I have been doing craft fairs and farmers markets for almost 10 years. If I see someone arrive late, I offer to help them set up their tables or canopy. Sometimes an extra set of hands can be a big help when someone is stressed or had an unexpected morning event. Ive also helped new vendors tear down if I see they are struggling.

Being supportive of other vendors and helping is so incredibly important. And as I get more experienced in markets as the years go on, I continuing to learn this lesson. Looking back, there have been so many opportunities to help fellow vendors that I did not take at the time. I hope as I get to be as experienced as you, I can be better than I am now :) Thank you for sharing!

I went to a craft show last month. They claimed to be the largest in the east. I was so disappointed. There were some good stands. Many w/ no prices, some w/ no room to look around and surprisingly many ignored the customers. I wanted to get ideas because I’m finally ready to jump in. I was most surprised at how many just sold things I’d already tried myself from KZfaq videos, but sloppily done. I learned so much and you are confirming my impressions. Quite a few we’re still there w/ same boring items and they looked bored and disappointed themselves. I went on the 1st and last days. One of my friends has a stand and only sells one beautiful item. 1st day, she had so many choices hanging on perimeter rods that I had to Duck under them to wave to her. Last day, she was beginning to run out. She said she has 3 rules - find a niche, do it well, and enjoy yourself. I like that.

I did my first craft show yesterday and I’m proud to say I didn’t do any of the 5😂 I saw so many pushy people and I told my boyfriend “yeahhh I will not be doing that” I mostly crocheted during it and let people actually look at my products. I would make conversation with them enough but not too much to distract them from looking at everything. I actually did pretty good and a lot of table around me didn’t do great, there wasn’t much foot traffic

This past Christmas craft show season I did an event where there were no shows. Don't be afraid to ask the coordinator if you can fill in the spot before they notice the spot isn't filled! This specific show I've done for 3 year and the coordinator was so relieved I brought this to her attention and encouraged me (and the nearby vendors) to shift ourselves to give up more display room. My show neighbors were DEFINTELY pleased with the extra space and the coordinator promised me preferential booth choice next year for helping things run smoother when she wasn't aware things had gone off. Another tip: Take pictures of your set up so you can see what works well for you. It also helps setup in another space the similar size next time. If you haven't done a show before set up at home and take photos then. It truly helps. You can spend time tweaking the set up and then once you get to a show where you're on more of a time crunch you have those pictures to reference.

Great tips on avoiding mistakes. I went to a craft fair this past weekend and definitely got a good feel for the crafters that are more prepared than others. One table had some pretty jewelry that I wanted to find the price. I normally never buy jewelry and they might have got a sale from me that day but because there wasn't any price I could see anywhere I just walked a way because I was uncomfortable asking. On the flip side one of the 1st booths I came to was set up so beautiful and her work was beautiful as well. I ended up having a very pleasant conversation with her and made a point of telling her that she did a wonderful job with her booth. I also made a purchase even though I really didn't need the product but I couldn't resist!

Those are such great points! Making yourself and your products as accessible to as many potential people as possible is so important! Some people will certainly not be as talkative, and (just like your example) may even be uncomfortable asking about the prices, so having information available to them within your display is important! Additionally, being able to present yourself as welcoming and willing to talk in a non-pressuring way is also key to perhaps either swaying them toward a purchase, or making them comfortable enough to ask any questions they have!

Absolutely! I completely agree! There are many factors - so many of which are out of our control - which can lead to some challenges! I truly do assume the best of her, and that there were of factors which may have built up to her being upset! But, I still do think the story holds value for us other vendors and crafters about how we manage obstacles as they arrive during craft shows! Thank you for sharing! You make great points and I value your input :)

I think the biggest vendor turn off for me happened when I was at a local craft show and was new to the area… I am from an area where the crafting community is big and interactive. They support each other! So I went to the booth and was admiring the a cute stuffy. I said I loved her work and she was all bubbly. I then said I was new to the area and asked where she gets her yarn because there aren’t any craft stores in town. (I was struggling on figure out it where the yarn shops were at the time) She immediately frowned, turned away from me then ignored me. 😟 Like I genuinely liked the stuffie I was looking at. Definitely didn’t buy after that treatment.

