Heavy periods are common during peri-menopause, but what do you do if you think your period is too heavy?
I get many women contacting me regularly with this worry, so this week on A.Vogel Talks Menopause I thought I would take a look at why heavy periods are common at this time, how heavy is considered too heavy and when you should consult your doctor if you are worried about your periods.

Hey...🎀 thank you for this upload today. I really appreciate this information. I am in group 3 and I never go to the Drs. But I went to ask for blood tests for vit.deficiencies as ive had fatigue and anxiety and wanted to treat myself with supplements. A day and a half later the Drs called me to make an appointment for the next day. And this threw me into absolute panic. And yesterday I had an appointment through for a pelvic scan. Which freaked me out again. Basically all you have told me is what I wanted to hear from the Dr. I am treating the anemia with Spatone which is so gentle on my tum and I also drink Beetroot, pineapple, apple, lime fresh juice every day... and eat dried apricots as im a veggie. Your clear information has stopped my worry, so I really appreciate this. ♡ Ladies, listen to your body, hormones are amazing... they bring life into this world.. dont be scared of them.. help yourself by losing weight, eating organic home prepped foods rich in veggies... doing exercise and meditating... I take full responsibilty for my health... and will try anything to feel brand new 😁💖🌞 Our bodies arent against us... just merely giving us feedback to look after ourselves ✔🎀🎉🍇🍍🍓🍆🌻🌼🌳 x Thanks again

Thank you for this. I am in the 3rd category and have been bleeding almost continually since May with the odd week or 10 days stoppage. My gp sent me for internal Scan and revealed no problems. Put me on iron and my bp is high. Recently been suffering high anxiety and depression. Was given progesterone tablets to take with no instruction when to stop. Saw locum gp who told me to stop and see what happened. Well 2 days after stopping I’m standing in the shower because that’s how much blood I’m Losing 😪. My gps are all male. I’m going back to gp this week to get a referral to gynaecologist. No one prepared me for this stage in my life! I had to come to you tube to get things explained by lovely people like yourself thank you x

Hello thank you for asking. My bleeding finally started to regulate after I had about 10 days on progesterone. I had a complete mental health breakdown soon after I posted this. I think my body had had enough physically and mentally. The anaemia, bleeding lack of sleep and anxiety came all together and really made me ill. The good news is I am now a lot better! Mentally and physically better after taking time off work and looking after myself x

I too am experiencing very heavy bleeding where I have had to wear adult diapers because I bled too much. I had gone to my doctor and everything checked out okay. I was given progesterone pills but I didn't take them because I thought progesterone causes cancer...now I am thinking of going back and getting the prescription. These heavy flows are horrible and I have been in the shower just like you...bleeding and bleeding.

You have just explained me perfectly. Estrogen dominance being the cause of this . I take nascent iodine to rid my body of excess estrogen and it also nourishes breast uterus ovaries and prevents excess estrogen from forming cysts or cancer to grow. Bio identical progesterone from dr John r lee . Check out his books also. Dim and calcium d glucarate to rid my body of excess estrogen. I feel so much better today. I am presently dealing with anemia being that my cycle is every 17 days or so . Happy to hear your better and if I can help more don’t hesitate to ask .☮️NY

I’m 49 and have been bleeding for 17 days, I do have fibroids which I have had for years but my periods have always been on time, never late or early and never prolonged, they have always been very heavy on day 2 and 3 and are then normal. Im really worried the bleeding is something sinister and I need to wait a month to be seen by a specialist. I had a scan a month back before the bleeding started and there was an area that looked abnormal, the radiographer asked in my notes if I had a history of endometriosis as it could of been that but, I do not. Now I’m worried the bleeding is something else as I’ve been feeling a bit strange down below and have had a feeling something wasn’t right for a while. I’ve no hot flushes or anything like that but I have been suffering from depression and quite severe fatigue for over five years. I had a blood test a year ago and was told I was not in menopause or peri menopause. I was experiencing burning skin all over, just like you might if you have severe sunburn but no sweats. Ugh

I will be going through a full battery of testing: bloodwork, internal ultrasound, and uterine biopsies to make sure all is well inside. @@sharmisthabiswas7468 Hi, thank you for asking! I am now 51. I had a uterine biopsy and a pelvic ultrasound. Everything came back totally normal, which was frustrating but also a relief. I am just under the thickness measurement for endometriosis, and I have one fibroid that is about the size of a marble. They don't think the fibroid was causing all this. I had two 3-month injections of Depo Lupron which knocked things down to about half. I have also been on norethendrone for about 2 years. I am now only having a few bad days every other month. It is still horrible when it happens and puts me out of commission, but at least it isn't weeks and months straight, like it was before. If I am still having periods of heavy bleeding and clots by next summer, they are going to draw hormone levels and then maybe do a hysteroscope and ablation. I reallllllly hope it doesn't come to that. They are thinking that it will all slow down over time since I am at the age when most do.

