Avg. Engagement Time per Session vs Avg. Session Duration in Google Analytics 4 (GA4):
➡️ Average Engagement Time per Session: The length of time that your web page or mobile app was THE FOCUS on a user's screen - meaning that the user was ACTIVELY using your website or mobile app.
➡️ Average Session Duration: The total duration of all engaged sessions (in seconds) divided by the number of sessions

can we define our own session begins and ends? example, session begins when button A is clicked, and ends when button B is clicked

Hey that was so helpful. Thanks. I even have another doubt. Regarding Forms submit event. Is there anyway that WITHOUT using GTM, can we see Form_submit event in GA4 for those forms submission that doesn't have a redirect page (eg. thankyou page), but just a confirmation message on the same page. My GA4 just doesn't refelect it. Please either a video on this can be helpful.

i think it should have been added that avg. session duration does not count the unengaged sessions eg. bounce back or every session where only non-interaction event is happening. how it is calculated with average engagement time per session? 0 engagement sessions are counted? i belive yes as the definition is "The GA4 average session duration is the total duration of all engaged sessions (in seconds) divided by the number of sessions. "

yes. 0 engagement session are counted in no. of sessions. But not considered in the avg. time calculation of engaged sessions as they are bounced.