I’ve done craft shows and a variety of art shows / gallery events for over 10 years now and I don’t know the jewelry booth you are talking about and can’t speak to their quality but sometimes people just sign up for the wrong event ! Like they knew what they were signing up for but it’s just the wrong event for them and their product… that’s okay ! If you have a bad experience especially Becuase of “too high of pricing” but you know your product quality and have done the math and can’t drop your prices because you won’t make a profit or you’ll even lose money… don’t give up :) try another show or another town / city / event .. you’ll find your audience :)

For tip 3, I was in a craft market this weekend selling my crochet things and I saw another table selling mostly jewelry but they had a few crochet gnomes up too, and I just kinda wanted to know how much they were to kinda see if my pricing was a little high low or in the right spot (this was my first show but I’ve been to this event in previous years and seen their table so I thought they’d have more experience pricing than me) and so I went to their table looking for a sign or tag or anything and they had signs for all their jewelry but not for any of the gnomes! I am an extremely introverted person and I didn’t want to buy anything I just wanted to know the price, so I felt like I couldn’t ask because then they would think I wanted to buy it, but I also really wanted to know…people don’t understand why I didn’t ask, but I did look around their stand for a bit pretending to shop so I didn’t feel weird leaving😅(also my table was not unattended during this time, I called my mom to watch it because I wanted to look at other tables and she did a good job lol)

I totally understand!! My husband is incredibly introverted and would never ask, either! I think something important to remember is that people price differently based on different circumstances! They might be selling some crochet items for a lot less because its overstock or something, or they might charge a lot because it takes them longer to make! What's most important is that you're pricing what's comfortable for you! That you feel like your time and work is being valued! ❤️❤️

I understand every single thing you described And I feel the stress of it in my chest. I would say make good friends with an extrovert but they always put you on the spot when you least expect it, It's easier just to Let it go so you won't replay it in your head for the rest of the day.

The don’t be pushy part not only applies to customers but also your fellow vendors. Me and my mom have separate businesses and we were at an event and her vendor neighbor was so pushy asking her to barter her stuff for some of his. Asking his wife to go and barter with my mom. In the end we believe he cheated her out of some money. He paid for another customer and took the ones he wanted stating that they’d agreed to barter (they had not) then had my mom buy something from him that was worth more than what he got from her. If you’re okay with bartering your products that’s no problem, just make sure you’re getting AND GIVING something of equal value and aren’t pushing it like this is Wall Street!❤ Lol I feel like I was yelling! Sorry everybody! 😂😂

He might be doing this in order to take bartered goods and resell online and you wouldn't know unless you've got a business card with a listed web address of where his goods could be purchased online. Might be worth checking into. Very sorry this person is being "that person".

I’ve been an international sales rep (selling Klipsch speakers) and selling at arts and craft shows since 1987. NEVER ask a customer if you can help them. 9 times out of 10 they’ll tell you no. The best thing is to just start pointing out the wonderful things about your work. Get the potential customer as enthusiastic about your pieces as you are.

Taking people’s feedback so personal is one, not the biggest, setbacks I have. True, it’s valuable info you didn’t have before. At my first craft show I sold nothing. The lesson: I was selling scarves and blankets in 85-90 degree weather. At my 2nd craft show, I sold $60 in 7 days. Lesson: my mother told me it was where I was placed that was my downfall. The traffic there was not as heavy as in other areas. Also, I could have mingled a little more (difficult for me) as people were walking by. Don’t be pushy: Last, hustlers are everywhere. The vendor next to me kept trying to barter with me; I was not interested in going on an overseas trip with him as the guide.

I did my first fair and I didn’t like it at all. I sold macrame, it was really busy. I only sold three pieces and gave away 5 key chains to some little girls towards the end. I was just disappointed. I stood up most of the time, engaged with people talked about my product and smiled without being too aggressive and I don’t know maybe people didn’t get my display maybe. There was a vendor doing nose piercing all day long! Maybe I need to do that.

Funny that you mentioned the vendor who comes late. Yesterday, I was at a market and they didn’t say what the event set up time was and there was a vendor who showed up an hour after the event started. I was amazed. If a potential customer comes up to you and looks at your items and then says where is whatever, that very obviously you don’t sell. Then the potential customer says how am I supposed to buy anything if you don’t have x,y,or z? I wanted to respond to him without being rude like I felt he was being to me. What would you do?
@camryns_cute_creations
@camryns_cute_creations 9 ай бұрын
That is a tough situation! The best thing you could do, in my eyes, would to firmly but warmly tell them, "Yes, I don't have that item! I do have [an item of yours] that you might be interested in! Otherwise, perhaps one of the other crochet vendors will have what you're looking for!" If a customer is that frank with you about their desires, and being that rude about it, I would suggest you look to end that interaction as soon as possible by being clear about what you have, and that they are free to look elsewhere.

