The series is set in a war-torn world inspired by various Asian and Indigenous cultures where certain people can "bend" one of the four classical elements-water, earth, fire or air. Aang, the "Avatar" and the last living Airbender, is the bridge between the mortal and spirit worlds, and the only one capable of bending all four of the elements instead of just one. The Avatar maintains the balance of the world and nature to bring peace, and Aang is now faced with the responsibility of ending the ambitions of the militaristic Fire Nation to conquer the world. With his new companions Katara and Sokka, Aang sets out to master the four elements while pursued by Zuko, the exiled crown prince of the Fire Nation, who seeks to regain his honor by capturing him.[

Also overlooked by many. In the animated version Aang was initially better than Katara in waterbending and had to teach her, which got her mad. Wonder why that didn't translate into the live action... for modern audiences :D

I haven’t heard anyone yelling about this so I’m here to do it. ONLY ONE AIR BENDER HAD BEEN ABLE TO FLY AT THIS POINT AND ITS NOT AANG! It’s not fancy falling either my gf was watching interviews with the cast and irohs actor said that he would want to be an air bender so he could fly. ALSO. FIRE BENDERS CANNOT FLY. I didn’t put this one first bc the only examples we see of it are comet boosted and then kyoshi in avatar state. But still. It’s pissed me off.

Sooo… Aang glides, he doesn’t fly. He does it in the animated show, too, he leaps air currents and bounds from branch to branch or pole to pole alll the time. He flies with his glider. He’s not Superman flying in the show, nor is he quite at Zaheer level, he’s not going into the atmosphere and soaring long distances. And firebenders can fly with rocket feet during the comet. Azula does it without the comet in the cartoon 💀

i think at the end of the day avatar fans love the show to much. nothing will ever compar to the master class of a show that the OG was, same thing happend when korra came out its a problem that nick will have no matter what. they can make a 10/10 show and it still wont be enough (not saying this show is a 10/10 lol)

I liked Korra, I thought first 3 seasons were good. Not outstanding like Airbender, but man that 3rd season had the perfect bad guy motive and they should have ended it there. When they announced this live action was going to be Airbender I thought, even with the creators attached, they are hamstringing themselves to Aang. They built this massive world and they chose to do Aang again. I think their silent goal was to erase the memory of M. Night's disasterpiece. Mission: failed...and now this lackluster show exists as well. Double fail. Should have been a new Avatar if anything at all.

Changing the action I can understand. Changing the pace I can understand. But changing the characters, and key plots is where the line needs to be drawn. Easy example is Bumi changed into a bitter old man instead of a fun loving mentor for Aang who is happy to see him. Changing Aang from a kid who goofs off, and shows tons of emotion into a sad depressed child who constantly talks about failing the world. So basically, a combination of each main character having their core personalities assassinated, and multiple episodes plots thrown together in a half baked hollywood style script. @@CopaExMachina

What's up with Aang not bending a drop of water the entire season? and why doesn't katara need a master? she is her own master? in the original, she was self-thought and she was so so so mad at Pakku for not wanting to teach her but she still convinced him to teach her. but in this one she is her own master and she doesn't need any experienced waterbender's help to learn more? why? coz girl power? WTF...and why was Zuko so watered down? It felt like Zuko from the end of season 2 where he is finally accepting that his honor doesn't only lie in capturing the avatar. Zuko needed to be a lot more of an asshole for the 1st season. And why there is so little of roku in the entire season? Roku felt responsible for the War as Sozen was his friend and he ignored Sozen's actions when he was alive. he felt responsible for the 100-year war. This is also totally missing from the show. There is so much about this show I did not like...I really wanted to...I love the original series so much....when the trailer finally dropped, I may have seen it 30 times straight. I did love some changes, though. I loved that Ang met Monk Gyatso in the spirit world. That made sense. Visuals, hand-to-hand combat, and bending were not that bad. Bhumis being mad at Aang also made sense. 6/10 from me. Despite this, I am looking forward to season two and I know they will change a lot but I hope they understand the heart of the show and deliver a better season 2.

On Roku: they even made sure to switch it up and have Kyoshi do specifically what Roku did in the cartoon. More girl boss BS. Gyatso is a net positive in Netflix's Avatar but for me, he was completely ruined by senseless prologue #2. I didn't like the fight scenes in this at all. They felt like producers and writers demanded a fight needed to place here to break up the monotony rather than a need to serve the story. There was no cleverness to them or the story. And don't get me started on what they did to Wan Shi Tong.

