Avi Shlaim: ‘I have a moral duty to denounce Zionist settler colonialism and American imperialism’

In the Emergency London Conference of Global Intellectuals of Conscience, British-Israeli historian gave a speech on Zionist settler colonialism and American imperialism in Palestine. He concluded his speech by saying that he has the moral duty to denounce Zionist settler colonialism and American imperialism and to stand with the Palestinians for the struggle of peace and dignity in their own land. Professor Avi Shlaim is an Iraqi born Jew who grew up in Israel and taught in Oxford university.

I'm so immensely grateful to have attended Oxford and studied the Middle East and the history of Palestine under Avi Shlaim and his colleagues. I had tutorials with Palestinian scholars and diplomats who had lived in Gaza. I have never been more aware of how privileged I was, to have had a factual and humanitarian education, and to have gone to a university where I could discuss the realities of apartheid and colonialism without fear or censorship. It seems that most American universities provide the opposite experience entirely, where the focus is on propaganda and regurgitating lies rather than true scholarship and moral principles.