Iron... it says One contributor to skin aging that isn't as commonly discussed as the heavy hitters (sun damage, smoking, even collagen production) is iron. Many of us are already familiar with iron's crucial role in the blood, but the mineral does have a downside when it comes to our skin.

She did a scan that showed she had fibroid but according to the doctor, the size of the fibroid was too small to cause such bleeding and such size shouldn’t cause an alarm. I had a period, then nothing for decades. It never bothered me. I guess I lived like a man, where periods are concerned. But then, 2 months ago, I had a sudden, heavy, bleed that lasted for about 2-1/2 weeks and nothing since then. My doc told me to take iron and I began taking iron and B12. Was good as, it made me feel better after the bleed. But, also after being on Metformin, for diabetes, for years, and having major hair loss, my hair has started to regrow. Apparently, Metformin causes B12 depletion. My major issue now? My doctor wants to do an endometrial biopsy. My abdominal and trans vaginal ultrasounds were pretty normal, although they couldn’t image the left ovary. But my endometrium is at 7mm. There is ZERO good news about that biopsy though. It is a barbaric, sadistic procedure, most women have said. Just numbing on the cervix and all Hell after that. So, I’m scrounging around, even at my now deceased mother’s house, for Percocet or ANYTHING that will allow me to get through that procedure. They make it sound like, “Take a couple of Advil!” Apparently, women find out different, once they’re on the table. Sounds like the mess that happened over at Yale.

It is common for periods to come more often during perimenopause but every other week is a lot. You can try taking 1 teaspoon of cinnamon 3 times a day on the days you are bleeding. You could also try our Agnus castus tincture which you take every day, not just when you are bleeding, and it can help to balance the hormones in perimenopause. www.avogel.co.uk/herbal-remedies/agnus-castus/ I would also suggest taking a natural iron supplement like Fluorodix to help support your iron levels. It could also be worthwhile to go to your doctor and get your bloods checked as excessive bleeding can lead to anaemia so it would be good to get that ruled out. Hope that helps!

My periods before were somewhat normal, it would start 2-3 days earlier than it should. Sometimes it would be 2-3 days late. First it would be heavy on the first 2 days and gets lighter for the rest of 3-4days. But about 2-3 months ago...my cycle was about 2weeks late. Then it would be normal the next month or so. Just recently, about 2 weeks ago, I would be spotting just a tiny bit as I would wipe after urinate. This had gone on for almost a week. Then, just last week my cycle started to get heavier and heavier [with clots size of a dime or penny]. medium flow for about a day in between, thinking it's going to get lighter, then goes back in being heavy again the next day. And still goes on for 7days now. I' have thought that this may be the sign for 'menopause'. But listening to your video that there maybe problems if it lasts more than 7days, I'm so afraid to go to the doctors to find out. Mostly scared to have any kind of surgery. However, I did have a gyn check up last year [ultra sound and vaginal swaps]. Had no problems of any sort. She has symptoms of hot flashes, sweating and fatigue...... Is it really need to worry about? I really need your help

Ugh

Hello Nicola, This can be very worrying while you wait. It is good to that you are awaiting to see a specialist to get to the root cause of any long term bleeding, see what the results are and perhaps consider a gentle iron tonic for now, if you are not on one already.

A.Vogel UK Thanks so much for your reply. Yes that’s a good idea. I’m still bleeding, it’s got heavier and then yesterday out of nowhere I began having symptoms of cystitis, the pain was honestly unbearable. My GP took a urine sample and put me straight on antibiotics and pain killers and the pain is now much less. In fact it reduced significantly within a few hours of taking the antibiotics. My doctor thinks it’s possibly an early kidney infection but can’t say if it’s related to what’s been going on. I see a nurse practitioner for a smear test and bloods on Tuesday and am waiting for the hospital to contact me with an appointment for the specialist. My doctor decided to put urgent on the request and I should hear something within the next 12 days. I might actually phone the hospital today to see if I can at least get a date. I had a little cry about it all yesterday but I’m trying not to be such a coward. The waiting is the worse part.

Hi A K Periods like this are very common on the approach to the menopause and many women experience similar scenarios. However, it is wise to get this checked by your doctor just to rule out other factors such as fibroids, polyps/cysts or even a prolapse. Good to hear that your doctor has organised this for you and hopefully, this will put your mind at rest. Best Wishes Eileen

The first thing to do is see your doctor and ask them to test your iron levels and if you are low they may be able to offer an iron supplement. Although frequent periods are common at this stage other health issues such as fibroids or a prolapse can also be a factor; your doctor can also find out what the cause may be.

Then finally had to go to gynecologist. They said my fibroids were size of six months pregnancy. So I was given option of IUD or surgery. I chose IUD. It’s been about six months, so far so good. My periods are irregular but lot less in quantity. I’ll take that over surgery any day. My anemia has improved. I m told that the size of my fibroids will shrink after menopause. Also I got diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. I see an endocrinologist for that.

