Despite not usually being very music theory heavy, pop music requires skill, just different skills. Almost all the singers are great. Most bad pop singers are mostly just people who became famous some other way and decided to do pop afterwards. Also the production is very nuanced. The producers have to know their audience, how it will sound in different acoustics and how to make it stand out in different environments.
@gregtheflyingwhale64805 жыл бұрын
@@MrAllallalla well its not an excuse for the shit they are doing... I'll mention one thing that ruins your skill thing, its called voice tuning. No need to sing any more, just make a noice and computer will fix it for you....
@LordOfFlies5 жыл бұрын
@@MrAllallalla great singer... Yea sure lol
@royalcat105 жыл бұрын
@@gregtheflyingwhale6480 Unfortunately, that isn't as egregious as you make it out to be. Auto tune and similar can be used to make *minute* changes in poor intonation, but any more than *very small* changes, and it becomes unusable for this purpose. What happens when you artificially pitch shift an organic voice to a large degree, it starts to turn very robotic, like T Pain does for effect. It absolutely still requires the person to have vocal skill. It will *not* make a bad singer sound like a good singer. Unless the person sounds like someone talking through a fan, they aren't using pitch correction to a large extent. Virtually *all* modern day vocalists will use pitch correcting somewhere of some sort. Even A7X ( *GASP* ) It's because something as seemingly mundane as room temperature can throw off intonation. Auto tune exists to combat this. It *cannot* (Believably) add even a half step to a persons range. That's how little it can actually be used.

At 3:02 when Syn says he “couldn’t do it forever” it makes you realize that even the best in the game struggle, practice and work until it’s right. It may sound like a simple guitar riff but it was clearly much more complex. Love this song so much.
@expertmarketingsystems98682 жыл бұрын
He's a genius on the guitar and humble enough to admit when something was hard for him. I love this band.
@kikeenriquez4436 Жыл бұрын
I completely agree. And I relate at 7:19 where they’re talking about the hi hat pattern that Portnoy had an issue with. I can play this song but that part used to always give me trouble and I thought I was just an idiot. But if Mike Portnoy had an issue with it, I feel so much better lol
@guyincognito32011 ай бұрын
I learned this riff the other day because I knew it would be a good noodler for picking skills and had the same issues, getting that 5/2 pulloff to ring out on the 3rd string, stay ringing nicely, and then to borrow that same index finger to fret the 4th string by rolling it over, and then a second later letting the 3rd string mute with the flesh of that same finger. So that kind of crap is how guitar is played, somehow. Took a few days to get it right, and that's all I had to do.

It's really obvious but it has to be said. Portnoy fucking killed it in this track. he really was the perfect replacement for jimmy especially for this album especially for this masterpiece

Yea. I love and miss Jimmy as much as the next guy but I think Nightmare is my favorite album. It's not as straight ahead as Hail to the King, which I also really love, I don't understand all the hate for it, but this has all boxes checked. It's catchy enough, it's proggy enough, and it's mixed really well. I didn't care for the mixing or the experimental nature of The Stage. Was a major disappointment in my opinion.
@Seifer_425 жыл бұрын

I wish they had played Jimmy's isolated vocals in the bridge. =( Still, it's weird to think that so many of those lyrics that seem to be about The Rev were actually written by him…
@ExternusArmy4 жыл бұрын
Almost none of the lyrics were written by him. These days, they almost never write lyrics until they’re in the studio. That’s why they didn’t use almost any of his vocals on this entire album. They were all incoherent mumbles that were placeholders for the melody until lyrics were written. Go listen to the demos if you wanna hear what they’re like.
@dlions870814 жыл бұрын
@@ExternusArmy Dude, Matt straight up said Jimmy wrote a lot of the lyrics for this song
@ExternusArmy4 жыл бұрын
@Kyle, they make everything extremely confusing. The song itself was written mostly by Brian during Pinkly Smooth many many years ago. He was the one that cane up with the piano parts for this, as well as the Beast and the Harlot intro (which was originally a piano song). In fact, Brian said he originally wrote Fiction for Pinkly Smooth until they eventually used it for A7X. Brian and Jimmy wrote parts of it together when they would get drunk and work on it together years before Nightmare (this is what they said in interviews). From the demo version which a small portion can be found (it has Jimmy’s original vocals), the lyrics are non-existent. That’s because Matt usually helps write most of the lyrics as they need to compliment Matt’s voice. They always credit everyone for everything they do, but it’s not cut and dry.
@MataramMeuBode3 жыл бұрын
@@ExternusArmy I read an interview in which Johnny said that Jimmy wrote like 60% of the album. Obviously not all of the lyrics were ready and polished when he passed away, but he definitely did a lot for this album. Brian also said that he has a recording of an acoustic version of So Far Away, when the sound was still in the early stages, where he and Jimmy himself sing. It is almost ironic to know that much of this album is his thing and not a tribute to him.
@ExternusArmy3 жыл бұрын
Paçoqueiro, exactly like you’re saying, the story is difficult to piece together. I’ve listened to countless interviews to determine that Brian is the main writer of Fiction, only to have Jimmy as a co-writer. Obviously everything is collaborative but their process has always allowed Brian or Jimmy to bring complete songs to the band. Johnny says Jimmy wrote most of the album out of respect, but after a million interviews, you learn what they specifically wrote. For instance, Matt wrote the song Nightmare entirely on his own with virtually no contribution for anyone , including The Rev (only Syn wrote the solo as usual). He brought the song to the Rev afterwards but recorded it all on his phone. They just have so much respect for their own bandmates that they will never ever put them down. Truly respectable guys.

Though the general idea is kinda not concorded and it's kinda obvious just by paying attention. This song's really really epic but also it's not written with very tight, overly complex harmonies and unisons They had original chords, which they struggled to record with proper harmonies because Rev's chords are infamously difficult to adapt because he comes up with usual drummer stuff that're a bit weird for the rest .

I love the solo in Higher and the way it bleeds back into the main of the song again. So awesome.

fuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkk.....now i really really really need the orchestra with vocals part. Hell, i want individual tracks and experiment with different combos (drums+orchestra+back vocals or something). I would pay for that.

I can't even begin to imagine how hard it must be for you guys to breakdown the songs on Nightmare. Thank you so much for this one.

They always put heart, soul and passion to EACH song, hard or easy, short or 15 minutes like "Exist", find a song that they didn't put mad amount of work in 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤.

I think they eventually cover up all the songs in all their albums. They're just going in an unorthodox sequences like they always do, but still fcking amazing.

Honestly, these breakdown videos are beyond amazing. After hearing layer by layer, you just appreciate the songs even more. Like, at one point I'll be like "oh there's a jimmy high note here, gotta pay attention", something you wouldn't normally catch. Keep doing these guys!
