AVATAR "THE STORM" REACTION (1x12) - Is This The Moment That Changed Zuko's Life?

Up until this point I had suspected that Zuko was actually a good person and that I would like him. WELL, now I truly respect him, not only is he likeable but he is brave and honorable. Just the way he refused to fight back against his father while he was literally being scolded? and then THE FACT that he understood how he had been wrong and went to help the crew member when the storm hit the ship?? and THEN he apologized to his uncle?? Oh my God. There's so much to admire about this young man.
Oh and I didn't forget about Aang haha, actually, his story ALMOST made me cry in this episode. I still can't get over the fact that this is a 12 year old kid who has to deal with the reality of having lost EVERYONE he knew. I'm so happy he has such good friends now and the support that Katara showed him in this episode was so satisfying.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments!

It was common knowledge that the avatar went missing for 100 years and became somewhat of a myth. So in fact the firelord gave zuko an impossible mission to complete.

For perspective, Zuko was 13 years old when he was burned by his father and banished until he captured the Avatar. He had been searching for 3 years by the time Aang woke up in the iceberg. The entire Avatar series is the "4th year" of searching. Zuko is 16, Sokka is 15, Katara is 14, Aang is 12 (well, 112). The voice actor for the Fire Lord is Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker! You get your airbender tattoos when you master airbending, which includes performing master level techniques and creating your own unique airbending move. In Aang's case, he invented the air scooter! He is an unnaturally powerful individual, even as Avatars go, so getting his tattoos at 12 is remarkable

one thing to keep in mind that the task assigned to zuko about finding the avatar was a joke because the avatar had been missing for 100 years and it was even believed that the cycle had been broken

I was a lot more interested in Zuko’s backstory than Aang. At episode three, we had genocide, and now we have child abuse by a parent. Zuko is trying to practice Ozai’s definition of respect.

It still blows my mind that Nick produced a show where we have a character who is the ONLY survivor of a literal GENOCIDE. That's really dark.

One thing I appreciate after repeated viewings is how the show constantly depicts characters as a mirror to each other. This episode is the clearest example so far. In parallel, Aang and Zuko revisit the crushing responsibility hanging over their lives that they need to redeem themselves for. Aang failed to do the right thing, while Zuko did the right thing but was punished for it. While Aang had a positive father figure in Monk Iatso who inspires him to do the right thing now, Zuko had an abusive father figure that forced him to take this form of hate and rage. Much like the Avatar form itself, understanding the perspectives of all these characters, how they contrast and what they can learn from each other, makes them stronger.

4:09 LOL, are you Iroh? 😂 Joking aside, Aang and Zuko's back story is definitely a highlight of Book 1. Some people do get emotional, but not everyone. What's really tragic for Zuko is how much worse his banishment is when you think about it. Zuko's father, grandfather and great grandfather had used the Fire Nation's immense resources to find the Avatar for 100 years and didn't find a single clue. So, in my opinion, Zuko's father was convinced the Avatar no longer existed and he intentional put this false hope in his son's head that capturing the Avatar would restore his honor. Thankfully for Zuko, Aang was still alive, but I think Zuko's father expected Zuko to spend the rest of his life chasing a ghost.

The idea that Aang ran away from home and that Gyatso died not knowing what happened to him is sad, and that scene of Zuko sitting in his cabin looking at his family pictures, all he has left of them, is heartbreaking. He's so twisted up inside, trying so hard not to feel the pain that it turns to anger instead. Maybe I'm just getting sentimental in my old age.

The reason you didn't see any female airbenders is cause airbenders are monks and taught to let go of materialistic attachments. Female airbenders lived in the Western Air Temple separated from the males. Northern Air Temple, Eastern Air Temple, and Southern Air Temple were all inhabited by the men.

Random fun fact: you might've noticed Aang having tattoos while all the other kids didn't. This is because to get the arrow tattoos an airbender must master all the forms of airbending. Aang being the Avatar plus an airbending prodigy, he managed to master all but one of the forms at his age, so he invented the air cycle, which gave him the rank of Airbending master, and his tattoos.

Please think, you are watching to see the REACTION. Let the reactor REACT, saying, "I can't wait till you see the next, You will...Be ready for..." anything like this is a spoiler. By doing this you color the reactor's natural, organic response. After the fact is the time to discuss the events. Let the reactor experience the moment without added expectations.
@GiveMeTheRice
@GiveMeTheRice Жыл бұрын
One thing I just noticed: Zuko apologizes to two different father figures he disrespected in this episode and it seems the writers wanted to juxtapose the difference in responses. One scars and banishes him while the other simple accepts it as a mistake and forgives him

This is just a personal pet peeve of mine that I wanted to express, but it irks me when people set expectations for the reactors in the comments, such as "This episode is going to make you cry". To me that still falls within the realm of spoilers. Because it's like emotionally "prepping" the reactor for something. Obviously the point of reaction channels, is the reactions. And imo the most genuine and best reactions are when the viewer is as caught off guard as possible. So while setting certain expectations isn't overtly spoiling, I think it can still easily diminish what the reaction might have been if the reactor had been more blind-sided. Sorry for the rant lol. Glad to see someone else reacting to ATLA! =D

you're right it sucks. the worst part is what a profound lack of self-control and thought it shows. anything at all, and people NEED to address what's coming UP. with some reactors, it's actually irrelevant because by the time they upload, they're actually 5 or more episodes ahead...to say nothing of when they actually read the comments. but, I don't think she has that schedule. uploads here seem 2 weeks apart, and she seems to be going one at a time with them...that's rough considering there's 60 episodes......but, she's addressing comments from one video prior, so it's pretty clear what her schedule is

I'm drawn to both stories equally. People love Zuko for the edge half the time, and the man that comes through that edge, like with his uncle, but really i just find him relatable. With that said, people tend to dismiss Aang because he is SO positive, childish, and effortless with his talent, but really he feels struggle and despair in select areas. Aang has the advantage of the right mental toolkit...being raised by monks like the Air Nomads. He feels great sadness and pressure like anyone, but knows how to process it and cope with it most of the time, and has people who can help him. I think anyone with a distant family, or a friend-family can relate to his situation. It also takes more effort on the viewer's part, if they are not near the age of 12 or 11, to relate to Aang, but I think it's possible if you really think and engage in that mindset, or if you're around kids a lot or have kids that age in your family. Aang reminds me of my friend's son and my nephew - crazy energetic, highly creative, and slowly maturing. I relate to Zuko, but I admire Aang, and I sympathize with them both equally.

I wouldn't call this episode a "hard watch"; it's more so a) very well executed story-wise, and b) immensely revealing and humanizing (especially for Zuko). Now if you have an intense personal connection with child abuse and/or survivor's guilt, then it MIGHT be hard to watch, but even then it never gets harsh enough to be off-putting or triggering while still delivering its message loud and clear.
