In this video I walk around the old town of Veliko Tarnovo and I can tell you it's absolutely gorgeous!
BUT...
On my first night in Veliko Tarnovo I got approached by a man who identified himself as Ivan the archeaologist who was working together with a Harvard professor. He even showed me a bag of coins that he allegedly excavated from a site nearby. All this happened off camera but I caught him on camera the next day and again he was offering me to buy some of his ancient coins. Bizarre!

You are not allowed to sell or keep ancient artifacts/coins in Bulgaria, you need to hand them over to the museums. So, if someone is selling coins on the street, it is likely fake because if he is caught, he will be fined and his coins confiscated if they were real... so the risk is too high for someone to be trying to sell real coins in broad daylight in front of a tourist area... this person should be reported nonetheless... But yea, I don't think there is a law preventing him from selling fake coins. The fact is, Bulgaria is full of ancient artificats and coins... you can literally find them when digging in our backyards... so yes, it is highly possible to get your hands on such coins in Bulgaria, but definitely not on the streets.

I'm pretty sure they were fake but he claimed they were real. He wanted me to touch them so I would know that the coins are real. Pretty fishy if you ask me 😅

Hi, I am from Veliko Tarnovo. Most common scams for tourists are from those motels or old houses for rent. Its like in the other places - different prices, worse conditions and maybe pitpocketing :d Taxi drivers can be a pain in the arse too. Otherwise its a pretty and safe town. I hope you enjoy your stay here :)

He is 100% a scammer, but coins most likely are last century or older. Certain old coins are common enough to be sold as souvenirs. Easy enough to find in the legitimate antique shops in the old part of town.

It's not a scam he selling probably old coins. Bulgaria is third county in Europe with most archaeological finds. My friend sold his ones 2000 years old thracian 100 coins for 10£, but many years ago. So they maybe real!

@@timtense If the coins edition is more than 100k it's not worth. I have one(2nd century AD), I found at my village. I even ask an archaeologist but he said it's not worth, it's to famous.

One of the most iconic historical places in Bulgaria. It was renovated, but is still hugely genuine, so trying to say it's kind of a fake is non-sense. There is so much history about this place - centuries and centuries of history. Anyway, you don't seem to focus your vlog too much on culture.
