This song was very famous in USSR during old times. Even today in Russian restaurant you can hear this song. USSR people were crazy about raj kapoor in those times and his film awaara was a massive success there as films theme matches with socialist ideology. Even when you sing this song in Russia most people will recognise the song movie and raj kapoor

Yes it's truth. I'm German Girl born in USSR now i live in Germany for 31 years. Actors like Raj Kapoor Rishi Kapoor and Mithun Dharmendra and Hema Malini are very femous back then and now and the films like Aawara, Shree 420, Bobby, Disco dancer, Seeta aur Geeta...... are very femous. Also in the 1987 Govinda became very femous and I'm huge Govinda fan since then

Even to this day if any Russian/Ex-Soviet citizen sees any Indian, the first thing they do after greeting is singing this song😂 "Awara" has been re-made countless times in Russian and other Central Asian/East European languages. Raj Kapoor is surely the greatest Indian filmstar ever.

I was in Italy and an old tourist from Russia sang this song super quickly when he got to know I am Indian. He was super famous in many parts of the world especially in Russia. Its interesting. Mainly bcz his films always depicted socialist values.

The composers Shankar Jaikishan were the first people who took Indian music to the global audience. Awara Hoon and Mera Joota Hai Japani are still the most popular songs in erstwhile Soviet countries, Turkey and Eastern Europe. My Turkish friend tells me there is not person in Turkey who doesnt know of this song. Her mother confirmed it as well. I would highly recommend reading the comment section on some of Raj Kapoor's songs. Most comments are in Turkish, Russian and other Eastern European languages.

Guys please also start reacting to Shashi Kapoor. He was the first of his kind to do cross over films and he only acted in bollywood films because he wanted his father's theater in Prithvi Theater to survive. In Mumbai Prithvi Theater is still one of a kind and survived so many generation.

Moscow Radio was still playing this song till early nineties....this is the most famous Indian movie in Russia....Russian bands still make cover version of this song....need I say more about this song or movie...one more thing...all the songs you mentioned Rain song,teaching song etc. are from Shree 420... although I think you have reacted to one or two other songs from this movie.....
