THANK YOU. Plain thank you, you're a goddess! This may be the fullest ever review of guqin as an instrument that we've come across on the internet that isn't a guide of some sort. What it looks like beneath, tuning, fingering, hands placement. Also, the drama comparison is absolutely GOLD.

Thank you so much for this video, and for the one about notation, too! These two were what allowed me to actually start learning this. I live in Estonia, and wouldn't be surprised if I were the only player here... So finding a teacher is out of question. You explain very well, and there's too few tutorials on playing guqin in the internet overall. So, thank you again!

I'm a fan of Chinese wuxia tv series and usually they have the heroes playing the qin, so I've been curious about this instrument for quite long. I especially liked the music in Zhang Jizhong's Xiao Ao Jiang Hu/Laughing in the Wind 2001. do you think they really played it with the qin?

It’s fair to say that the origin of the guqin is still unknown. It is true that the Chinese people consider it an indigenous instrument, and it is known to have been in China for over 2500 years. But sometimes we really want certainty when we can’t have it. It’s importance to the Chinese culture historically is undebatable.

Thank you for this explanation and for sharing your musical ability. When you played the seven strings from low to high, I realized that you use that musical bit to open all of your videos. Nice! I get annoyed and distracted when actors fake it while playing instruments on camera, most notably on The Untamed. I realize, though, that it would take a lot of time for actors to learn the correct movements. And editing time would be enormous. So, I try not to look at the hands! This is one of my favorite videos that you've made. Thanks again!

Nice, thank you for the insight! ^^ And the links as well, the 1st one is just hilarious XD Hehe, now I want to find the scenes in the dramas where I know Qin is being played and see just how wrong they did it XD But it's kind of baffling as to just why the drama people wouldn't do it correctly especially considering it's their own instrument, like, why do it wrong? Do people in China, like, overall/the majority know how qin is supposed to be played? Or is it simply not general knowledge? But even if it isn't...that's so lazy on the directors part or whoever is responsible for it, not looking it up. Within less than 10 minutes I now know the correct way to place it, where to sit and the hand placement, thanx to you. How come directors ignore these 3 things?

KkitKkat Yeah it’s a completely different instrument than the zither that is 古筝 Gu Zheng. That one is much bigger than Gu Qin, and with a bridge in the middle, and with more strings (usually 21 strings). They also sound very different but I like both.

If im not mistaken gu zheng is even older than than gu qin. It id the father of many east asian instruments.
@HanQ28
@HanQ28 5 жыл бұрын
Nombre Apellido I think Gu Qin has more than 3000 years of history and is absolutely the oldest instrument in China, while Gu Zheng is around 2000 years old. So although Zheng has been very influential internationally, it is much younger (comparatively) than Qin. And I suspect one of the reasons why Qin is less influential despite being so ancient is because it is so “philosophical”, contemplative and arguably “upper class”. As a result it was difficult for commoners in China (let alone commoners in other asian countries) to be familiar with and appreciate this instrument, since most commoners (as well as the power-hungry government officials and businessmen lol) back then preferred instrument-as-entertainment that is to be publicly performed and enjoyed, rather than spending contemplative, self-reflecting time with Qin that was preferred by scholars and nobleman. I know all instrument can be used for both contemplation and performance, but as mentioned in this video, Qin is unique in that it is specifically designed to only have the former purpose, and it can’t even make loud sounds, so it’s not very adaptable to other purposes.

I thank you So much for talking about the tuning, because I bought A 古琴 last year and still don't really know how to tune it. I noticed that the tuned tones are like the melodies of the song 沧海一声笑. So basically I tuned it after A song. I also searched on KZfaq for tuning, but There wasn't One with english introduction. The reason I bought it, is that I fell in love with, exactly What you described, the sound. The sound for me is more on the "colder" side, but still with A hint of warmth. Basically that is the best way I Can describe that. I would like to ask you, if you could please tell us about the notes, that are used for playing 古琴 in china!

@@user-kw8sn4kp4c I think this is because of the influence of one's Mother Tongue experience, the first spoken language that anyone is born with. I assumed that you and AveX are probably Sinophones, and English is your 2nd language; whereas Darklight is probably an Anglophone: that's why s/he could distinguish the "y" or "e" consonant or lack thereof in English pronunciation very clearly; but for any Sinophones, who are not cross-cultural linguistically trained, may not detect the differences readily, at all. More examples for any Sinophones to pronounce indistinguishable consonants of "r" or "l" are: "fried rice" vs "fly lice"!? : )
