Avid S1: Mix Big with a Slimline Control Surface

Avid’s reputation in the professional audio world is well known and their new S1 slimline control surface will appeal to a wider range of audio workflows and budgets. Together with their free Avid Control app for iPad or Android tablets, the S1 borrows features from its high-end consoles and bigger S6 sibling. Avid’s S1 provides hands-on control for a variety of audio and video software through any EUCON compatible software.
Drew Parsons from Avid sat down and gave Noisegate a look at the new S1.

You would win the major award of the year if you did an in-depth explanation of EuCon setup for the S1 and explanation of the top row of buttons and knobs. I can't get my inserts to stop popping up when I touch anything on my S1 and it's driving me bonkers.

I own a dock and an S1 - they’re large - you need a deep desk - AND use Ethernet connections to your tablet - rather than Wi-Fi, if you want useable meter ballistics.

Controlling plugin parameters, how does it work with 3 party plugin's like Waves SSL for example... Will I be able to map the parameters to the knobs? Or are they as least mapped in a logical way? Or will it be just like scrolling through endless parameters, like on the Artist Mix? Hope I make sense? Thank you. 🙏

Yes, you can actually create a custom map of parameters for any 3rd party plugin laid across 8 encoders 1x8 (or if you have avid dock, the 2x4 knobs on the sides)

Does the S1 send out a wifi signal? How does that work if I need my computer to be connected to the internet to access my ilok for pro tools?

Your computer can be connected via wifi, but the s1 needs to be connected to the router via ethernet

It’s a 3rd Gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro but it’s not the best fit. For a perfect fit and less money try the 1st or 2nd Gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Wider boarders provide your perfect fit.

Where in the heck is the master fader? Also, how many units can you daisy-chain together, say if you want 24 or 48 faders?

@@st0rmchild - that's the one I went with. It's a good size. I am pleasantly surprised that the angle, with the 11" iPad Pro in place, lines up perfectly to the bottom of my iMac screen. I love it when the details come together.

It’s a 3rd Gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro. An 11 is noticeably smaller.

BigMacBook1300 YES your 4th generation iPad Pro (2020) works with S1 or Dock just as the prior 3 iPad Pros do.

Richard Williams his iPad connects via WiFi therefore yes. The S1 connects via Ethernet.

the one thing that you don't show is how to adjust your plugins on the channels . You need to show how one can use it as a console .

It can't! S1, is just as terrible for plugin control, as the Artist Mix. That's why in every review, they seems to skip that part... Though, rumor has it, that AVID might be releasing some degree, of manual plugin parameter mapping, within the next update. That might be a game changer. Finger's crossed! 🙂
