Thank you Laura, you have such a lovely way of sharing information, I would be curious to see what you make with your dyed fabrics. I have been natural dyeing for about 8 years. I dye wool and cotton both fabrics and yarns. I am a weaver so love to use my naturally dyed yarns, I always feel unenthusiastic about using commercially dyed materials due to the environmental impact and also, I just love natural colours so much more. I am tempted to play with the fugitive dyes again this year because they are so pretty and accessible but they definitely are only temporary - black bean and cabbage are just too pretty to resist😊 I am saving my avocado skins and pits but dyeing with these is always a challenge due to my acidic well water. Avocado seems to really,like an alkaline dye bath so I have to adjust it by adding soda ash. I never know if it will be a successful dye bath because sometimes the colour just won’t stay and rinses off immediately. I am really. Looking forward to trying soy milk as a binder now, you have inspired me, thank you so much. I hope you are having a lovely 2021 and thank you for the sweet gentle videos.

Thank you so much Lynn, you are very kind 💚 I'm incredibly happy to hear that my videos inspire you, it gives me the energy to continue to create them. right now I'm not doing anything in particular with the fabric I dyed, I'm experimenting with different dyestuff, so I prefer to dye small pieces of fabric, but I'm working on a video where I will dye a t-shirt and different cotton bags ( in the future I would love to buy a sewing machine to make my own clothes from the fabric I dye) I'm very lucky because my tap water is neutral, if your water is acidic you can try to use rain water, Of course, I live in England so we have in abundance, but you can still try to put a container outside to catch rainwater especially now that we are in spring. You are absolutely right about fugitive colours like red cabbage and black beans, they are impossible to resist, especially red cabbage, I love to change the colour with baking soda and lemon juice. Hi, I used your instructions for using soy milk as mordant and already dyed a pair of linen pants with the avocado skins. I love the color 😍. Thank you so much for your videos they really helped me. I still have a question though how many weeks do you suggest I wait until I can wash the pants? I would like to start wearing them but they smell very plant-like.

Hi, that's great!! 💚 Two week should be fine, remember to wash it with natural soap, because natural colour may shift colour with different PH 🌿

This color is so pretty and warm. If you wanted to use two different natural colors, would you mix them or do one first and then dye over it? For example, if you wanted to add a touch of blue to this color, would you do a light indigo after dying with avo or mix them?

Hi Christine Thank you so much, it really is a pretty warm colour. If you want to mix two colours to obtain more hues, is better to dye first one colour and then mordant the fabric again and dye with the other colour. We mordant again because all the mordant that we use is already attached to the first dye. If you want to use indigo, you are right, first, you do a light indigo dye and then mordant and dye the fabric again with the other colour. If better to do the indigo bath first because if you do the opposite way the high Ph of the vat can damage the bond created on the previous dye. Hi, Thank you so much, yes it's a nice colour. 🤗 After washing the fabric several times in the washing machine the colour will shift from a strong reddish pink to blush pink. Have a nice day!

Hi! yes you can do it with shoes that are made with natural fabric, like converse and vans... but take into consideration that the glue in some shoes may get damaged when applying a lot of heat. so try to keep the temperature of the water low ( not boiling) Thanks 😊

Grazie mille 💚 se si prepara il tessuto con la tecnica del latte di soia il colore non si perde, perché si lega alla fibra; in lavatrice si consiglia comunque fare un lavaggio non molto aggressivo 💚😊 grazie mille di nuovo!!

Want to start hand block printing on natural dyed fabric ...pls see videos of kalamkari paiting on fabric which is done from ancient times in soth india . Google for kalamkari painting from sri kalahasti .you will love it .its still done with all natural dyes ..i go and watch this dyeing process n hope that this art form never goes away .just sharing

Hi 😍 I will love one day to visit India, it is a beautiful country with such a rich and diverse natural dye tradition; is a dream of mine to attend a hand-block printing workshop. Also thank you so much for introducing me to Kalamkari painting, is such a fascinating technique, and the designs are so intricate. I have used pits but never the peels. Can you freeze them until you accumulate enough? A friend gives me his pots and I keep them in the freezer

Hello Sandi, Yes you can also use the peels from the avocado, they will give you the same colour. You can freeze them until you are ready to use them. My advice is to clean the peels before freezing them to remove all the avocado flesh, which will make the dye brownish. 😊

Hi Cristina, I left the avocado on fire for 2 hours, but you can simmer them for 1 hour and let the soak overnight ( without the fire) you will get a stronger colour this way ( and also reduce the gas consumption) Thanks 😊

Hi, the colour does not wash out when you wash it later, it may change a little bit depending on the detergent that you use, I recommend using a neutral one ( like the one for sensitive skin) yes, you can use your tap water. The PH of your water may change the outcome; I suggest putting a teaspoon of soda ash ( or baking powder) to get a richer pink. 😊 have a nice day!

Hi :) I think the trick is to move the fabric when you are dying and keeping the temperature low, but even like that sometimes I get uneven fabric 😥 is a matter of patience and acceptance.

I've tried twice already and I can't seem to achieve a red colour for the dye water, could that be because I use a different avocado? I did use the colour even if it wasn't the colour I wanted just because at least avocado has tannins, so I could redye another colour on top.

I don't think is because of the avocado, I have use different types of avocados (even in different countries) and I always get a reddish or pink colour; have you tried the PH of you water? Have you remove all the fruit before dyeing and extract the colour at low temperature? Sorry for making so many questions 😋 I would like to understand, to see if we can resolve the issue.

You can also use the whole seed of the avocado to dye, It will give you the same colour as when dyeing with avocado skin. You can follow the same process: instead of the avocado skins you use the seeds ( or you can mix them if you want) 💚

Can you actually wash the dyed fabric at 60° in the washing machine? I was imagining making a baby quilt but the quilt needs to be washable at 60°

Hi Lena, I always recommend washing naturally dyed fabric by hand with a neutral detergent; doing this will prolong the life of the textile and the dye. I will recommend you do some tests on small pieces of fabric to see how the textile and dye react to the washing machine cycle. 💚 And if you are happy with the result proceed to make the baby quilt, it sounds like a lovely project to make. Hi :) Yes, you can mix in the dyeing pot avocado skin with other vegs, most of the time it would give you a dark brown colour. If you want to play with different colour mixes, I recommend dyeing the fabric first with avocado skin and then re-dye the fabric again with another dyestuff. 💚

Ciao -😊 Normalmente uso il 50% del peso del tessuto secco. Per esempio, se il tessuto pesa 100 g, uso 50 g di bucce di avocado. Per ottenere un colore più forte puoi usare anche il 100% del peso del tessuto (questo è conosciuto in inglese come WOF, Weight of the Fabric).

Yes, avocado skins and seeds will give a richer colour when you leave them to soak for 24 hours, also in avocado the colour needs this time to oxidate, you will notice that the colour will change from a brown into more reddish colour when you let it rest for one day. 💚
