Thank you so much for these ideas. As an art teacher, it's sometimes tricky to know for sure how many coats of glaze are on the pieces, and if the bottoms are cleaned properly. These tips are all really helpful!

Once again, thanks Marie for a great video and your website. I am so happy you introduced me to kiln cookies as I made them per your other video and swear by them. It's also a great way to use up clay I'm not happy with but can't stand the thought of throwing it out - they got made into kiln cookies :-) I used cone 10 clay to use with my cone 6 glaze firings which I think might make them last longer, too.

Still plan on protecting the kiln with all your suggestions, but would like to avoid running glazes too! Thanks so much for very informative videos!

Hi thanks for another great video. I use a rub brick to clean off the kiln wash from my shelf when needed. You can get them in the brick laying are of your local home improvement store. Have you heard about kiln paper? I see it used in microwave kilns and for glass fusing ? Also love your hair down.

This is a really helpful video, as always. Thank you again! When you use cookies, do you still apply kiln wash to your shelves, just in case? Or are the cookies enough? I'm hoping to use the kiln-washed cookie method when I fire up my kiln!

Glad to hear it 😀 No I don't because I don't like the maintenance that goes with it. I used my friend's shelf with the old kiln wash on it for the video. My shelves still look pretty good. someone had suggested I put kiln wash on my cookies. I think it's a great idea but I still haven't done it. 😊

Hi Marie! Thank you for another informative video! I recently fired a speckled clay body, which ended up leaving fine black specks on my shelves after a single cone 6 firing. The specks are flat so I couldn’t scrape them off, so I had to add two new layers of kiln wash to cover them. Have you experienced this or heard of it happening? I was worried that the specks might transfer to my white clay bodies, thus more kiln wash (I foresee some shelf scraping in my future :).
@PotteryCrafters

You're welcome😊 Yes the same thing happened to my friend. She was surprised too. The kiln wash should be fine. Please let me know how it goes. 😊

Thank you for another informative video. I have a full kiln shelf same as yours but it has a small hairline crack on the top about 2 inches long. The crack has not deepened to the bottom of the shelf. It has survived a low fire test run and has only been used once. Is it safe to keep using it?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 жыл бұрын
Very good question Brittany. If it has only been used once I would try taking it back if you could. It is not recommended to use because of the pressure of the high temperatures it takes on each fire the spot may weaken and collapse. I hope this helps 😊

A question about cookies. The person who owns the kiln I use will only fire to 05. I watched your video on making cookies and you said to fire to 10. So if I were to fire my cookies to 05 because that is only how high she will allow will the 05 cookies still protect?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Жыл бұрын
Hi Don. Great question. I think I did not explain it right. You don't fire the cookies to cone 10 (unless you fire your pottery to cone 10) You will want to use cone 10 clay because it is a stronger clay body and lasts longer. I suggest cone 10 with grog because of it's strength and lower shrinkage rate.

I have 2 little divots in my kiln shelf that had kiln wash on it, from glaze melts. What do you recommend for filling these little holes? I didn't find much help in Google. TIA
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane. I would recommend filling them in with kiln wash. I had a few holes from glaze drips and the tech at Skutt told me to dab some kiln wash in the holes and then smooth them out with my finger so I don't get uneven bumps. Let dry and apply kiln wash to the whole shelf. 👍

Glad to help. It helps to have 3-inch bricks for more insulation and I found with smaller kilns you don't need to make a lot of pottery before you can fire up your kiln. Plus the room heats up less and it's easier on your power bill. 😊

Have you ever heard of making kiln cookies with a higher temp clay (like cone 10 clay) to use when firing cone 6 pottery at cone 6 temp in the kiln so there's no chance of the cookie melting if the kiln temp goes over cone 6?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 13 күн бұрын
Yes. That is a great question! I always make my cookies with cone 10 clay and grog so they don't warp and last longer. If you haven't seen it here is a video on making them. 😊 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLSqhMxy2Lu1o5c.htmlsi=P7th3i8XF7xmWyiE
