I am a commercial Avocado grower in Southern California, a couple of observations. That tree was definitely in poor shape, it had not been watered for some time, leafs were droopy. Ground should have been moist as well, otherwise the dry soil will take all moisture away from tree. Clay soul not the best soil to plant Avocados in to as they retain the moisture too long, and may cause Phitophera (root Rot) something Avocados are highly prone to getting. Definitely apply sun block, but don't apply to leafs, as this will inhibit photosynthesis. Also don't make a barrier to hold water against trunk, its best if you water slowly, small amounts and frequently, but allow soil to get dry so roots can take in oxygen, between irrigation. Otherwise interesting video.

@Salvador Dominguez What is the best way to grow an avocado tree in Zone 7b? Do I need a greenhouse?
@salvadordominguez5925
@salvadordominguez5925 5 жыл бұрын
@@rd4469 Avocados are native to the Southern part of Mexico and Honduras. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 30* Fahrenheit, but much lower than that they will be damages. Lower than 27* for a few hours will kill it. So a Hothouse would be the only option. Hass likes to take up space, GEM is more upright and a smaller highly productive tree. Not sure if they are available to general public. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the most important tip for planting an avocado tree. I learnt it the hard way by losing an excellent plant! The top of the soil that the plant comes with must never be inserted beneath the surrounding soil or the plant will die! Now I usually leave about an inch above when planting to compensate for eventual settling in the hole.

Hello Benjamin de la Rosa, Thank you so much for the compliment! And you are sounding like a professional, already! Planting your tree "about an inch above when planting to compensate for eventual settling in the hole" is excellent advise. I've always whitewashed my fruit trees in So. Cal., but have always refrained from using brown paint because some say only diluted flat latex is safe. Brown would be so much more attractive. Also, I've lost several trees to rodents gnawing bark from the trunk. I'm excited to try this product and just ordered some online.

Ryan Issa Morning. They did very well last year. I followed your planting advice, and coated them well with your sunscreen product. They thrived until late May of this year. My bacon made it through, unfortunately my Haas didn’t do well. It was decimated by a June bug infestation.They basically ate all the leaves off it. I’m hoping it recovers in the fall. The branches although leafless, are still flexible. I have a shade cloth structure over it to protect it. Hopefully I won’t have to replace it. :( I do appreciate your channel. Thank you for reaching out. Here’s hoping my young Hass will thrive once again 👍 :)

Hey Charles, today I received my second order of IV Organic 3 in 1. My first can is white and after I bought it my husband said he would prefer brown or green on our young avocado tree. So I got the green but after applying it to the avocado trunk I'm wishing I bought the brown. Oh well. Regardless, I'm excited to have it protected from our S. Florida summer sun. I also used it on a few other things like passion fruit, and a couple of grafting projects. I'll probably use the white for a leaf spray. I appreciate your advice! :)

Although clay retains nutrients well - once that soil is spent it is virutally impossible to get nutrients back into it. Keep in mind there are parts of California with Mammals, even dinosaurs, buried in thick clay that are still preserved to the point of where you can cook thier meat. I'd be interested to see another tree planted along side with no added soil supplements.

I have a young avocado tree growing in a pot in my window. I started it from the pit of one of the best tasting haas avocado's I've ever eaten. Why do I have to graft - I mean why wouldn't this bear fruit one day? Also, my tree is bent towards the morning sun -- should I rotate the pot each day so the tree naturally grows straighter? Or give it a support rod? I never thought about sunburn until I watched your video and would rotating the pot be a good idea to prevent that, until it's large enough to go out in the yard?

Hello Xiaofei Shi, Thank you so much for the compliment! :-) IV Organic will help keep your plants cooler during the hottest summer days, and has 7 natural oils that will help repel most insects, too! Our company has shipped many orders to Australia. Instead of the $5 shipping & handling charges for shipments in USA, we charge a flat rate of $22.50 for shipping (no handling charges) to customers in Australia. Another organic product that I love to use is Neem oil if you are struggling to control pests; however, the risk of adding oil, especially on hot days, is risk of further sunburn to leaves and branches. I hope this helps! :-) Charles

If you use organic fertilizers, you will get a diversity of elements into the soil, while improving the soil structure; compared to chemical fertilizers. The top 3 most important nutrients for plants are Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. The other micro nutrients avocado need in much smaller quantities are: Boron, Zinc, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur, Manganese. Keep me posted on your project! :) Charles

First, please water the poor tree! Second, Take all of your mixed dirt out of the hole. Next use a drill with a long auger bit and drill as many holes as you can into the bottom of the hole. If lucky you may hit a different layer of soil that will aid with drainage. Now fill the hole with mixed dirt all the way to the top. Take the tree out of the pot and set it on top of the hole. Mound dirt around the tree. After watering the tree may sink a few inches but will still be above ground level. Planting an avocado the same way as a rose bush cost me several trees due to root rot.

Gary's Best Gardening would be cringing like mad if he saw this video. Compost is not the home of roots...."soil amendments should go on top of the soil." Many things: I have never heard CA has mostly clay soil. I am sure it varies widely. Here in Pasadena my soil is almost pure sand. Avocados need excellent drainage and therefore sandy soil is actually a benefit as long as you water enough. I have walked through avocado groves in Fallbrook and put my hands in the soil.....super sandy and loose! I really think this video should be updated or taken down. I spent two years growing avocados trees using bad advice (like this video), and my trees died or almost died. Now I am doing it right and they thrive. Sorry be so critical, but avocados are not easy to grow and I hate for others to fail because the information they received was not accurate.