I’m not going to lie a lot of these arguments don’t make sense, you explain how a show is set up with action and exposition. I do think it’s just really popular to hate this because of its history and how deep the show meant to all of us. But the creative changes do make sense when you add more realistic ideas. It doesnt need to be 100% copy of the show to have that depth. The show has always been praised by its dive into deep topics and choosing to pursue it better resonates with fans over the characters and how they grow and change.

Everything to come out of this franchise after the original series has been "okay" at best. Knowing that and putting it together with the current social climate, I had no hopes for this series right from the get go. Being an animator, it also takes a bit of effort to win me over to a live action adaptation, but that's more of a personal preference.

@@CopaExMachina I half agree, but if we're being honest, their track record after the original series hasn't exactly been stellar either. Though I'm a certified degenerate weeb, I've actually never seen the One Piece anime or read the manga, and didn't watch the Netflix series either. I have a friend who's really into the manga who didn't really enjoy the Netflix adaptation though, whatever that's worth.

I hate the girl playing Azula’s character the most. I was looking forward to an evil looking Azula, but then they casted an innocent faced girl who looks can’t embody the character well. One look at Azula in the cartoon and we knew she was a force to be reckoned with.

@@maervo4179 it's easy to say that, but you're out of your mind if you don't realize Azula is the most difficult character to have to act because her character is a blend between sociopath and pyscopath. How many professional actors play the Joker compellingly? 1 out of 4 that have tried, and the Joker is just a sociopath. I thought the actress did an above average job compared to the rest of the cast filling the shoes of the character. She didn't overact those elements before you're supposed to notice it more obviously and separate from her evil motivations and maladaptive nature, but it is there. To me, it's an insult to be like "oh, but she doesn't look like it." That's evidence of a problematic bias you have when looking at people and deciding who they are. "Evil people have to look evil" -- if you can't detect evil in a soft curved featured face, then you're screwed. If you can't detect authority, seriousness, and give respect with a person looking a certain way, even bigger problem. The actress looks fine; she has a base look, and adjustments based on the emotions.

@@EbonySeraphim dude is writing a whole essay 😂 Of course Azula is a hard role, but i don't think she is a good fit overall. I can tell you that it is crucial to get Azula's looks on point for the series. Because many young boys had a crush on her when we were younger. Thats why people complain about her looks not fitting. But it is not her looks only, when she gets herassed by father her facial expression and acting is just bad. There are also other bad casts, like Katara, she is just not impulsive like the Cartoon Character. Another thing is, that the Uncle Iroh Cast is good, but his dialogue is so bad. They wasted so much potential there. The show just fucked up, this is why the original creators left. It is better than the movie, but i would say at least a 6/10. I would recommend to just watch the cartoon if you don't know the story.

I really like the casting of Aang. Too bad the writers go by the adage “Tell, don’t show” so the only thing he has to do is vomit exposition for an hour every ep. What a waste of so much effort. These are the people that thought they deserved more money Avatar started out badly and just got worse. Despite some fantastic casting, the visuals are muddy and tedious amount of exposition makes watching the show feel like work. Whatever happened to “show don’t tell”? Hollywood thinks we are all morons.

Babyface Azula was the only reason Admiral Zhao was successful in this version, is a little sexist but hey could have been worse I gave this a 6 out 10

True on the Azula front, but I couldn't get past the severe miscast of her. I gave it a 4. There are some brief moments of the old Avatar in this but in the end, it was too boring and just on for noise.

@@CopaExMachina Pretty much everything, the visuals mostly.Shyamalan filmed in real locations at the northpole and vietnam and he used film instead of digital.The environment looks natural and realistic.Netflix overused cgi and green screen combined with the toy costumes, it looks atrocious.The netflix version didnt had any solid concept for the show, they try to carbon copy the cartoon with all of its charm instead of transforming it into live action conditions.Hard 2 tell to whom the show is directed, we see gore scenes with ppl burning alive, killed and joyfull, goofy, smiling child actors in the same series, its unwatchable.The cartoon was for kids yet it was mature and therefore for adults as well.The new show doesnt have any depth nor maturity but instead violence and tries to imitate wisdom by punching randomly iconic lines.
