As a completely biased Hebron supporter, this show, Tableaux, was an absolute masterpiece and completely deserved the Eagle. Pictures at an Exhibition used in a completely new way, along with the paintings coming alive in 3d, holy crap what a beautiful show. I was bored after 30 secs of Carmel's show, but I don't think I blinked a single time during Avon's. Bravo!

Congratulations to all the hard working young men and women who suburbly executed the performance. Matt, what a great modernized concept of a high school marching band staple, "Pictures at an Exhibition." From concept, to arrangement, to drill design, to execution, it was mesmerizing. (p.s. that color guard was better than some DCI color guards...you all sold the show!).

Look guys, this is a winning show in any state. For those of you unfamiliar with it, this is the style of field marching prevalent in competitive shows now. I am old school as well, but if you look at the book and score now, it is more difficult than ever. Also, if you are wondering how Avon ascended to the pinnacle after a long drought, two words... Matt Harloff. This musical genius is well respected in DCI (Drum Corp International) and has long been considered the King of Brass. He is the supervising Brass Caption Head at Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corp which was awarded the 2023 Jim Ott Best Brass Performance award at the DCI World Championship in August. He is also the new Head director at Avon High School. He is well known for creating continuous walls of sound with no drop off which was obvious in this performance. Congratulations to Matt and the tremendous group of musicians and performers for the award that you most definitely deserved!

Man they deserved this win. This year was really exciting to see Carmel and Avon battle it out! I personally think Carmel deserved general effect, but I’m not mad Avon won! Their program is the most well rounded in the country(great winds, great percussion, great guard). It was only a matter of time before they won
@josephsimons41848 ай бұрын
I was so rooting for someone to beat Carmel and I am glad they did. Easily the best percussion at BOA finals. Can someone explain their show though to me? I don't know what their show is called (Tavlow, Tablow?) and what it is about. It seems in reference to an art form of some sort involving frameworks based on their show design. Their show makes me think of the Blue Knights and the Blue Stars.

Avon just seems to field the highest level of HS marching competency students year over year! I’m so happy for Indiana that we didn’t get to see Carmel with Eagle again! lol. At the risk of being critical or being called a Texas homer I just don’t see Avon or Carmel attempting brass difficulty as those programs that rotate 2-4 years. Both Avon and Carmel can have a visual production rivaled to a DCI top tier program but have a music book that most elite TX feeder junior high programs can master! Am I missing something or has BOA just bought the whole WGI philosophy and adjudication format?
@LamaWithoutMat4 ай бұрын
I say this as a Texas fan, but Carmel plays crazy difficult music and does it insanely clean. I was actually more impressed with Carmel than I was with Hebron since their book is more difficult than Hebron’s despite Hebron being much cleaner than Carmel, which any advanced brass player would agree. No one is doing the challenging symphonic styles Carmel has been doing. Hebron probably is capable, but unfortunately we will never know because they’re stuck with the UIL rubric. Both are actually different. The complexities that Carmel does may not always come across as difficult, unless you have an understanding of music theory and changing meters. If you don’t think Carmel’s music is difficult, then you’re probably not a brass player. Plain and simple.
@johnnychikko38004 ай бұрын
@@LamaWithoutMat Carmel’s music style is one of a kind. No doubt a mature brass player can understand the demand and complexities that come with performing symphonic (Chamber) type books. That being said, Chamber and symphonic music has its refined lush moments but it also has moments of brass valve demand and prowess depending on maturity of arrangement. That’s is what is missing with Carmels books. A comprehensive score that encompasses both demands. For as much as I love Saucedo, it is apparent that he writes and scores according to the strengths and weaknesses of the program. Yes BA, TS and the rest of the Texas elites maybe and easily pull off a Carmel book but there is NO way that the greyhound brass section can pull off anything Hebron has fielded (2019,2021-23). To say otherwise makes it obvious that you are probably not a mature level brass player. Simple! Lack of LOS intonation exposure is another reason I’m convinced that Carmel and Avon usually musically pull off Nat’s. Books that their colleagues from the south bring are just seem equal in demand. It’s not that apparent but It is much harder for an untrained ear to hear intonation, modal and voice issues when you have reverb and echo in an enclosed environment . Plus BOA doesn’t really adjudicate and score on intonation which is odd tbh. BOA judges a more subjective experience according to the handbooks I’ve read. Probably why the artsy pageantry shows seem to do so well? This is not meant to be a comprehensive response to your claim but I want to leave you with an ISSMA recording of Carmel just a few weeks before Nats. Weather aside you tell me if you still hear maturity, clarity, richness of sound and finesse or any kind of brass valve demand. Yes they are a good high school program and visually DCI level so please don’t get my intentions or comments wrong. Carmel won State if I remember correctly but Avon at Nats was just a notch above! They deserved the win. Carmel ISSMA outdoor performance kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mt6eZ5SX05e1p6M.htmlsi=3zHT3_fnqyqldpu6