My thoughts exactly. This guy is on one of Gary’s lecture videos from Laguna Hills nursery selling his needless product. They need to get on the same page since Gary says decaying matter should only be placed on top in the form of compost and mulch. He pretty much did everything incorrectly. My avocado trees are thriving and I followed none of the advice given here.

IV Organic None at the moment. I'm doing a cold stratification on apples, pears and peaches right now. If I don't get out of my rental property by the end of summer I'll be putting some in the ground for the home owner to keep. I'm hoping to find a house and start their the more property I can locate the more fruit trees I'll be growing. I also plan to grow Paw Paw and Mulberry as well as a big list of berries. I've got an indoor lemon tree doing amazing and I'm going to start another avocado in my compost this time. Last time suspended in water it never sprouted.

You could try "Lamb Hass" Avocado. They are very similar to Hass avocados only a much, much smaller tree. If you have a sunny area in your house that you can fiddle with the temps and humidity they will suit you fine.

Hello Charles! I have a couple questions for you. I tried scrolling down to read the previous posts and didn't see my questions, sorry if it's a repeat! I am curious about the spray bit. You painted on the trunk but sprayed the tree leaves. 1) could you skip "painting" the trunk and just spray the hell out of it with the same leaf spray stuff? I went online to look at the two products and they read fairly similar. Just curious if I could use the spray only. I just picked up a Hass from the local gardening store and I do not see any browning. So I am wondering if I could just be lazy at this point, on a preventive measure. 2) If I am not able to pot it in the ground until I am able to move (a couple of years from now), What would you recommend for dirt/fertilizer and that it will be well drained? I have Perlite and basic potting soils, but I am just curious about the combination for potted soil. Thank you so much!! I just stumbled upon your account. Very to the point and well executed; I subscribed!

Fantastic Video. Many thanks for posting. Do you have any suggestions for leaf tip browning for Gem or Lambs Hass avocados. I have read that the high chlorine levels of the Los Angeles area water is potentially a cause. Do you have any thoughts on this.

Darn hard dirt. Took me an hour to barely do a whole big enough for my avocado. I live east of downtown LA. The digging destroyed me. Now time to recover.

Try applying Gypsum to the hard soil I've heard this helps plants establish roots in hard soils.

It’s still in a pot and I’m in Florida I have been allowing the plant to adjust to full sun in the pot before planting since it was shaded in a nursery

hi, thanks for the presentation. am fro Uganda in East Africa... this will go a long way in helping us grow organic. however, if we use composte alone. is it enough. how about the slurry from bio gas digesters. thank you
@IVOrganic

Hello John Doe, Great to hear from you all the way from East Africa!!! :-) Bio-slurry is an excellent soil conditioner, adds humus, provides plants with both macro and micro nutrients, and enhances the soil’s capacity to retain water. If the bio-slurry is properly prepared, such that the fermentation process kills all disease and pathogens, the product is a safe organic alternative for plants. Let me know if you have any other questions! Charles

Hello Charles, I have viewed many of your videos and find your knowledge and enthusiasm for gardening to be infectious. On your video for planting the avocado tree, you mention feeing with an organic fertilizer and spraying with a diluted Organic IV spray, but you do not mention anything about foliar feeding with a compost tea. At what point would you use foliar feeding? Do avocado trees respond well to foliar feeding? How does foliar feeding work in conjunction with an Organic IV sunburn spray?

Need some advice I planted a avocado seed and didnt think was going to grow but did I let it grow for maybe 4 to 5 months was very healthy almost 2 feet long.. but it was in a spot I knew had to be moved so one day i dug around it and got it out having to cut some roots that were going pretty deep down but still the seed was still there and some roots so I stuck in a new location and now a week later my poor tree went from being so healthy now looking like its dying... I know It can be normal but now leaves are completely dry and I'm worried because at very top its turning black the tip of the tree but the trunk still is firm but dont want the black to spread should I cut it or just leave it alone??? Thanks for any tips appreciate it

Awesome video! IV Organic, i have a nice little backyard and was contemplating planting a date palm tree and a fig tree, could you please give me some guidance? Second question: what are some nice other fruit trees ( or veggies) would recommend planting? I live in Atlanta.

Hello Awa, Thank you for the compliment! :-) And I am glad you are planting what are considered to be tropical-looking plants that will look gorgeous in your landscape and provide you and your friends and family with excellent quality organic foods for many years! With dates, there are male and female trees... so you will need to purchase 2 trees for successful pollination! With regards to the fig, there are some varieties that will want to grow 20+ feet, and other varieties that will only grow to about 10 feet. All fig varieties can be (and should be) managed with pruning.. but you should be selective in how much work you want to invest in pruning and if your garden would look best with a larger or smaller frame tree. Some suggestions to consider adding to your garden is a Eureka lemon tree (lemons are great for your health and can be used for marinades, salad dressings and of course, lemonade). Must do veggies are tomatoes and zucchinis. Keep me posted on your growing successes!!! :-) Charles

Hi Charles, I'm planting a tree up in inland Northern Cali. It will be close to a house and I'll cover it if freezing temps are in the forecast. Like you, we have hard clay soils. Everything I've read online seems to suggest these trees need to be planted in a mound with clay soil as the tap root will get root rot. In this video you don't supplement the soil with cactus soil, sand or anything to amend the native soil. In fact you plant at ground level. What gives, are these other videos being overly cautious?