The #1 mistake with newbies is display. Flat displays do not get attention. Different eye levels, but especially going vertical can take a stand from hardly having any business to having the best day ever. The feedback thing I take with a grain of salt. I mean, every now and then it's actually something useful, but I've found in the 10 years of selling on and off across the past 21 years that there are a lot of busy body (or to be kinder, maybe just well meaning) customers who have all kinds of strange ideas of what you need to do as a vendor. For multiple seasons I contorted myself into pretzels trying to do a bunch of it and found over time it was a waste of time and that probably a good 85-90% of those feedback comments were not helpful.

For #4 about not being distracted, do you think my crocheting during the show to pass the time would be ok, if I'm selling products that are not related? I sell bath and body products, but crochet for fun! 🙃
@camryns_cute_creations
@camryns_cute_creations 9 ай бұрын
Hey there! Hmmm that is tough! I think that because what you're working on isn't directly related to what you're selling, you should be very careful of when you do it! I think if you're alert enough and limit yourself to slower moments, it should be fine to crochet a little! It certainly has a different perception than just being on your phone, but I think you should be careful! Make sure you're still able to notice customers approaching and able to greet and interact with them!

I don't think it's anything to be embarrassed by, at all! :) It's important to recognize, though, when good times are to work on something like a Reel for an event, a skill which takes time! I only work on stuff like that on my phone when it gets slow, and then stop when people start shopping again! Sometimes, if the event is busy enough, I never work on my phone just because there's never a slow time for me to do it! Do not be hard on yourself, it's all ok! I would just try to look at a situation and ask yourself, "Is now an opportune time to make a quick Reel, or should I be really present?" Being able to understand the flows of events takes time to build, so don't worry if you don't feel like you've got there quite yet!! :) ❤️❤️

Question!!! Is it ok to try and sell your misfits? The items that didn't turn out quite right but aren't THAT bad... eyes are a little off or head is crooked. That sort of thing. Or would that come off as "being in it for the money and not the joy"?

I think if you feel they are no longer up to the same quality as the others, they can certainly still be sold at a discounted price in some sort of "bargain bin" situation. I think it'd be cute to come up with a cute name for the collection and sell them as oddities! I have a bargain bin for items I am no longer making but haven't sold out yet! If you aren't comfortable with that, you could try to salvage some of the yarn/materials used for other projects, or you could even consider donating the items!

I have a problem engaging with my customers. I notice many stand throughout the show and is able to grab the attention of the customer. My problem is: I am wheelchair bound, and if my remote to my chair is under the table, it looks like I'm just sitting in a regular chair. Unfortunately, people see this as being lazy or uninterested in my selling product. Is there any advice that you could give me? I don't want people to stop because I'm in a wheelchair, but I also don't want to look uninterested. I love you excitement in your videos. Thanks in advance.

I've done several craft shows and I'm still struggling with customer interaction. When I shop myself, I can't stand the owner to hover. But I'm also aware that some customers like that attention. So, I'm really confused as to what to do. I usually bring a book or I scroll on my phone. I acknowledge anyone that walks up and tell them I will be glad to answer any questions they have.

I'm not sure what you sell exactly, but is there a way for you to actively be working on whatever craft you do while you hang out? If crochet, maybe be working on an item? Or perhaps have a little sketchpad where you are roughing out ideas? If metals, jewelry, or wood working maybe be polishing something? Anything that APPEARS to be part of your manufacturing process. Its a good way to take stress of potential customers so they can display their intrigue without the feeling of being ignored by someone who is on their phone or being jumped at by an all-too-bored vendor the moment they approach. Also is a great conversation starter for both customers and the vendor.

I thought you were going to say..."dont mark down an item for one person and not make it that price for everybody"...or dont let people chew you down to a lower price than you are ok with.

It was her first show. Chance is she didn’t know better. Calling someone out even if not using their name is rude and mean. When it’s your first time you cannot be expected to know everything. Not everyone knows to research before hand and also you don’t know WHY they were late. Car trouble, traffic accidents, etc are out of our control. I was late to my doctor appointment because someone backed out and hit our car. Should I be punished because we got hit and had to wait on cops and all that to get taken care of when it was not in our control? No and thankfully my doctor was understanding and was able to fit me in anyway. So I know first hand stuff can come up and make you late.

Number one thing if you sell scrunchies wear one. Meaning, whatever you sell wear it, if you sell tie-dyes wear one of your own shirts, right? I’ve gone to so many events for people never wear anything they mix KZfaq videos you should be wearing. Yes I know you can’r wear a candle 🕯️ ; every one of your family members friends, that comes to your booth should be wearing or have. People will notice it.
