Great video. I have a setup very much like this, DIY Ballscrew machine using AvidCNC plug and play electronics and a 5HP spindle. I have found that having one setup for each piece that I make using work offsets works much better than trying to batch cut them. I have G55 XYZ zero setup and pin holes with steel 1/4" pins creating a corner, much like you did with the dog holes and I can sit there and run a part, take it off, add another all day. Since zero on all axis is already setup in G55, I don't have to think about anything except to load the dimensioned lumber. I have different parts setup for G56, G57, G58, etc. It took me a long time and many tries to get the vertical mounting configuration I wanted, but yours looks great right now, you'll find it so useful. Also a 4th rotary axis is a great thing to have if you're a furniture maker.

I really love this nothing for my avid CNC. I went ahead and purchased the dog hole file and I had great luck with it at first. However, after a while, the accuracy was off. Really not sure why but I fixed it by adjusting the dog hole grid. However, now the accuracy is off again by about 1/16 inch to the left. really not sure what’s going on with it. Just figured I would throw it out there to see if anyone else was having the same issue.

Hi jay , Don't you need a horizontal alu profile on the bottom of the vertical spoil board to prevent flex ? If you clamp a piece that not touches the floor and you do a helical or just a drill OP on the top of that piece ,would the pressure on the piece tilt the end of that piece and so cause a little flex on the bottom of the vertical board. Even if the pressure is not that big on the top.

Great video Jay. I'm looking into getting an AVID CNC and noticed in most of the videos people use MDF for the top. Few like yourself are putting in the track systems, but you are putting in more track than I've seen. There are a few that leave one end of the table with several rows of T-slot or 80/20 bars and the rest MDF. What are the advantages of your design? What does the vertical table provide you with?

Great Setup and really makes me think of what can be achieved with the dog holes and the vertical table. But I have a question, when doing the vertical table why did you not after getting the x axis cross bar and z axis legs square, locate the uncut mdf to the cross bar and legs using dowels/coach bolts then use the CNC to cut the top face square, once this was square remove locate against your dogs on the table and you could then cut the other 3 sides square and cut the remainder of the holes for angles etc. Then simple replace on the vertical face relocating with the dowels.
@JayBates
@JayBates 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a complicated way to get to the same result. I used the machine to cut the perimeter of the vertical table while cutting the dog holes. This means the holes are perfectly perpendicular to the top of the table. Then just mount it to the aluminum with the top of the table touching the bottom of whatever is in the spindle. Verify the height by putting the spindle on the far left and far right ends while securing the table.

Hey Jay, I'm a brand new AVID Pro CNC owner and I'm at the "Let's make a spoil -board set-up" phase. I really like your setup. So here is a beginner, silly question. Where you attach the two stacked MDF boards between each track, why do you glue it all together. In my mind, gluing the two thinner pieces together makes sense, but then, why not attach those to your full sheet with screws from underneath? Then, if you need to change out the top portion, you could remove one section and replace? I'm certain there is a good explanation that I, as a beginner, don't see. And I have another question. Since you ended up adding legs to help support your vertical table, would you see any benefit to pushing the entire vertical surface closer to the front of the machine, thusly giving you more horizontal surface nearer to the front as well. I want to add a vertical surface but I'm not liking how much of the front of the table horizontal surface you lose. Anyways, thanks for the great videos. Gary
@JayBates
@JayBates Жыл бұрын
Regarding the spoilboard, never remove it. When you get close to replacing it, mill it flat and glue on another layer. There is never a need to remove the spoil board top layer. I don't like to leave screws in the spoil board so I don't accigdentally hit one with the bit.

Do you have a way to set a repeatable depth (height) stop on the verticle table?
@JayBates
@JayBates 4 жыл бұрын
Picture a piece of 3/4" plywood that is 49" long x 12" tall. Mill it on the CNC so that it looks like a wide, short U shape. The left and right ends of the U are in the 12" direction and about 2" wide. In the middle of each end of the U are a vertical slot about 11" long. The slots can be used with bolts and star knobs in the lower T-track with the bottom of the U shape spanning the entire width of the table to act as a shelf or a stop to repeat locate items vertically. With the plywood in the U shape the slots will allow it to go down close to the ground for longer stuff. For shorter stuff the entire piece can be flipped so the U shape becomes a n shape with the support on top. Hope that makes sense.

I really don't understand these kinds of comments. It's all a matter of perspective or opinion. I wouldn't spend $3000 on a hydraulic car lift but I know a lot of auto enthusiasts who have them in their personal shops. Who cares how other people spend their money?
@saintb6969
@saintb6969 4 жыл бұрын
@@JayBates Easy to understand, $3000 for an entire piece of equipment is one thing, but to spend that much on an accessory is another. However in the end it is up to the individual to decide what is right for them, all I am trying to say is perhaps some of these companies that sponsor You tube content creators by throwing free stuff at you like its candy and then expect all of us to run out and lay down hard earn money needs to re-think who exactly is the consumer here. Its one thing to get something for free, another to have to open the wallet to get it. I have a shop full of all kinds of cool tools that I have bought with my hard earned dollars, and some of which I had to save for years to get, or piece mill it together. That much money just to hold something down in my opinion can be well spent else where. This coming from someone with 3 CNC machines and years of experience clamping stuff down. Of course I do not blame you in anyway, you have found a way to do what you love and get paid for it which is awesome.

Great job as always. I'm even more excited to get my own machine. Thanks for sharing all this info. One question, would it work to glue up the MDF "strips" prior to installing them? Also, there is a nail gun that shoots ceramic fasteners, which won't harm the bits if they contact them. What do you think of this for a longterm investment?
@JayBates
@JayBates 4 жыл бұрын
I think the nail gun you mentioned is a great solution for certain situations, like full sheets of plywood without a vac table. I'll probably buy one soon. As far as the MDF, it would have been a LOT easier to glue 3 sheets of plywood together and "clamp" them down with screws while the glue dried. Then use the CNC to cut the slots for the track, holes for the track bolts, and dog holes. But I didn't think it through that much when making it. That would have saved a ton of back and forth time clamping the strips down.

Another way to do the tenons and mortise is to lift the wood piece slightly off the table and then use a 90degree head aggregate that attaches to your spindle. Here is the video of that setup. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fsBidtNzqrvbd6s.html

Jay, thank you for your videos and your knowledge. One piece of constructive feedback: you tend to be very long-winded and rambling in your dialog and explanations. When I see a Jay Bates video that is 32 mins long I cringe and wonder if I should watch, because I know there's probably 6-8 minutes of super-useful info and visuals and the rest is talking talking talking talking on and on. Not trying to throw shade, just offering some feedback to make your videos even better. All the best!

I don't think a CNC table makes a huge amount of sense if you don't have a vacuum hold down table. A vast majority of users cut sheet goods and this dog set up is useless for the majority of applications
