I checked my FET yesterday ahead of the winter when putting some additional insulation over it and it was absolutely minging, not quite as bad as the one in the video but not far off. An hours work for an amateur like me has now removed the possibility of getting a blockage. What was disappointing was I had my boiler changed this year and they put a magnetic filter and inhibitor in but left the FET alone which seems madness to me. Instead of the bung you put a link to I just used an old silicone gun nozzle that was blocked up with silicone with a bit of tape wrapped round the outside to give it some grip. Worked a treat and cost nothing

After bunging the outlet, I always siphon the tank with a larger diameter hose pipe into the bathroom w/c or outside drain, whilst letting the tank fill with fresh mains water. As long as there are no large solid lumps & keep you keep fresh water going in, no problems👍

Ive just moved into a new house. I think we have this type of water tank. When the heating is on it sounds like the tank is constantly filling. When thmthe heating is off,there is annoying drips. Our tanks are built into our bedroom wardrobes. So its a wake up call every morning 😂

Great video .. I had to change Rad valves to TRV and add 2 Radiators I did clean the tank out before draining After I added 2 Rads and changed the TRV I filled the system And it was a nightmare The Rads would only trickle fill When I finally filled the Rads There was air lock Only The upstairs Rads worked And the 2 added Rads are still not heating up The old system always been a difficult one Lots of time consuming Any advice please

Close all the rads down apart from the ones not working and hopefully it will shift some air.

Just a thought, where does all that mess / rust come from? Great video.

Good question. In this video red rust suggests oxygenated water getting into the system. A problem! The tank does not seem to be overfilling, so perhaps there is a leak and it is being topped up (the fresh water will also wash out the fernox/inhibitor) or maybe the system is pumping over. If you put a large glass jar under the vent pipe, you will see if it is pumping over, because it will fill with dirty water from the radiators. Also if you tie up the ball float for a few days, you will see if there is a leak, because the water level in the tank will drop. But again each F&E tank will tell a different story. It will show different signs and water colours. I doubt that this one has ever been cleaned, or had a rad flush, or had an inhibitor ever added, let alone a power clean. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irljgZVlnbfcfH0.html

How does pumping over cause oxygenated water?

Great idea with the drill pump ( I cleaned the tank out with a sponge and loads of kitchen towel). But great advice and, hopefully, my particular problem has been resolved. Quick question: can a cordless drill be used to operate that pump? Your one looks on the video as if it has both a battery and a corded connection. Very useful and informative videos. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻

My tank has never been so dirty I closed the tap, as the video shows. After cleaning the tank, as I didn't have the rubber to close the feed pipe, the water continues to fill the tank, through the feed pipe, why does this happen? Forcing water to be flushed. Please help

Genuinely, why do we have these anymore if we've got Combi Boilers? Excuse my ignorance but it seems archaic.
@nigelsmith3964
@nigelsmith3964 Жыл бұрын
Combi boilers can't be used in all houses/buildings. Combi boilers aren't all they are cracked up to be, the often leak and struggle with large properties - there is a lot to be said for Traditional systems.

Yes, ours is open fed. I'll be heading up into the loft today to check the F+E tank. I cleaned it out a few years ago but tied the ball valve up with a bit of cable from a joist. Great channel - I've subscribed 👍
