For the price, 805 D4s are wonderful. That diamond tweeter opens up a whole different world of detail. 805 D4s pretty much set the standard for stand-mount speakers.

Totally agree. Much prefer the 805D4 to the usual competition from Wilson, Magico etc. Having said that, this Avid speaker certainly looks the business. Will be keen to listen to a pair. Always love british loudspeakers.

THANKS TERRY 🤗 ,for your review of these …but for my personal experience I would stick to the 805’s ,because of the diamond tweeter and the fact that they have lasted so long for me in my 802 D2’s ,not to mention the looks and price 💷 ,…which would not make a difference in itself , but this is just my opinion 🤔💚💚💚

To my ears, vocals also sound very nice with paper or polypropylene based woofer cones and crossover point above 3 kHz. Better yet maybe: no crossover. Is there any chance you will review products from Cube Audio? They have full range drivers that are apparently really full range.

Really good review Terry. Just looking at your in-room frequency response in an acoustically treated room that you still get more than 20dB difference in sound level across the frequency range. Admittedly mainly in the lower frequencies. Is this what you expect? The specs show +/-3dB 43-20k.
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
That is a great question because there is a big difference between a manufacturer spec says and what you get from a speaker in a room for bass. I have measured over a hundred speakers and subwoofers in that many room and this kind of response or worse is what you always get because the room dominates. So when people say my speaker does X because this is what the spec sheet says they are not seeing the bigger picture and I wished more people like me reviewers etc showed their room responses because it would educate more people. What people think they are listening to and the reality is always shockingly different,. Whats also interesting is what you cant see from this graph and that is the bass decay time, the treatment lowers the decay time a lot. In fact because of how human hearing works a lot of bass especially at deeper frequencies is better and because it decays fas in my room I can get away with having more of it. I talk about this all the time, my room likes more bass than it should for its typical size because of the treatment allows me to have it. There is no bass boom at all where I sit and you think it would be horrendoud from that graph. The graph is showing the overall behaviour of the speaker in my listening area so its a little different but more truthful I think. The no boom is also partly because most speakers dont really have much output where the room is boosting the most 30hz ish. And most music doesn't have much content there either so you dont hear it like the graph shows you. When it is there because the bass weaves are so large its ok in my room but my front door really rattles as that is how far the bass is travelling due to the size of the wave being created. However if I engage the RELs then you start getting more boom at certain frequencies. Before I had all this treatment and understanding I real issues getting good sound in this room. That is what started me on the path to learning all about it. The room still sucks really but they generally all do :)

@@PursuitPerfectSystem great reply Terry. I just invested in the Umik-1 and a play with REW. I was initially shocked with the 20dB dips and peaks using ATC active 50s. The measurements allowed me to dial my REL S1 in. Decay 60 around 400ms for my classical music preference was pleasing to see. I really appreciate how much there is to room acoustics!
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
Yeah 400ms is good and its great your looking into it. REW is brutal on the audiophile though and it can make you obsess over graphs. Be careful of that because its a dark path that doesn't guarantee the results you expect. Well it didnt for me but that could be for a number of reasons. I have done experiments using Dirac to make REW graphs look good and I was not doing the listening so could not be biased. The Dirac target had to be really weird to make the REW graph look pretty and it didnt sound good by all accounts which is no surprise but also very encouraging me for and what I do :)

Interesting, hadn't heard of these at all. I like the design philosophy. I just bought the Dynaudio Confidence C20. I listened to the 805 D4 and about 8 other pairs of speakers over the last 3-4 months. The only one to get seriously shortlisted too was the Marten Duke 2. Ended up getting the Dynaudio for more or less the price of the Dukes :) p.s as you might guess I’m really not a fan of the way that bowers voice their speakers. Too harsh for me.

