In March 2021 Aviva officially announced that the company aims to achieve Net Zero by 2040. The first milestone on that journey is a 25% reduction in carbon intensity of assets by 2025.
As part of that goal, Aviva tech division launched a project to reduce their cloud footprint, starting by improving the observability of their systems to identify compute waste and performance improvement opportunities.
At Datadog Summit London 2024, Leo Earl, Cloud Optimization specialist at Aviva, explained how they were able to reduce 250K EC2 instance launches in a year, and the impact this had on their energy consumption, their cloud costs, and their security posture.
