I think your bike is a Triban RC520. Great bike - I have one myself. It's a superb all rounder but it's not light. I've recently bought (second hand) a full carbon bike that is almost 2KG lighter than my Triban... 2KG doesn't sound like much but it really makes a difference on the hills. Really well done on that climb - it's beyond me, fancy bike or not!

Cadence looked terrible ... probably because his gearing was set up wrong., That type of climb at least use a compact with a 32 at the back
@cd66061
@cd66061 5 жыл бұрын
Looking at his cadence and knowing the climb pretty well I’d say he DID have a compact with a 32 on the back! I did it a few weeks back in a sportive with semi compact up front and 32 at the back, I rode it all but on the steep bits I was grinding slower than that! It’s relentlessly steep in parts! Unless you are super strong, go bigger than 32 at the back! I’ve done the Fred Whitton a couple of times and you hit this with 90+ miles of all the steep Lakeland passes in your legs...it’s brutal...but doable! 💪🏻

@michwoz
@michwoz 5 жыл бұрын
For an individual at this level of fitness to weight ratio it should be 30t at the front and 42t at the back. I would use 34-32t on such gradients and for a climb of this length I'd still probably go around 5W/kg+. And my cadence would suck anyway.
@matthewsackman
@matthewsackman 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, looking at his cadence in that... I'm pretty sure he had something easier that 34-32 on that bike. Having just done Fred Whitton this weekend just gone, it's the most horrifying climb I've ever seen. The only people who were making it look smooth were those with a triple chain-ring!

When you are bigger guy, and not down to 'race weight', there is no shame in NOT doing the hardest climbs. The notion that you have to have 'epic amateur rides' or nothing is BULLSH#@. Ride Ride often Enjoy the ride This kind of goal is asking for injury and nothing i'd recommend to a newer cyclist that I was more concerned with their learning to love cycling.

YES it absolutely is. I've "done" this (walked a lot) and it's just as scary coming down. It's so steep you think you're going over the bars every time you hit a tiny pebble. I've done the same on Chimney Bank and it's just as steep but not as long. If you haven't experienced 33% I'd say... don't bother!! lol Not unless you're a fit and experienced cyclist with good prep.
@dtmateo
@dtmateo 5 жыл бұрын
Ok this really tickled my interest. Firstly, that guy doesn’t look anywhere near as fit as me, modesty aside. I do a lot of climbing and ever since I got serious with cycling I have only walked a hill twice. One was a short hill but registered 31% on my GPS and the other one was more than 2Kms where it was so steep that my GPS could not register a gradient reading at all. On the later, the 13% segments almost felt like a false flat. So I looked up hardknott pass and found this veloviewer.com/segments/637403 Is that page wrong then?

@@dtmateo Hi can only give my opinion having done it as part of fred whitton challenge, there are a few videos on you tube of hard knott , but they dont do it justice ,im a averge club rider who done a memorial ride at weekend of 107 mile and 5500feet of climbing.
