While not every outfit is a win, generally she does a great job of dressing her body type really well. In this video, we're focused on the silhouettes & approach to outfits that flatters the pear shaped body type the best rather than outfit critique alone. This can be very useful if you share any similar style concerns to the beautiful & fabulous #helenmirren

For more details on her style concerns & body type:
Helen is reported as 5'4" and her widest point is her hips. She is well balanced vertically, meaning her torso and legs are proportionate. She is a little bit busty, and has a well defined waist. Her main style concern is the pear-shaped aspect to her figure, she is wider at the hips & thighs.
With body type and shapes, it's never the be-all-end-all. There is never a one size fits all approach, however, knowing what your widest point is and your general natural shape is extremely helpful in dressing. It allows you a better idea of where your visual balance lies. Your widest point/s will always be visually "heavier" and dominant to your silhouette. When that area is highlighted in an outfit, it tends to exaggerate that widest point and can make you look out of balance (ex. top heavy). But when you dress strategically and either divert away from or enhance a different area, you bring balance to your silhouette which creates a better visual and often makes you feel more confident.

Her personality always shines through! Love the red lace dress….it’s an amazing look for her…..it seems to elongate her waist. I truly believe most things she selects to wear are appropriate for her age and shape. Her skin looks amazing, especially her neck …..which sometimes is hard to camouflage. As I age, I tend to wear more fitted clothing, Baggy clothes only seem to make things look like a house of mirrors! Lol😂😂😂😂.

I'm sure you already know Beebs but Helen is nearly 80 years old and she is our national treasure . I agree with a lot of what you say but there is that thing called British eccentricity which Helen has is a stylish way . As oppossed to Helen a Bonham Carter who has it in a wild way . We wouldn't have either of them any other way . Your advise is still great for use normal pears lolllll x

I’m glad you mention the small shoulder pads. It’s so unfair that they are generally looked down on because shoulder pads are associated with the exaggerated 80’s ones. I really find subtle shoulder pads very helpful for me. I am an hourglass shape, with a slight curvature to the top of my spine, so they are advantageous for the accentuating the waist and correcting the look of one shoulder sloping They work best in jackets for me. At this time of year could you look at knitwear?

I agree about the shoulder pads. I'm also an hourglass, and fairly busty. Shoulder pads give me a more structured tailored look with busty outfits. Those with rounded shoulders really look droopy if there is nothing to support the bust. Shoulder pads helped that look much better.

I have the same shape and shoulder pads have always helped to balance me out but since shoulder pads are out of fashion and people that wear them are kind of made fun of I don't dare wear them.

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for your comment. I am also an hourglass shape with scoliosis and the curve in the top of my spine. One of my shoulders definitely slopes lower than the other, and it never occurred to me to use a thin shoulder pad! Now I will try that. Thank you so much!

I've noticed that Dame Helen repeatedly makes two style decisions that I don't think are the best for her. First, she looks amazing in saturated colors. Too white or too silver washes her out. The second is when she wears tops that are too low. It makes her look as if she has a supremely long neck that's out of proportion with her torso. Other than that...she's golden.

I like that Dame Helen doesn't dress like an "old lady". I'm 70 and refuse to dress my age. I don't wear clothes that look ridiculous on me. I wear clothes that flatter me.

I had to google how tall she is. When you said she wasn't particularly tall, I was curious - 5'4". I thought she was way taller! She looks elongated which is "impressive" for a pear shape.

How nice Beebs that you made a program about Helen Mirren's clothing style, always liked her as an actress. My three favorite dresses are the black sleeveless one with a jewel at the neckline, the red silk dress with off-white lace sleeves and the two-piece with black and white striped skirt and black top. Beebs stunning in a top that Brigitte Bardot could have worn, and with appropriately styled hair. Great!

Helen Mirren is always a wow. Liam Neeson said a very flatteing story on Graham Norton's chat show, and both he an Ms. Mirren were guests that night. Liam Neeson says that years back both he and Ms. Mirren were in a movie back in the 80's called Excalibur, I believe. He says that he was standing around with a fellow actor on the movie shoot and they both saw Ms. Mirren walk by and Liam just says, "f***". You could tell that Ms. Mirren was both bashful and flattered by the story and she thanks him. When I saw that part if the interview, I just remembered how nice it was to hear when people are complimentary to your efforts on your person and, more fulfilling, your achievements.

