READ THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE WATCHING!
In this video, I set out to identify 10 items that I would avoid purchasing when coin collecting from a resale perspective. However, it's super important to remember that fun is still at the forefront of collecting (it is a hobby, after all), so this video is more directed at people who are wondering if their items are good long term investments. I have bought tons of these items (I think 5 or so) and don't regret most of them, but I do want to caution people dipping their toes into the hobby that some items won't resell very well at all in the future. From modern commemoratives to newer proof sets to plated coins to Etsy finds to unsearched eBay lots, know what to look out for so that you don't get hurt down the road!

I've been a numismatist for 55 years. This is a good video. He's basically saying if you like the coin, if it appeals to you then buy it, but just know that you might be buying something that will bring little or no return for your money. Buying coins because you like how they appeal to you is very easy. Buying a coin that will increase in value takes lots of education and research.

My father was an amazing numismatist and I've picked up a lot from him. He's since passed but I remember all he taught me and one thing aside from making a purchase that will reward a nice return is that he also told me if it's not that important for me to make the return and I like the item I want then, by all means, buy it. It's all a matter of personal preference, not always about the money. After all, I'm not a greedy person but do purchase items with considerable return value but items I just want to have too.

Yes, not all collectors do it for a huge profit. I do it for both, my father was a numismatist so I've learned a lot from him but I too buy some items, not for profit but because I do like them.

It all makes sense. Sometimes I buy stuff just because I like a coin, not for investing. My 17 year old son, who is a total Capitalist, thinks I'm stupid for buying something that won't be more valuable in the future. 'It's not your money kid, leave me to my devices.' 😁

Two things I think you missed. 1 I have seen " collector" coins advertised with one side having a colored commemorative. Most recently one for the moon landing, the one I actually saw appeared to be a sticker on the coin. 2. Buying unsearched rolls, buy them from the bank. At least you won't lose any money that way.

As a cashier i got a full roll of 1943 steel pennies, along with a bunch of other penny rolls, all sorted by year, lotta late 40's and 50's. I know they arent worth anything much over face value, but obviously they were someone's child/grandchild taking an estate collection and buying fricken cigarettes with WW2 history, and about 20$ in pennies grandma had been holding onto for 70 years. It was sad to see.

There are so many interesting & beautiful coins & rounds out there I've found no need in stacking. It takes more time but I rather buy 20 different pieces that I really like then a tube of all the same coin , round or bar . This is my favorite channel to get information from they have definitely saved me from making bad buys . I hope you keep the info flowing . It's impossible to learn to much . Since many modern products from the U. S. Mint have lost value, you can often buy them on eBay for less. Also, I *THINK* there might be some "sleepers" among the commemorative dollars. They hit a bit of a low point in popularity in the 1990s and thus you can find some with incredibly low mintages. For most of them, most people originally bought the proof version, and thus the uncirculated strikes have lower mintage. (My favorite is the 1994 P.O.W. silver dollar in MS70.)

There was some very good advice on this video. I do buy things that I like personally. They vary from Harris albums that I like to fill in all the way to NGG and PCGS registry sets. I don’t have to make a living off of coins. I understand the points that were made about what a coin shop pays for certain items. Personally I like to buy a proof set from every year. I have done this since I was a kid when there were silver in the sets. If you like proof sets, collect them because you enjoy them, not because they are a good investment. Treasure Town, you keep making these videos. I am so happy to se a young, KNOWLEDGEABLE collector making intelligent videos. ❤️😎❤️

My favorite way of collecting coins is finding them in my change (silver coins) or finding them when tearing down an old building or under old carpet when replacing the carpet. When I have more free time, I'd like to use a metal detector in farm fields where homesteads used to be to see if I can find any old coins. About 40 years ago, I found an Indian head penny laying on the surface of the dirt in a former barnyard behind my childhood home. It was well worn, but still cool to acquire an old coin that didn't cost anything.

But, the only person mentioned on a coin was trump :/ If we're leaving politics out of hobbies (and I'm all for that!!!), then let's leave it out completely ;) Nice young fella and I mean no disrespect, but stick with what you said. Should have left that out completely. Comes across as you just needed to mention him for whatever reason.

@@davidgrove481 Trump coins are a perfect example for what he was talking about. It's not political to mention U.S. presidents when talking about coins. Think about that for a minute. Also I'm sure there are a lot of new coin collectors out there who should know the Trump coins they bought are not from the mint. What other modern example could he have used for the subject he was talking about?

My thought on "unsearched rolls" is the seller may not have searched them but whoever sold them to the seller certainly did. They have likely passed through several filters before reaching the seller. What does one do with hundreds of loose wheat pennies bought in unsearched rolls....perhaps sell them back to the seller at face value? Then if he doesnt search them he can honestly claim them to be unsearched and resell them.

What do you think about the 2019-W quarters? Lower mintage, but clad. I couldn't find them in rolls in South Dakota, so, so I went and spent money on Ebay. I didn't pay more than $35 each, some where less, but I have a full complete P, D, S, S, S, W set. I won't be selling them, cause I know that I will lose a lot. But I'm keeping them to hand down my complete sets to my kids someday.

Thanks for the video. I just started getting into coin collecting for fun. I’ve more so been collecting what I think is cool looking so far and not what is rare. I bought a couple silver eagles but other than that it’s mostly been random coins I thought were neat. I think eventually once I know more about the coins and do my research I will look into getting more rare, valuable coins

Never buy high premium new 'collectable' coins. Anything that is advertised as rare or limited is not going up in value. In Australia I can pick up 30 to 40 year old proof sets for about double the price when they were new. That has not even kept up with inflation. I'm skeptical of the Lunar series from the Perth Mint too. To me this is just a cynical marketing ploy to rich Chinese. If the coin is gold or silver? Great! I will back up the truck and buy (assuming the premium is low). But if it's cupronickel? Forget it. Never. Same goes for all coins with paint on them.

Old dude, beginner collector. My mom got me started years ago. I'm mostly focused on filling the standard coin books, checking my change. However, some coins ain't gonna show up in my change. My wanted value is the coin books full. So, I bought some missing Ike's and Susan B's. I consider those books now 99% complete. I like what you said about if the coin is going to make you happy and you're not too worried about the money value get it. Of course as long as it's not horribly overpriced. Question? Old coins. If they're in a little plastic or paper sleeve when they are delivered should I leave them in that is it better for them to be left in that instead of taking them out and putting them in the coin book or doesn't it matter?

Very sound advice, especially with point #6. I see a lot of people collect worthless clad coins. They have binders upon binders filled with regular coins, then they get demoralized when the coin dealer offers them face value for all of their worthless coins. It's similar to people who buy cheap jewelry or gold plated jewelry, then get mad when its time to sell it and get offered nothing for it. It's better to save up for that gold necklace, because when it comes time to sell it, you know that the money is still there. Same with coins.

I bought some plastic coin flips (coin holders) from a reputable dealer. I put my best coins in them, malnly to protect my coins. A few weeks later I looked at them and saw that the pennies had slightly changed and looked duller than before. Also dark spots were starting to show. I immediately took them out of the expensive two sided flips and put them in separate plastic pill bags I bought at a drugstore. Do you have any knowledge of what kind of holders to use that are safe for coins. Besides slab's? Thanks Liz
