Leonardo AW139 (AgustaWestland AW139) is a midsize helicopter, developed and manufactured by the Italian company Leonardo since the early 2000s. Designed to be versatile, the AW139 comes in a variety of both civilian and military modifications. At the same time, due to its capabilities, the helicopter is considered to be one of the best in its class, which ensures high ratings from the operators and demand all over the world.
The AW139 is manufactured at the Leonardo plant in Italy, as well as at production sites in the USA and Russia. By the end of 2019, the total fleet of helicopters around the world exceeded 1000 units.

So many of aviation’s greatest or most exciting aircraft are from a bygone era, so it feels great to watch a video about an engineering triumph that’s in the early chapters of its story right now! The AW609 looks insanely cool too, I hope that project comes to fruition. Thanks for the video, Sky!

As somebody who lived in Maryland for a while I thought it was nice also. I notice it makes a very distinct sound when it flies over. Just like the previous Maryland State police helicopters.

The first military customer for this helicopter was the Irish Air Corps, having taken delivery of the first machine from an initial batch of 6 examples I August 2006.

I actually leased one of the AW 139 with the VIP Configuration for three years. With the exception of the noise level it was as comfortable as riding in a Rolls Royce Phantom.

The AW-139 is now the fire fighting helicopter of choice used by the Los Angeles Fire Department. They now have 3 in service and a 4th on order. So far, great service record!

@Skyships Eng this is a fantastic video; the best presentation and full review of the AW139 anywhere. Bell really blew it by leaving the consortium 15 years ago. Now they have been announcing "coming soon!" for their 525 Relentless for eight years...and still, deliveries are years away -- and the AW139 will still be a better machine for less money, with a long operational record. This production was very professionally done. Congrats!

This is just the perfect multi-role helicopter. It has good flight characteristics, it’s relatively low-priced when compared to other helicopters, and it has good versatility in all tasks it was built for!

You make the best documentaries about aviation and the piece about the AW139 is the best by far. I really hope you can make one about the AW109SP too, the 139’s baby brother, since it transformed Agusta as a real OEM player and it celebrated its 50th anniversary since its first flight this August.

It looks an awful lot like a Bell. Didn't AW originally turn to Bell in the design phase? And isn't Bells main plant in Arlington, Texas in the US?

More helicopter videos please! One of my favourite helis now! Here in Malaysia, there are quite a number of agencies using the AW139; the police air unit, fire department (AW139 and AW189), and the most beautiful of them all, the coast guard (Agensi Penguatkuasaan Maritim Malaysia or APMM). The Malaysian Navy will also be renting some AW139s as well while waiting for new additional fleet.

The Primus Epic is not a flight control system. It's an avionics package or rather an IAS, an Integrated Avionics System. A flight control system is what links the pilot controls (cyclic stick, pedelas and collective) to the main and tail rotors.

If any airframe is worthy to replace the Bell-222 as Airwolf in a reboot, it's this beauty! The ubiquitous use of the AW139 lends to Airwolf's idea of being able to hide in plain sight, looking like any other civilian aircraft, while it's customization options make any externally-visible modifications easily excusable.

You encapsulated all that is relevant into an interesting, informative and entertaining video which was well presented and narrated. Bell's decision to sever their involvement and investment in the 139 project has proven to be one of their greatest business failures! It beggars belief that this hugely experienced helicopter manufacturer could get it so wrong!

I think Australia use these as Police and ambulance choppers, at least in Victoria. They are quite loud on the ground, if they are indeed what I think they are. A low rumble/hum, then the whine of the turbo as it flies overhead. I think it's the one. Anybody?

Are you a maintenance operator or do you just dislike AW/Leonardo? Do you have experience with these concerns? Gulf had a tailboom problem a while ago and there have been some baggage compartment deck replacements. Never heard of an "engine mounting deck" being replaced, largely because the engines are mounted to fittings, not the deck. It seems like you have an axe to grind.

@@crazycarl00 former AW139 (actually at the time of purchase a AB139) operator of an early SN. Pilots refused to fly the aircraft due to continuing safety of flight issues and had motor deck (where the mounts mount to) completely removed and rebuilt as well as additional strengthening to the tail boom ... so yeah, I have some experience with the model. We sold the aircraft and upgraded to S-76D.

The Bell 412 would rival it. It might be a good but older...but it's still an alternative.

The Bell 412 is certainly a rival in the security and SAR roles but for business transport idk however with the airbus H-160 and H-175 that came on the market in 2015 and the new bell 525 that either came or is very close to coming out the AW-139 has some competition however the AW-139 has the advantage of being a proven design

@@jameson1239 The 139 does have it's advantages in some areas .Yes it's more suited to VIP transport,tending offshore oil rigs etc and is a bit faster in performance., But when it comes to proven designs....id say the 412 is better proven and certainly more rugged considering it has it's origins in the UH-1 that go back along time. There is no other chopper as proven or as iconic as the Huey..

nice video and nice heli. i think they shouldn't have hanged its name. leonardo doesn't sound as much of a heli company name, as nice and as imposing as augusta westland. naming leonardo feels like a lot of ego from the new owner.

Ahem S92, I could tell you the trouble Cambridge and whirlwind had with theirs. Great helo but for the money I'd go S92. It's hard to argue with the birth family of the helo. Was a bit of a stink here in MD. The troopers did their type training locally out of FDK. For months they were restricted from IMC. More over MD got a bit raped on the price, but that's government, why pay list price when you can pay more?
