Avi has said that he likes so many elements of different genres that he incorporates in his music. Some folk and bluegrass elements for sure in this one. Avriel and the Sequoias is Avi Kaplan. The former name was when Avi was with ptx. There is only one EP under the name. 5 songs and the Hey Ya single. Avi wrote this about the first flush of love. In 2019, he has a part 2 about the ending. Avi has no clear cut box of music. I class him as Americana. A little bit of folk, country, with a smidge of rock and blues for good measure. I love your enthusiasm.

Great reaction, thank you! Reactors often struggle to place Avi in a specific genre. Shortly after I discovered his music, I dubbed it Avi-cana and am always happy when I see other people use that word. A fellow fan said that “Avi loves to keep us mortals guessing what the wizard is up to”. As an Avi-cionado, I know that it is always something wonderful. And now you simply have to add his melancholy and thoughtful “Sweert Adeline part 2” to your list, I’m sure you’ll appreciate it.

Definitely folk/bluegrass. This EP, recorded when Avi was still with PTX, definitely showcases his higher register and more unique sound. I would imagine he wanted to sing pretty much without using his bass (at least not much). He has stated that it took him a bit to explore the capabilities of his voice and find the sound that feels so uniquely Avi. Unfortunately part two of this song is not anywhere near as joyful, but it is a beautiful part two nonetheless. Technically, Avriel and the Sequoias is just him. His friends only joined him for a few of the songs. He has hinted that they might try to collaborate on something in the future. The instrument, I believe is actually a banjitar - looks like a banjo, sounds like a banjo, but is chorded the same as a guitar (so guitar players can get the sound without having to learn a new instrument). The one instrument is a form of something called an ugly stick. I love the use of it here.

This is such a great song, there was a comment a while ago the person said Avi’s music should be called AVICARNA, there is a video on YT shot by the photographer of this and or HAYA it shows them finding the location etc it’s worth a watch.
