Thank you. Perfect timing. I have a 9 mo female that I have yet to introduce to gun fire, mainly due to lack of birds since it is breeding season for all of the hatcheries. this video will come in handy when I do the first intro and follow up sessions.

Thanks for being willing to still use the live bird. People love to pretend they don't know where meat comes from. Sometimes not everything is pretty. Hunting for your own meat is pretty damn ethical in the grand scheme.

Hello where is a good place to get pigeons? I've looked for a place in town but no luck. I tried buying from your website but it says out of stock. When will you have more in stock?

We took our pup to the local gun range a few times and walked towards the trap lines. No indication of nervousness. Next are the pigeons and shooting conditioning you just showed in this video. Tonight will be our first pigeons! It's so awesome Shock is the same age as my pup. AND just to be more like a stalker, we went to SD this weekend to check out our fields for pheasant hunting so we're on the same schedule as Shock is in more ways than one. Great videos!

@@StandingStoneKennels - I haven't been to the gun range again since you responded to my post. Thank you for responding. I have since taken my dog out and retrieved around timed gun fire like your video showed. He did great! glad I didn't mess him up with my trip to the gun range. I look forward to more video's with Shock! IS there a dog named "Awe" yet? Be cool to hunt with Shock and Awe!

Great video as always!!! Question: My dog hasn't been around gunfire since last hunting season she did great then after training her as shown. She has demonstrated big time shyness with the neighbors shooting off fireworks during the weeks around the holiday. Do we need to start over with her to work on the new shyness?

Mine is on her 4th season. Steady wing shot fall. And she still hates fireworks. If they have prey drive gunfire becomes part of there reward of getting the bird

I'm planning to use a shooting range for acclimation. The thoughts about distance and focus will be applied. Thanks for another great video. Your concepts have helped me train and acclimate our bordoodle to a variety of situations and sounds including power tools. Good stuff.

@@StandingStoneKennels I’ll park down the street and have a bag of roasted chicken in hand. Every time a shot goes off and she is positive and curious, she will get chicken and praise. We will progress slowly building the association. This is how I did the power tools. Best I can do for her here in Chicago.

When do you learn the dog to fetch before pointing lessons with bird launchers or after establishing a firm point.What do you do if the dog doesnt take the bird in mouth.Thank you
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! We start working on building retrieving drive with little 8 week old puppies! We also do bird introductions before the puppies learn to point with launchers. If they don't want to retrieve the birds we try a bunch of fun tricks to get them interested in feathers (we can help give you suggestions and help more via patreon: www.patreon.com/standingstonekennels). Ultimately if they lack retrieving drive and won't pick up birds we would consider doing a trained retrieve when they are old enough (close to a year old).

I have a question I have been dying for an answer … I have a 7 year old bird dog… dove hunted all of her life. The kind I would never have to leave my chair during the hunt… last year we started hunting ducks, and we are getting really big in it… with her being in a blind, and can’t see the ducks like she can the dove. she’s having a hard time finding the ducks… for example, last year she brought back a decoy… she’s an excellent bird dog, she just needs a little tweak. Is there anything I can do? Especially with duck season being right around the corner?

She has relied on her vision her whole life. You need to get her using her nose and you. I would start with teaching hand signals (whistle sit, over/back) and teaching her to use her nose by finding dead birds in cover. Then combine the 2. Lone Duck and Freddy King has some good videos that show drills for teaching hand signals.

You should look into using balloons as well. Small balloons are not as loud as big balloons. Something that you can do in the house and the backyard while they are young. Great way to introduce gunfire if you don’t have a lot of land or time to do gunfire intros.

@bballplayer5555
@bballplayer5555 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, obviously a balloon and a shotgun aren’t the same. But most people can’t fire a shotgun in their house. Most people find it difficult to get out to an open field to fire a shotgun regularly. So training sessions tend to get compressed into covering everything. Popping balloons, I’ve found, gives you a good base to gunfire and it’s something you can do in your house in a much more controlled environment. It may not work for everyone but being able to up your training sessions from once a week to 2-3 times is going to allow people to reduce the amount of things covered in a single session and really work on conditioning rather than exposing

I think dogs have become more cowardly over the last 50-60 years. A well bred hunting dog will allow you to shoot your gun without failing you. If your dog has no natural courage...You just have a pseudo-hunting dog.
