Reinforced double sided flooring tap works the best for installing nosing's and transitions, it sticks instantly and its almost impossible to remove.

I compiled a set of 10 steps that helped me after watching this video to help me better understand what to do. 1. Start with some mdf sheets, preprint them before cutting anything, and wait until their nice and dry. A cabinet finish paint would be fine. A semigloss would be good because it'll take some hits from feet and not be easily damaged like matts 2. Using a special tool call a Treadmaster, or just a normal tape measure, measure then cut the mdf into place. The video details how to use this special tool, but isn't necessary for onetime jobs or where tight finishes aren't a huge deal. 3. Before installing the riser, dry fit it to see if it fits and that the riser comes flush with the tread, or even a little lower. Also, put the ugly edge facing up, because the stair nosing will cover it. 4. Then, place some construction adhesive in a www pattern on the piece and mash it back into place, and shoot some pins along the top part where the nosing will cover and some more on the rest of the riser to hold it in place while the glue sets up. 5. Measure the depth of the tread using a tape measure, and the width of the tread using the tread master or tape measure. 6. Transfer the measurements to your planks that are clicked together and cut off BOTH ends of the plank if you're using one plank to span the stair. In the video, he covers 3 different method for patterns. Use a knife or saw to cut the planks down. 7. After dry fitting the tread, apply a full layer of construction adhesive to cover the entire tread. And press it into place. Continue these steps till all stars are covered. 8. For the nosing, measure and cut each stair to length, then, while dry fitting the nosing, hold it back about ¼" and mark a line along the nosing. This is where you'll sand the plank to give it a rough surface for glue. 9. Before applying glue to the nosing, sand down the inside of the nosing aswell with 120 or harsher grit. 10. After sanding both inside the nosing, and where the nosing will go, apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to the inside of the nosing, staying away from the edge. And roll the nosing on away from the stair, so that the glue-squeeze-out doesn't pass the nosing. With some blue tape, tape the nosing in place till the glue sets (usually 24 hours). Yay!

This is video is by far the best I have seen on installing vinyl planks on a stairway. I notice you that you kept the cork backing/underlayment when glueing them to the treads. Most new planks come with a synthetic underlayment layer attached. Is it still ok to use polyurethane adhesive with those? Thank you!

Thanks you so much for your detail careful demo which is excellent. However after watching several different demo on lvp stairs, I'm thinking and waiting for LVP manufacturers to make one piece of thread including nose so that there no joining pieces together. It's so much easier and time saving- just measure length and width for fitting for simple straight identical stairs.Gapping may show up over time as the stairs takes heavy beating with thread joining planks. Curving stairs may not be so easy to do.

Correct you do not need to purchase the stairs scribe just for a one time use. As for a substitute, you could get some pressure sensitive adhesive from a box store as long as you are able to wet, set application

Your videos have been incredibly helpful, but I've run into a problem that I haven't seen you address. I have vinyl plank in my room and I have stairs leading down to our basement. The stairs are no problem except for the top one. All of the stair moldings call for gluing the molding down. That's not a problem for all of the other stairs, but doesn't doing that on the top stair lock in the vinyl plank (shared with the room) since it can no longer move because the molding will hold it in place? I've been very careful to leave gaps around the floor and don't want to mess something up now.

Great video Southern Boys. Enjoyed the details. I wonder why you didn't use that handy scribing tool to measure the mdf for the riser tho.

You took your time with every step and made it perfect! But, I’m wondering are you not using baseboards? Also, how come you didn’t use weights?

No sir there will be no trim on these, and weights are not needed

I've seen mdf stairs with linol where it was all swelled and some how exposed to water at some point. Yet, for some reason, my boss told me to clean it up nice and keep going. If it was my job, I would have torn that stuff out and charged extra.

This is awesome! But Im trying to use a slightly more budget tool for the measuring part. Do you know of any other tool that would work similarly?

Any recommendations on how to transition from a top step which meets LVP that is running perpendicular with the stair treads? It would be great if I could have the nosing on the top step butt up and look flush next to the perpendicular planks on our second floor. Any ideas?

Great video on vinyl plank on stairs. My home has floating steps and I want to have vinyl planks installed. Is this something not typically done? I have not seen any videos on how this should be done.

You can do it by square footage if you want to Or you can just figure to planks per step if you only do the treads

Question: When you glue the vinyl for the tread, do you remove the foam backing off first? Do you need to?

Thank you for the helpful instruction. Our LVP stairnose is squeaking when we use the steps. The bottom of the stairnose appears to be rubbing against the riser. Any recommendations on how to fix this problem? Should the stairnose even touch the riser? We just installed LVP to the landing, so we'd like to know how to avoid the problem when we finish installing LVP on the rest of the staircase. We are using Smartcore Pro LVP.

Your steps should not move but Yes can’t avoid that then I would put some cardboard between the stair nosing and riser when installed after your adhesive driesThen for the cardboard out and you should have a sufficient space where it will not rub

Instead of using MDF on the risers, could you do tile? Have you done this before and do you have any recommendations?
