Avi is a classically/operatically trained Basso Profundo. He was actually hired by the Las Angeles Opera house 2 days before Scott of the newly forming Pentatonix called him needing a bass. Avi was with the group 6 years but as he said had a complete breakdown from an unbelievable tour schedule and his mother was having a relapse of cancer and he could not get away from the group long enough to visit her. He is very close to his family and all of that just brought him to his knees. When he made his resignation video he literally cried he was so broken. He admits that he had to be much more careful about tour dates and such. He had a great tour 2022. First in Europe, having just completed the recording of a wonderful album, then back to the U.S. where he spent the later part of his tour In the U.S. and Canada and rerecording some of his new album at Sunset Studios owned by Shooter Jennings son of Waylon Jennings and Jessie Coulter He just has to do things at his own pace. His band members say they have never met a more honorable man even under great pressure. I simply call his music, Avi genera. It may be change on the rise, a tender song about a woman being mistreated by a man, (he is very protective of women) great folk music, country and western. my husbands favorite is his son Queen from his album Floating On A Dream. He loves it because it has an Egyptian sound and my husband is a History Professor and loves studying Egypt/Mitsrayim. You gave us a great reaction to Avi and I thank you for it.

Pentatonix isn't the same since Avi Kaplan left. He didn't like the direction they were going. Now he's doing what he likes

I really enjoy Avi's solo music that he does now. His voice really suits more the folk style. He was never really allowed to shine when he was with Pentatonix. And their music does not really suit his style. He is now doing the music he loves & it shows. I really like his "Song For The Thankful".

Pentatonix was a good beginning for Avi but obviously he is much better on his own. His music is very different from what he was doing with the group and I'm glad he has found his voice 🥰

Avi had outgrown PTX, and that is ok. Both are likely better. Avi certainly is. His solo work allows him control and to express his music, which is great for Avi and his fans. My suggestions for next listens would be When I’m a fool from Sunset Studio, First Place I Go, I’ll Get By, and I’m only getting started. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything. The man is an incredible writer and performer. Have fun!

I don't think anybody expects this the first time. I definitely did not. So great. And "We're singin' all day and you can't tame it" is one of the best lyrics ever. That low drum heartbeat is mesmerizing. Two of my favorites are "When I'm a Fool" - specifically the Sunset Sound version - and his duet with Peter Hollens on "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair", which is on Peter's channel.

He pronounces it Ah-vee. Please react to more Avi! I would recommend his original song When I'm a Fool, Sunset Studio version. His lyrics are so impactful and his vocals are impressive to say the least.

There's nothing controversial about saying that Avi needed to leave PTX. We agree! PTX needed a bass guy. Avi needed his freedom. Now PTX is free to do their thing and Avi is free to make the music he was meant to make. This track is from the 'I'll Get By' EP which was followed by 'Song for the Thankful' single then the 'Lean on Me' EP (mostly alt versions from the first EP but still brilliant) and most recently the 'Floating On a Dream' LP. Hard to recommend where to go next because they're all good but judging by your previous comments, you might like 'Born in California'. Subscribed!

Personally, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of Avi’s songs. They’re all so different, and all make you feel something. He is a masterful songwriter, and his voice is just beautiful, whichever register he’s singing in. Love that you’re reacting to his solo music now as well as the PTX music. He’s one-of-a-kind

My favorites of his original work are: I'm Only Getting Started Official video, All is Well live at 7 layers as well as the official video ( two very different videos and I love them both), It Knows Me ( I love the illustrated video that Mertcan Merbileck did for the song but a lot of people don't) , When I'm a Fool live from Sunset Sound Studios, He Don't Love You Right (there's no video) Get Down(no video), Try to Get It Right (no video) . Out of all the work he has done there are only 2 or 3 I don't care for. It's amazing to me that he can be so consistently good. Always ready to listen to and buy his work.

Avi! I love, love, love his music!! I am so glad he went solo. FYI -- your left eye is your "tell." I can see your true reaction by it! lol. I am blown away every time by his "All is Well -- 7 layers Sessions," and his "When I'm a Fool --- Live at Sunset Sound." Those are two of my favorites, but you really can't go wrong with any of his work. His "I'll Get by" became my anthem to help me get through losing three members of my family in a short period of time. His lyrics are so deep (along with his amazing voice), but he also sings with such emotion that you can't help but feel his music.

Avi's solo music is hard to define. This song is his battle song, very tribal. To get a good feel of different sides of Avi's music I suggest All is Well from 7layers session #126 which is just Avi and his guitar in a church in the Netherlands and When I'm a Fool live from Sunset Sound which is with Shooter Jennings ( his producer) and great studio musicians. Yay! You finally got to this! I don't see why this wasn't on the radio, but it has been used in a few shows. If this doesn't make you want to pillage and plunder, then why are you even existing?? Love your reactions! This was Avi’s first “come-back” release to signify the “change” in his direction in music & life. (Change from PTX but back to his roots and soul’s desire) All the suggestions you’ve gotten are great (I love ALL his music) but for something similar to this: The closest songs would be “Get Down” (this is my favorite song live), “the Summit” (audio only) and “I’m only Getting Started” (B&W video is best version IMO). Avi has only recorded two covers (Sweet Adeline is an original), and he’s an amazing singer-songwriter. Can’t wait for you to experience more of his work! 🫶🏻☺️

Avi's music is incredibly powerful. There's an arc in the music he releases, first about his struggles and then as you get to more recent music, his connections. And when he has you emotionally wrapped up in his story, he'll drop a low note that will rattle your soul. Keep listening to the music he released around the time as Change on the Rise - there's a sadness and darkness to it but with strength and hope. Based on your reaction to this song, I think you'll connect with Avi's music.

