I've been there decades ago on a one way cruise up the inland passage from Vancouver , B.C.. Flew through the Misty Fjords on a sea plane from the dock in Ketchican Harbor & the pilot landed in a mountain top lake , got out & stood on one of the pontoons to eat his lunch . You will love it . It is absolutely gorgeous up there in The Last Frontier .

Aeroworks Productions Disagree. You can come around a corner with more energy than holding still. Plus, a prop will pull up rocks and cause dings in the prop. An expensive practice in the long run

@@angleofattack Like I said a balance of protecting the prop and preserving the usable runway. Was always taught when I learned to fly in Alaska 20 years ago, "There is no such thing as an emergency take off".

Have to agree with AoA. That was a soft field take-off primarily. Keep rolling so the aircraft doesn’t bed in, especially in a tight 180 degree turn. The soft field take-off technique calls for a rolling take-off, adding power as speed increases so as not to kick up stones onto the prop and tail. It’s in the POH to be fair.

@@finneire2358 Which is why Alaska has as many small plane crashes as the rest of the US combined in a single year. There is the POH and there is experience. Tundra tires on fairly hard packed gravel isn't the same as stock tires on grass. Lower 48 pilots don't usually understand AK flying unless you've done it.

Aeroworks Productions Perhaps. But that Quartz Creek field is more Soft Field than Short Field. Isn’t a short field take-off where you climb out at Vx once that speed is reached? Chris and Josh here basically level off in ground effect until 90-odd mph? The known tailwind in the video didn’t help in reducing the ground roll but as Angle of Attack said in the video, he’d rather a tailwind to avail of the greater TODA towards the lake end than a headwind the other direction. A rolling take-off also uses less ground roll than a static start. (Assuming the roll is commenced from a rolling 180 degree turnaround or adjacent taxiway) Adding full power on a static start uses more ground compared to a rolling start not to mention the prop/tail damage. It’s also hard to correlate the stats between AK incident rates and lower 48 ones. It appears, in my opinion, the only thing they could’ve done better in that take-off is delay the backtrack turnaround a bit. Like mentioned.
