To answer your confusion in the beginning, not grandfather, but great grandfather. Sozin had Azulan, Azulan had Ozai. Roku had Jinzuk, Jinzuk had Ursa. Ozai and Ursa had Zuko. So Zuko is the great grandchild of both Sozin, and Roku, and why Iroh said he is battling two sides of himself inside. Ozai married Roku's granddaughter.

I have a suspicion that Fire Nation ladders would have to be more fire resistant than regular wood.

Zhao being made Admiral holds true to the animated because he was made Admiral during the Blue Spirit episode. My working theory was that Zhao was working with someone close to the fire lord. Glad to see that in action in this telling of the story.