I love Avi's writing. The seven layer sessions of All Is Well is amazing. Aberdeen is beautiful too. This visceral song is a great workout song too.

You have to react to “The Summit” and “Get Down” for more of this kind of feel. Avi released an album last May entitled “Floating on a Dream” which is wonderful plus the Lean on Me and I’ll Get By EPs. He music is primarily folk with some country influences. Enjoy 💯

To me it has a "tribal" feel to it! I remember watching The Sing Off series and was so happy when Pentatonix won because they were from Texas and I became hooked on A Capella music. That was season 3! Then season 4 Home Free won and they became my favorite! I'm so happy to hear Avi as a solo artist! He has such a rich warm voice!

Avi Kaplan is a huge role model for young bass singers learning their craft. His voice is so, so smooth, so silky, so expressive. He, Geoff and Tim are all highly regarded as extraordinary bass singers and role models, but there’s something about having some operatic training-if you can sing opera you can sing anything, as my old voice teachers used to tell me (I never could sing opera-LOL). This song needs to be an anthem-one of those songs people sing decades from now to motivate themselves and bring people together. Just for fun, you might want to check out Tomi P’s Avi Kaplan Medley. It gives you a little tease of several of Avi’s songs, with some nice surprises at the end and in the comments.

I think Americana is the genre I’d personally associate with Avi’s solo work - love this song so much!

And Yes Avi's work is cinematic by design and very eclectic - a wonderful songwriter, composer and arranger and singer. His lyrics are usually metaphorical. I would suggest 1. "When I'm a Fool" Live at Sunset Sound - it's live in studio with wonderful musicians that are clearly having a great time. 2. "All is Well" Live 7 Layers Session - an acoustic version in a small church in the Netherlands - here he's using his classically trained voice to play with the acoustics in the church. This is my favorite Avi song. Thanks! He is free to do the kind of music he wants to. He has a six octave range. Pentatonix is not the same without his voice. But I am so glad he left.

Avi has a lot of great music. He writes most if not all his own from my understanding. My fav right now is "I am only getting started." it's a good self empowerment without being all up in the feels. When I'm A Fool. Amazing song. I would suggest the live from Sunset Sound recording and video. The album version is quite tasty but the way he let's the musicians go off at Sunset Sound is brilliant!

Very different song from Pentatonix. Avi has really "let his hair down" literally as well as figuratively. Looks great and sounds even better. Have fun listening to Avi's music. He has been playing guitar since high school. "Change On the Rise" is his most famous song and has been used on TV in the USA and in the U.K. on Resident Alien and "First Place I Go" is his newest release and quite good. The thing to remember with Avi is that he is a Californian but not from the city instead from the central valley just outside of Sequoia National Park. A 4 hour drive to either Los Angeles or San Francisco. A park that he has agreed to be one of their 3 celebrity ambassadors for to help raise awareness and money for after the fires.

Cinematic is definitely a good word for this (i think that is a word he has even used to talk about much of the music he writes). That is probably a common thread to a lot of Avi's music even when they style is completely different. I love pretty much everything Avi has done (though some songs caused a more instantaneous love), but for here I will echo requests for "Get Down" for a similar vein; "All is Well: Seven Layer Sessions" for sheer beauty and the simplicity of a man, his guitar, and incredible acoustics; and "When I'm a Fool - Live at Sunset Sound" for a great look at the musicianship of Avi and the people who went into recording the Floating on a Dream album with him. These will definitely give you a taste of his varying styles.

As others have said you cannot go wrong with anything Avi does it is ALL amazing. There are multiple versions of some of his songs Avi likes to play with arrangements and keys. 2 songs from PTX that he leads are Light in the Hallway and Standing By and he has a significant role in Silent Night. It might be my old viking blood due to me being from Scandinavia, but this song just drips of masculinity imo and it makes you just agree to pick up your axe and go into battle.. it just makes you bop your had and punch your chest because the beat just follows the heartbeat. Also.. nice freaking beard (both you and Avi).. my gf made me trim mine yesterday because I went a little scruffy and had to make photos for my passport. :( I always get bromances for other men who looks like me with a beard and long hair. :'D

I agree, I have always thought Avi was a more mature singer....I really think he outgrew the popish vibe of PTX. I love them both, but Avi was always a far more deep personality.

Jared Leto wishes he looked as good with a beard as Avi. Also Avi doesn't seem to be a d-bag (I haven't met him so I can't confirm, have met Leto so can on that end). This song style puts me in mind of solid, deep soul music, combined with - like you mentioned - sort of preparing for battle pump up.