I do not remember where I heard this but a popular celebrity couple went to one of the top events. As they entered the wife stopped her husband and asked who was the most beautiful woman in the room. He pointed behind her to Dame Helen. The wife totally agreed.

Beebs, you look beautiful in that soft pink sweater! 💖 As for Helen, I loved the green lace dress, as well as the black jacket & pants with the white shirt & black heels.. I'm totally obsessed with that long, gray button coat. In fact, I want it! 😊 The gold leaf gown is gorgeous., It looks very elegant. The green flowing gown with the gold bag is beautiful,. The long, deep blue gown right after that is also lovely. I think she looks best in solid, bold colors rather than busy prints. Helen looks absolutely amazing at 78, & I love that she is still so stylish & sexy. It's not often that I see fashionable, older women featured , & I really appreciate it. I will say, as a 60 year old woman who has had children, your body starts to change and it becomes more difficult to look good in your clothes. I work out and I am still a size 4 (usually) but my butt is getting smaller and saggier but my waist is getting a bit thicker. So Helen probably is dealing with more body issues than a younger person. I always say that the older I get, the less forgiving clothes tend to be and I need clothes with more structure.

I was a teen in the mid 2000s and the tabloids were hating on having broad hips with a passion. A body like Paris Hilton was all the rage (according to them). As a pear shaped girl I loved this video. The dilemma about hems and ankles is something I thought about for a long time. The conclusion is either show it or cover it completely.😂😂😂 I didn't have any other choice. I have short legs. Having hems in unconventional places is a luxury reserved only for supermodels. If you have to show off your legs wear a more volumonous top and pop on a pair of heels. Also when choosing cropped pants choose something that has more room in the hem area to make your ankles appear relatively small. Slim straight or slightly flared works well.

Love your pink sweater! As a pear, myself, I really appreciated this video. I LOVED the green keyhole dress-looked great on her. You didn’t address her hair (since that wasn’t the point of the video), but I’m just going to comment on it-she looks beautiful w/ short hair or updo w/ a part, but the long straight do’s w/ bangs do her no favors. Hi Beebs, I’ve been meaning to say for a while that I would LOVE it if you could do a series on what to wear for different body types (I’m a 5.3inch Apple shape, so pretty much your average supermodel type 🤥🤥😂) Maybe for each season…a wedding outfit, casual outfit, night out etc. I know nothing & I’m pretty sure most of the time my outfits do the opposite of what I think they do. I can’t be the only one. Maybe including a member of the RF or a celeb who has the body type you’re talking about that week would help your views. Totally understand if it’s not something you can do, I can imagine it would take you such a long time. It was more of a suggestion for if you ever run out of ideas really. I've watched Excalibur many times (not in some years though) and until your comment did not know Liam Neeson was in it. It took me years to realize Gabriel Byrne was in the movie. Helen Mirren was terrifying as Morgan Le Fey. For anyone who enjoys movies based on the Arthurian legend, Excalibur is a good choice.

Dame Helen has always had such an enviable figure. I just wish that she would stick to a chin/above the chin hair style, it is so much more flattering and saucier looking. The long, platinum hair is too drab and aging. I would love to rummage about in her closet! Her dresses are beautiful!

Great video. Love Helen - she is a fantastic actor. Side note, I never give much thought about pantyhose color until you pointed it out. I usually just wear dark/black for winter and light for summer -- maybe you can make a video about when to wear dark vs. light pantyhose? Back to Helen, I think prime color suited her well (green, blue, red). Don't like the yellow one though - especially the spiky short hair (18:20) - the whole look just bothered me. Short hair suited her facial feature much better, in my opinion.

Thank you for another great video! So pear shaped figures are wider at the hips just below the torso, right?? I would think that the waist would look smaller in general with this body type, and the shoulders smaller as well in relation to the lower body. Would I be right in saying this shape would benefit from widening the shoulder area, showcasing the smaller waist and using an A-line dress pattern?

It's interesting that she often wears little jackets over evening wear or longer sleeves. It may be because, as a woman in her mid-60s, upper arms are often not something you want to show off. They can often look crepey, even in someone who obviously looks after herself very well. Not showing off too much skin is a great idea as we get older. I love her. You probably don't remember this unless you're in your 50s like me, but she did a famous interview with the very famous interviewer Michael Parkinson many years ago. He obviously had the hots for her and was really sexist in the interview. She handled it with so much aplomb. Its worth looking up if you havent seen it.
