For plastic paddle blades just glue two 1 cm wide strips of strong plastic to the back of the blade. To make the aluminium poles less floppy put some electrical tape around the joints to take up any space and stiffen the pole joins.

Hear me out on the brush grip, I don't often use mine for anchoring but it does help get my lures out of thick tree limbs while also giving me the second point of contact anchoring my kayak to the ground via anchor and the tree via grip. Using the grip as leverage allows you to shimmy the limb low enough in a couple cases to help a lot. I have also used my to tether myself to my fiancee's kayak easily as she isn't good with knots and i trust this grip far more than any of her knots. The last reason I like it is it has just replaced one tool on my kayak to add a bit more utility. The fact it can be used as a muskie fish grip is another reason I like it. I would agree with all your points on why on its own it may not be worth money but thinking outside the box on this one adds a lot of value for me.

It seems like any gear that says that it is for kayaks is more expensive. My thoughts now are, if I see something that I want for my kayak, I will see if there is something else that can be used or modified easily. I could justify $100 for a light/flag combo. So I made one out of a $5 light, some orange fabric, silver duct tape, and a fiberglass snowbank marker. Another example is rope; if you go to the outdoor section and the hardware section of Walmart, you can find essentially the same rope cheaper in hardware. My biggest advice is that if there is something that you want for your kayak, there is probably a DIY video for it. I understand that not everyone has the time, space, or skills to do some of the projects. But if you can, you can save yourself some money. Second biggest advice, there is no such thing as a "best" product. "Best" is subjective for each person. I bought an inflatable PFD because so many people said it was the best way to go. I ended up buying a traditional style PFD instead because I liked the pockets for my phone, license, etc.

Great creativity with the light/flag mod and thanks for the words of wisdom. I hear ya on the DIY stuff. I love DIY'ing something. Even if I don't save a lot of money doing it... I find that the majority of the time my DIY mod is better quality at the end of that anyways. Thanks Ranko!

I have been kayaking for about 10 years. I started out with the Aruba 10 like alot of people. It served me well for short trips on creeks but later bought a lifetime sit on. I have moved on to my Feel free, along with a HooDoo stingray, all tricked out for fishing bigger waters. Funny thing is, upgrading my paddle I thought was just a waste of money but I broke down and bought a quality paddle. That turned out to be one of the best investments so far. Love your videos.

The brush thing is us old guys fault. We used to use similar clamps from Home Depot or Lowes to attach to a tree or other object. Sometimes it was to hold us in current, sometimes it was to take a quick relief break in the woods. I guess somebody caught on and started marketing them to kayak fishermen. I have a bunch of the clamps because I also use them at the shooting range to hold homemade clay holder targets tot he back board. The rescue steps came from touring kayakers in deep salt water. They really do use them. A lot of touring kayakers are yuppy hippy types and not much on DIY. Not as useful on SOTs. Not all kayakers are fishing. Cheap kayaks are a good entry for people who are not sure this is going to be good for them, and for people who can't afford better. I have some that are pretty old and they are still fine. I store them indoors so they are not subject to much ultra violet light. Heck, when I bought mine there were no fishing kayaks and no kayak specific accessories. I had to drill holes in them and install my own rod holders and other accessories bought from the boat section at Cabelas or Bass Pro.
@wendellfishing
@wendellfishing 2 жыл бұрын
Right on... I would imagine that if you needed a clamp.. that you could get some at HD for a few bucks. I guess rescue steps makes sense for touring kayakers in deep water. @@wendellfishing Just thought of you and this today. Was out on Blue Marsh lake, back in a cove working a bank. I needed to re rig a rod. Every time I tried the wind and current would push me toward overhanging limbs. There was a downed tree in the water and one of the bare branches sticking out was thin enough so I clamped my fish grips to it to hold me in place while I re rigged. I have my fish grips leashed to the yak so it acted as a brush anchor.

Wendell Fishing: I agree with a lot of what you say, especially the crate kit (I returned mine when I saw what I got and bought a $7 crate from Home Depot -- though full disclosure now I use the Hobie H-Crate!) and that brush anchor. But I'm with Captian Cook on the Assault Paddle. In fact, I consider that a "must have" accessory! I have a Hobie Pro Angler 12 360. I use the Assault Paddle to push from shore during launch. And I've used it to grab my line and Savur Outdoors recovery braid line when I flipped and my rods went to the bottom. I'm fat and nearly 70 so have limited mobility and the Assault Paddle helps me grab some things. Branches too. I have had a raccoon hitch a (short) ride in my kayak, and caught a couple of big ol' snapping turtles, but I've never actually used the Paddle to Assault anything!

This video is exactly what me and my buddy talk(and laugh) about after seeing some poor kayaker encircled by countless gadgets and doodads, barely even able to move because of all the crap in the way. And thats not even to mention how cheap so many of these "new" products are especially on Amazon. We use a canoe with trolling motor, minimal gear...rods, small tackle box, we make our own leaders and bring enough variety of artificials for anything we will encounter in our area. Its pretty simple and spending time fishing instead of having so much stuff around us in the way makes for a much more affordable and enjoyable experience. Subbed and Happy New Year!!

Not bad. I have considered the hand paddle. But for this reason only. If I'm working parallel down a bank and throwing a squarebill, the nose of the kayak turns towards the bank. Right now I have to use my whole paddle to make micro steering adjustments between casts. The hand paddle would allow me to make the same adjustment, but with a smaller tool. My kayak is paddle only and does not have a rudder. As for the Yak Gear crate, if you buy just the crate without the accessories, it was selling for under $7 at Academy. It was the cheapest crate around. But that was 3 years ago so prices can change.

I just bought the brush gripper after having it sit in my amazon cart for over a month. This past weekend, took my kayak out with 11-17 moh gusts. Attached it to some mangroves and was able to get on some reds and a snook. I don't think I would've purchased it if I had a kayak with some peddles or a motor, but definitely got my $15 worth on the 1st trip. The rest I completely agree with!

Fished a small lake close to home. I like it. If I didn't I knew I I could sell a $200 boat in a couple of hours vs $1000 one. Don't really go out often so kayak is still very good condition. The striker 4 has is the best value in fishing imho. I made my own brush gripper from a spring clamp, the only water I use it on is a tight little river that’s full of lay downs that will eat anchors. It’s got some weird currents and hard to drift and fish. I clamp on in some slack water and it allows me to thoroughly fish the tail out or pool. Beyond that, yeah, useless.
