Anime is traditionally Japanese produced from writing to the animation. Since ATLA is written and produced by Americans, it's not often considered traditional 'Anime'.

In its name its defined that its about the animation style. I never got this reasoning, why should shows that are similar in almost everything not be considered anime. Thats like saying american cartoons arent cartoons because they were maily produced in france when they started to pop off. Its goofy to think like that

if it's not japanese, most people won't consider it anime, even if the art style is similar, and to be honest I think the same haha Edit: Anime is the japanese word for cartoons or animation, so it make sence that you only use it for japanese shows
