Me (an Indian) getting educated by a foreigner how to avoid scams in my own country.... Can't thank you enough Karl

I’ve seen this guy yesterday at the airport and told him: heyy you are famous, you are on KZfaq. He got angry and walked away. He already knew..

As an Indian the best advice I can give you when you visit India is, stay away from people who come to you by their own choice & offer services or stuff. If you need any help or directions, talk to people who mind their own business & are oblivious of your presence.

It's pretty disgusting knowing somebody is lying to you and watching them purposefully smile, make eye contact, and know they are doing every movement only to try and scam you. It's psychopathic!

Everytime the India's said : "my friend listen" you should run.

I’ve been traveling the world my whole life. Never have I felt more unsafe than in India. Avoid if you’re a female.

And then India blacklisted him for spreading awareness. Shows the corruption of the country. Karl is so patriotic to India his adopted country.

Hey Karl! I love watching your videos, and the saddest part is that despite living in india for more than 50 years my dad got scammed by these so called “legit” taxi drivers. Unfortunately he didn’t know how to use the Uber/Ola App and which metro stop was the closest to him. I couldn’t pick him up because of my office timings and by the time i called him to book an Uber for him (knowing how these people scam you) he had already gotten into a cab. The taxi driver won’t even discuss the price and will drop you to the location and then extort unreasonably high prices (mentioning road taxes, parking charges, extra luggage tow charge, oil prices). The worst part is that they generally pick an un crowded road to drop you off so if the heckling goes out of hand, they can use force. It pains me to say that i couldn’t reach over there to help him out or pick him up. Some Indians do this under the pretence or an excuses of having a hard/poor life, but no one should resort to such petty methods of borderline thievery. With enough hard work and patience one can make a comfortable honest living. Thank You so much for spreading awareness and making these videos!

What gets me even more angry about people who rip off others, is their disrespect. They have the nerve to get angry with you when you don't comply with their scam! 😠 They believe they have the right to scam you.

I'm Indian and I request to all my foreigner friends please don't trust these kind of people and you should book your hotel online. I'm really sorry if any one faced these kind of problem. If you find any problems you should complain to police station .

I spent a month in India alone and loved it.Ate at locals houses etc,swam in the sea ,went into the hills,had a fantastic time but now and then you have to be assertive cos there are opportunists . Great inside info Karl,love your content,keeping it real.

The abusive guy didn't really have to open his mouth. His 'class' was exuding even without him uttering a word. You could easily see through the first 'Listen my friend' guy. He considers himself a smooth talker; smooth enough to convince you to take his ride. Glad you didn't fall for any of it 😇

I found this really funny because although I'm white I was born and grew up in India. So many people don't realise that I speak Hindi, Gujarati, and Tamil. I've really let loose on some people that have called me names and it's hilarious.

Being an Indian, I never paid 400rupees ever in my life for "TAXI"...

I always take a prepaid taxi and everyone pays the same price at the prepaid office. You are helping so many foreigners not to get cheated by private and even unregistered taxis. You are also safe in the taxi because the driver is allocated to you. A woman from Byron Bay, Australia was robbed and murdered by a random taxi driver.

I am an Indian and unfortunately I agree with this comment. I sincerely apologise for the experience you had. I face this on a daily basis while traveling to college or back home. These auto drivers are quite deceiving and disrespectful. This is too sad. I wish the legal system can take some actions to improve this. I’m so sorry again 😔

The saddest part is these scammers will never see this video made on themselves and even if they did I'm not sure they will ever feel guilty. They just don't understand the importance of digital presence.

Valuable infos. I remember around 2002 I landed in Mumbai and was assaulted by a bunch of guys trying to sell me a cart first to carry my luggages. Hopefully I was staying at a proximity hotel so I could just walk there.

Me being indian please don't go there alone. it is unsafe there specially for women. I am not trying to defame india but truth is truth. I don't want anyone to get hurt there in any way emotionally or physically. (Note for Indian bhagts :I will ignore all bad comments)

The same thing happened in Bali, those unlicensed taxis are 2-4x more expensive compared to already overpriced official airport taxi.

Every customer is his first customer, international or local, and everyone gets a good price and first friend.

It's like the Indian scam callers ..but in person...ugh ..

Also just a helpful insight : the reason they were asking for the hotel name was because they usually have contacts in (some) hotels and will get commissions if they bring people there. If you would have told them your hotel name and if in that hotel they won't get commissions, then they probably would have manipulated you by taking you to a different hotel (where they have contacts) by giving the excuse - "this hotel is better" or "the previous hotel is closed" etc. Just telling them that you had to go to main market was a brilliant move.

I am an Indian and I am terrified of exiting railway stations or airports in the country becasue of these guys (they can get abusive and violent and they gang up against you). Given that, I think Karl held his own very nicely. Also, note that pre-paid taxis are themselves expensive, with prices jacked up as much as 100% because of pressure from these private guys. So the government also extorts, but to a smaller degree.

As an Indian i would like to suggest the foreigners to use app like uber or ola for their transportation because there would be no scam like those to reach the hotel safely

Exact same scam happens in the north of Vietnam too. "hey, take my taxi, skip the line!" and they pretty much hold you hostage for more money.

When someone comes up to you in the street and askes you is it your first time in the country,never say yes.

Had faced this before and now the best way to deal with this is 1) Opt for Meru cabs. Their counter is just around the Prepaid Taxi cab. They charge 5 to 10% extra over the prepaid taxi however their car's are in better condition and fully AC. Never had issues with them even after midnight. 2) If you're taking uber at the Arrival Zone, you need to go to Departure zone to get the Uber faster because they are charged extra if they come to arrival and you can save money there 3) Opt for prepaid taxi(Delhi police) like you see in the video. This is the last option because if you land at night then good luck with finding the taxis because these notorious drivers straight out reject you and noone from Delhi police will come to help. However during the day time its probably easier. However, if suppose you do get a taxi and he is trying to wait for other passengers so as to share with you then go ahead and move out of the car and complain to the police nearby as they are not allowed to do that. One trick to avoid rejection from these prepaid taxi drivers is that when they ask you "where are you going", without saying a word, get into the taxi because once you are in the taxi, they CANNOT throw you out from taxi as they have to drop you wherever you want to go. 4) Download the DMRC app and go for Delhi Metro to find your routes. If you have too many luggage then you can avoid it but its best option for solo travellers.

Rule of thumb for arriving anywhere: just use the pre-paid taxi stand. That way there's less chance of getting ripped off and if you have a complaint, you have an actual taxi company that you can contact.

Almost fell for this as a 21 year old lone traveler 20 years ago. I was supposed to be picked up by a colleague. I didn’t know who my colleague was or what hotel I was staying at. So I had to find him at the airport and I was clearly looking out for a person. But instead one these guys found me and pretended I was to be picked up. Im so glad I didn’t fall for it but I was young and tired and almost fell for it.
