When I was a freshman in college, I made a LOT of "freshman mistakes". These are some of the mistakes I made and I hope that this advice will help you not repeat my freshman mistakes!! This advice can go to all college freshmen- not just freshmen at UConn, but all of my mistakes happened at UConn lol so I guess it applies there too!
I hope that these tips, tricks, and college advice will be helpful in your freshman year at whatever college you go to, and they could potentially help boost your gpa and have better mental health.
These are my top ten mistakes that I made as a college freshman at uconn, but make sure to stick around until the end of the video to learn the NUMBER ONE FRESHMAN MISTAKE that I saw so many of my fellow uconn freshman make in our first year of college.
Make sure to leave a comment below if this college advice helped you, and don't forget to like this video and subscribe to my channel for more uconn / college / sorority advice!

Sometimes going to class is just super worthless and you don’t really learn anything, especially a lot of gen eds. I would not go to my English class as often as I do if she didn’t take attendance.

@@avaresio73 the don't cram part is what i did it's helpful to study in advance AS WELL AS CRAMMING just don't pull an all nighter wake up a few hours before the test to cram more info in so you'll be refreshed for example the test is at 8:00 AM ok so you could sleep all day and wake up at night and study all night till 8:00 AM that way you get refreshed right before the test and you are not sleepy

Solution to the #1 problem: Go to a college far enough away that it would be extremely hard to go home. For example, you wouldn’t want to have to fly home from a college all the way across the country because it takes too much time and effort, plus it’s expensive.

Hey girl! I’m going somewhere that I don’t know ANYONE either! I’ll be there this fall. I would suggest going on your schools Facebook page. They make snapchat group chats on there all the time just join a few or just post “hey who wants put in a snap chat gc? Comment your username and I’ll add you!” I promise you so many people will answer you. That’s how I made a lot of acquaintances! And then I’ve made friends just adding people on snap bc people post like little introduction posts on the Facebook page. Follow people on insta and add people on snap. Then you’ll see familiar faces in the fall and you can be like oh I think I follow you from the Facebook page!! That’s also how I met my roommate, and as long as you have a roommate you two can always go make friends together!!

I've heard the recommendation to leave high school everything behind a bajillion times and I just don't get it. I'm proud of the things I did in highschool, and I literally (I mean that in the sense of actuality, not emphasis) cannot imagine my life without them. They aren't my friends, they're my family, and I'm not going to leave them behind just to ~~expand my horizons~~ or whatever. Networking is nice and all, but so is the love my friends and I have for each other. I'm sick of feeling like I shouldn't still be talking with them on a daily basis just because we aren't in highschool anymore.

Theo Wild i definitely understand this as i had a really difficult time with this too! I dont think i really explained myself well in that tip, and what i really meant to say is that you shouldnt be skipping out on opportunities in college to sit in your room for hours talking to your home friends. Its definitely okay to keep talking to them and stay in touch, and you can expand your horizons while still maintaining a close relationship with them! It takes a balance that was definitely difficult for me to learn, but i think by *slightly* loosening my attachment helped me breathe a little bit and made the adjustment a lot easier in the long run

just a note abt eating on campus: any food that nourishes your body is good food (hint: all food nourishes your body). If eating healthy makes you feel healthy then all the power to ya! Look into different eating options at the dining hall. But the transition into college can be hard and just giving your body nutrients is all that really matters. Don't sweat this whole idea of the freshman 15 and just listen to your body

EVS I think I'll always go home because there is literally nothing to do at college. I mean honestly, nothing. I go to a very small campus, and I am thinking of transferring to a bigger college which I have always wanted to go to! (The size isn't why I am transferring!)

This is like the 6th video i've watched where its been said to not have a vehicle on campus freshman year and I just think it's funny because I start college in August and I'm going to have a vehicle on campus only because the college i'm going to is 3 hours away from home, near the state border, and near a big city. Needless to say I won't be making a ton of trips home because 4 lane highways scare me and weekend traffic is crazy there.

Idk bout that last tip. On campus tuition is on average about 40k on top of normal tuition. Numbers are higher if you aren’t a resident of the state. Living back home is definitely more financially manageable than being that much in debt
@avaresio73
@avaresio73 4 жыл бұрын
My last tip wasn’t in regard to whether one should live on campus or not- it was in regard to students who are already living on campus. Its without a doubt that it’s cheaper to live at home, but for on-campus students my #1 recommendation is to not go home because it makes the adjustment more difficult

Oh wow I did not expect such a quick response. Sorry if I came off a bit bitchy. But yeah I been wanting to go to an out of state institution for the longest time ever and have the grades to do so. But I was disheartened after learning the cost of boarding and out of state tuition. How did you manage?
@avaresio73
@avaresio73 4 жыл бұрын
William Giron Im very fortunate that I got a lot of scholarships and am In-state so my parents were able to cover the majority of my tuition- honestly if you want to go out of state the best thing you can do is try to get an Honors scholarship if your school offers it and try to get tons of local scholarships that organizations near you offer!

Alyssa Varesio thanks for the info! Thankfully, my state university is pretty good (Arizona State University) and my family is willing to help. On top of that I may have scholarship opportunities and financial aid helping me so I’m pretty relieved that I don’t have to be as competitive anymore as the universities I wanted to attend were quite selective, So it relieves a lot a stress. Thanks for the reply and have a great rest of your day

it really depends on the school and dorm! some uconn dorms have a kitchenette but honestly most don't :( i cook when I'm stressed too so I TOTALLY get it- I would usually make one of my older friends let me use their kitchen, or I would use my microwave and try to get creative haha

it definitely depends on where you are, but when I studied abroad I did a homestay and the most important thing I did was to not text and call my family and friends from home every second of the day, I really tried to get close with my host family and people in the community around me and throw myself into the culture! it was hard at first but because i pushed myself it became easier a lot quicker
