work together and do your productions independently away from the Racist Evil Hollywood machine. Soon It’s gonna be 2022 and they are still operating like they are stuck in 1492. The devil and his demons ain't gonna never change I don't know why people keep asking them to change.
@JustinLHopkins
@JustinLHopkins Жыл бұрын
Hollywood is more diverse than its ever been. Movies depict minorities more than ever before as well. Progress is incremental and you’re just going to have to accept that. Why are you complaining about casting in 2022, when 40 years ago, 99% of actors were white? Focus on the progress that’s been made. Some of the wealthiest and most successful celebrities are lgbtq and people of color. This wouldn’t happened decades ago. Tremendous progress has been made. However, it doesn’t make sense to over-diversify casts because movies need to reflect reality in some sense and America is still a majority white nation. Casting minorities is a much bigger problem in other countries. In Asia, you won’t find any non-Asian actors and the same can be said for many other parts of the world. Bollywood and so on. Hollywood is probably the most diverse of all the major film hubs.

@lisa porter yes but many of the hollywood AFRICAN AMERICAN celebrities dont look black they look light skin & mixed race.ebony mag says they use this lotion fer.la which makes them look far more light skin & mixed race and not black anymore. Im not surprised everybody seems to change their appearance these days.