Hello, I'm 42 and my periods has been erratic lately. I've been plant based for 13 years and started having Perimeopause symptoms around 39. Anxiety, periods coming every 2 weeks at times. 4 months ago I wanted to lose my last 10 pounds and restricted calories to 1,200. I lost my period and thought It was a sign of starting mennapause but maybe it was the restricted diet. I took dong quai for 2 days and started period. It was normal and 2 weeks later started again with old dark blood spotting for a week and then started period again. I've been bleeding for 10 days now not to heavy but alot of cramping. I wonder could this be emptying due to 4 months of build up on my uterus? I did have a endometrial biopsy, Trans vaginal ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound a little over a year ago due to abnormal periods starting and was told by gynecologist that lining is thin and there are no problems and was probably starting Perimenopause. I think I may need progesterone but am scared to take as I hear some people get depression. Any suggestions? Thank you kindly! 🙏
@AvogelCoUk
@AvogelCoUk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nellie Going on a restricted diet can halt periods for some women so this is a possibility. Also, then taking a hormonal herb such as Donq Quai could stimulate the hormones again. At this stage, hormones can fluctuate quite dramatically from month to month and this could lead to scenarios such as those you are experiencing, I would suggest acupuncture as this can often help to balance the hormones at this time. If your concerned about the side effects of the progesterone, then it may be an idea to discuss this further with your doctor and ask them to explain in more detail what you can expect if you decide to take it. I stopped and eventually started wild yam root. This time around after about fifty days I got my period. Stopped the yam root after about twenty days and period was light/moderate for a week but has been very heavy past five or six days. Even with some clots. Just when I think it lightened up, it kicks back in. I was told I have fibroids too. Not sure what’s going on here. Wondering if it’s heavy because uterine lining is thicker due to long lapse between periods- fibroids- the hormone disruption because of the wild yam root I stopped for about four days during my period-- ideas? They can also make sure that other issues such as fibroids, polyps/cysts or even a prolapse are not contributing to the bleeding. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Suvarna Frequent periods can cause anaemia which in turn can trigger hair loss. It is a good idea to ask your doctor for an iron test just in case you need some medication. Best Wishes Eileen

I am 46 almost 47 (3 months to go) and I just started seeing some light blood when I wipe after I urinate. I just had my period about a week and am half ago. I’ve been having hot flashes and night sweats and a lot of anxiety and heart palpitations. Is this a sign of perimenopause ? I’m seeing my ONGYN this Tuesday. Thank you so much ❤️

I was just at my gyncologist yesterday for the same thing. An ultrasound was done to rule out polyps, fibroids, tumors, etc because irregular periods can be a concern. The doctor said that most likely it is perimenopause but if my periods get heavier and/or periods get closer together that I should make an appt. She also checked my blood and urine. Results were good. Everything should be ok with you...just make sure you are honest about all symptoms no matter how minor. Best of luck!!

@@harpreetbhachu5138 Amazon Anna’s Wild Yam Cream expensive £50 and can get tablets quite cheap but I find this effective and worth the expense. You only need a pea size each day depending how bad you are. 3 weeks and one week off.

Hi Jhancy Although this can happen, it is important to get this checked by your doctor, especially if you are in pain. Your doctor can make sure that other issues such as fibroids, polyps or a prolapse are not contributing to the bleeding. Best Wishes Eileen

I am 47 and having heavy period for consecutive 2 cycles. 1st time I went thru D&C and this month, my gynae gv me T.acid and 1 mth hormone pill. The end, my gynae told me that Mirena is the best choice for my condition. However, I'm afraid of the side effect, it seems it is worse than just having heavy bleeding. Appreciate if you could share your view on Mirena. I am really confused with this change of hormone. Thank you!

Hi Alison Periods getting heavier and/or longer can often indicate that oestrogen is out of balance with progesterone and is staying too high; this basically keeps you stuck in period mode. This scenario is quite common on the approach to the menopause but, unfortunately it can go on for a long time for some women which is not good. The Mirena Coil releases progesterone which helps to ‘temper’ the oestrogen’s high activity so can be helpful in this situation. This is often a difficult decision to make; there are known side effects of the coil and from experience we do find that it can make low oestrogen symptoms worse the further through the menopause you go, however, continual heavy bleeding can make you very anaemic. This in turn can cause fatigue, joint aches, poor sleep, anxiety/stress which could affect your future health. The herb Agnus Castus in known to help in this situation as long as the periods are not too heavy or too prolonged. You could seek the advice of a Herbalist who can formulate a personalised treatment plan for you and acupuncture is known to be of benefit for this kind of situation so either of these may be worth looking into before you make a find decision.

@@rubimalik4878 I am not sure about your condition, but if you are approaching menopause & having heavy bleeding like me, and your gynae has advised you to try on Minera which she thinks it could solve your problem, then I will advise you to give it a try. After my 2nd D&C due to non stop heavy flow, I had no choice. I started using Mirena since 2020, my life back to normal instantly and I have not experienced any side effect & monthly period is reduced drastically. Hope this could help you & good luck to you!