For ten grand and one of the largest footprints of most speakers, no midrange, and additional cost for sufficient stands, which is not acknowledged here, these speakers are for very few music listeners when it comes to value gains performance. And I have to say, in 2023, it’s hard to take any review seriously when, (it is still an absolute fact that CD/SACD playback far exceeds the sonic capabilities of vinyl), reviewers don’t even use them in their comparison!! I’d be embarrassed to honest as I grew up in the sixties spinning vinyl on the likes of Linn, B&O & VPI tables. Tonearm colorations and phono stage processing significantly color program material against what I’ve heard live and during CD,DSD and Stereo SACD playback. Andrew Robinson is another who doesn’t even own CD’s and snubs those who do listen. John Darko and Steve Gutenberg have both revisited listening to CD’s because as Darko said, they just sound better than streaming, and Steve said through his Luxman Player, the sound was sublime. This highly expensive medium that is vinyl, not to mention wasteful… is based purely on nostalgia and the need to “see” what you paid for as opposed to what is more accurate sonically. I now I’ll get pushback here but I’m an old bird who’s been in Video Production for many years and my skin is thickened by what I know is fact. Used LP’s are far more expensive than Discs, and new ones are 30-50 bucks a pop. And with every play, the vinyl is degraded ever so much, even with those $2000-7000 Cartridge/Stylus. I owned a pair of AVIDs years ago, towers that had five drivers, three tweeters, one in front and in each side, with a woofer and midrange. Fine speakers that had a great sound and checked all the boxes. Still not sure how these sound “different” as the title suggested…

Avid tuned the speaker for vinyl, I would have assumed.
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
I asked them about that and they said they tuned them with varied sources to sound just the best they can get them, no real design agenda. They designed them technically aesthetically and then computer modelled the crossover and then did the rest by ear . One would assume vinyl was important for their listening testing given they make just a few turntables

No Specific reason, I did go and see them a few years ago with a view to doing some work with them but it never happened. Some companies are very slow to embrace the KZfaq scene,. That is changing it seems but this is an industry with a lot of people who have worked in it for a very long time. They all know each other and naturally work a certain way. People like me regardless of what I do sometimes get overlooked. Its very frustrating but I accept it as part of it and there are lots of great companies keeping me busy so i cannot complain.

Looks like a Morel tweeter and so it’s likely a Morel mid/bass. Also, looking at the frequency sweep I would suggest the crossover point is a touch too low and the port could also do with a bit more tuning.

Thats an in room response you cant judge the port from that as the bass is all room dictated

@@PursuitPerfectSystem, Avid’s claims for their drive unit clamping system are nonsense. I’m not saying there can’t be a benefit from such an arrangement but it’s nothing to do with isolating the drivers from the cabinet (which is how you described it). The clamps don’t provide any more isolation that just bolting the driver to the baffle (that much is basic engineering).
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
As I said in the video I cant test that, I will take their word for it as I dont see why they would do it otherwise as it adds a lot of cost. After listening to a lot of speakers where you very much hear the cabinet you dont with these to a large degree which I dare say is the combination of quite a few things, I say some I am sure is the TMT system. Its also possible I didn't explain the design 100% correctly too its been school holidays so I had to shoot this one at 11pm at night when the house quietened down. I was not coffee fuelled up like normally am as I normally shoot in the mornings

Hi Terry, May I ask your honest opinion about music servers. I find the hardware in most high end streamers underwhelming. Ofcourse is the PSU the most important to any great source. Do you feel a Music server pc with good cards and marvellous PSU will be a better value versus most high end streamers? If you feel more comfortable to speak about this by email I can send you one :)

@Sebastian-gc2hc
@Sebastian-gc2hc Жыл бұрын
Terry it's definitely not a pass and it's not clipping what makes a problem. Such a high caliber reviewer as yourself should always check quality on headphones not ipad. You have overcooked it this time. Meaning that there are artifacts in your voice especially when you pronounce consonants. I thought that your mic was too close or preamp was set louder. Next time just make it more natural sounding meaning that only very quite breathing should be heard but never loud lips smacking. You are not talking to ladies ear on the date Terry but audience behind camera. Take care and sorry for critics but sometimes someone must do it so we become better

I mastered the video using Mark Levinson 5909 on a wire from a MAC Studio so tested the sound on a good setup. These are headphones on review but they are clearer sounding than the apple airpods max I have been using so I adjusted my sound work flow accordingly (adjusted the bass slightly). Once the video is uploaded I test it on phone speakers because that is the worst source a person will use to watch the video so its the minimum quality standard sound check. To be honest I have been doing the same thing for sound for months now, I do apply a slight mid and treble lift to help produce a clearer vocal from my deep voice. I did not change that process so I dont know what happened here thats different. Mic is the same pre amp same same level same but feedback taken on board thanks for coming back to me it helps.
