If you start your bike for the first time this Spring, you're doing serious, irreparable damage to your engine! In this video, I demonstrate the quick and easy way to avoid this damage, and prolong the life of your motorcycle engine.

Oh CRAP !! I wish I hadn't been offered then watched this video. At first I thought, cool trick, good idea -- as I was about to take my bike out for the first ride of the Spring today. 2013 BMW F800 GT, with electronic fuel injection. On this bike, the kill switch and starter switch are the same switch -- opposite sides of the same switch, so not possible to leave the kill switch off and also turn over the engine. So, I thought, use the full-throttle technique described here. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Engine roared to life immediately to red-line. I snapped the throttle shut, but fear the damage was already done -- whatever that may be. Suffice to say, don't trust or assume (as I did) that just because your bike is fuel injected, this fuel throttle "trick" will work on your bike allowing you to crank the engine, without starting.

Good maintenance tip there! I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where we ride our bikes in the winter months more than summer, because the AZ desert is smoking hot from about mid-May to mid-October easily. I can light off my GL1800 and jump on to go for a quick rip up the highway. Thanks man!

Fortunate? In the Pacific Northwest it's too cold for the same length of time it's too hot to ride in Arizona...except that while stored in a hot location oil from engine parts will more readily drip off internal engine parts over time. Arizona's saving grace? Relative humidity is low enough to inhibit corrosion. So, fortunate? Probably yes.

I have a 2022 Indian Scout and I tried opening the throttle all the way before startup as you demonstrated for fuel injected engines. It backfired once and roared to life before I could shut it down. It was painful. I hope I didn't scorch an injector. Time will tell. It has a kill switch when on activates an electric fuel pump and allows the engine to crank and run. The engine will not crank without the kill switch on. As far as I can see there is no way to just crank the engine over without it starting. I could take off the plug wires I guess, but then I would probably be dumping fuel into the cylinders.

Excellent and informative video brother, thank you for producing it and sharing it. As a alternative to holding the throttle open and staring can I lift the rear wheel and spin it manually in first gear to get lubrication throughout the engine block? Thank you again for your video. Goldwing owners should heed your advice not to start their engines if they don't intend to ride their bikes. The same applies to aircraft owners! With STA-BIL fogging oil sprayed in the cylinders in the fall, my 2002 GL1800A hibernates with fresh storage oil (30W) over the winter. Come spring, with fresh synthetic, a new oil filter installed, and the plugs removed, I crank her over at full throttle till the oil light goes out. After installing cleaned plugs, the engine is good to go. I regularly used a pre-oiler on my Navion's Continental E-225 engine before flying her after an extended storage. The pre-oiler was easy to make and use; it's too bad there's nothing like that for the Goldwing.

I run full synthetic oil and winter the bike in a heated storage space have never had a problem .Also the crank,primary and gear box oil is changed with fresh fluids before being put away. In spring I run it maybe 1500 miles and change the crank oil and filter and primary for the riding season.

Pretty interesting I've been riding motorcycles from Dirt bikes, crotch rockets and then Harley's for 40 years and I live in an area where the average winter is 25 to 55 degrees with 4-6 inches of snow on some days and on some days its in the 60's and all I've done to my bikes when I'm not riding them is start them up for 10-15 minutes let them idle and then give them a little rev and shut them off and I've never experienced any problems with my bikes ever. I keep them on a battery tender in between rides regardless of weather all year round and again never had any types of problems with any of my bikes. Hmmm? maybe I've just been lucky all these years or maybe this stuff only pertains to below zero weather??. Regardless thank you for sharing and ride safe.

A little addition for riders of historic bikes: If you have no electric starter on your bike, srew out the ignition plugs and kick the engine over several times to pump the oil into the cylinder heads. That will do the job fine enough. (This procedure is not necessary for two stroke bikes as they are oiled with the fuel and there are no long oil tubes to be filled up first.) If you have for example one of the old British bikes with a dry sump, this sump will not be dry any more but in most cases all the oil in the oil tank will have flown down into the sump after a few weeks or even month. (You will see it when checking the oil level in the oil tank.) Here you have to drain the oil out the sump first and but it back into the oil tank. That way you avoid over-pressuring the crankcase when starting the engine the first time. After that turn the engine over with the kick starter (no plugs) untill the oil has reached the cylinder heads as you would do with any wet sump motor.

I am so glad that you let people know to NOT start their bikes through the winter storage time to "exercise them." DANGER, WILL ROBINSON. It'll do a lot more harm than good. Also, for those storing their scoots for the winter. it is good to throw some SeaFoam in the tank as well.

Who they hell leaves their bike totally abandoned all winter? There are always days to ride, unless you're up in Northern Canada or Alaska, or in the high mountains. And even then, you can start the bike and let it warm up once in a while. Otherwise, this was over 7 minutes to say what could be said in two or three, and by the way the cams and rockers are still under full valve spring pressure even if combustion isn't happening.

Kill switch off and crank the engine.this will prime the oil. Not all bikes will crank with kill switch off.the 1500 isn't one of them I,ve taken engines apart that have sat for a year and found oil still in the lower bearings.so it's simply a case by case scenario The heads will definitely be dry,so pre priming when you can is optimal. (Tech for 42 yrs retired)

Hello, do you recommend removing the engine oil all winter? And how about the gasoline in the carburetors? do we let it evaporate? Should I leave the fuel tank full or empty? Thank you.
@GoldwingDocs
@GoldwingDocs 2 ай бұрын
I would CHANGE the oil just before winter, leave the clean oil inside the engine. I normally run the bike and shut off the fuel until the engine quits, ensuring the carburetors are empty. Don't let gasoline sit in the carbs and evaporate, that will leave behind gummy deposits.
