There is another great quote from Albert Einstein which can be applied to understand the power that consciousness hands out to mind: "The most important decision we ever make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or a hostile universe." What movie you gonna watch depends what your eyes are gonna see, so there is something awareness can do when the movie becomes violent.. it turns away. And simply like that it changes the channel

@@jjm2948 the funny thing is i dont know what he really meant LoL. But you made a great point there. I was kind of aiming in general. Why is the content of consciousness such? I mean, we do live in a universe governed by the law of the fittest. As such all species must stuggle to survive. That makes it a hostile universe... and look at the state of human mind.. i wonder if it is possible at all to concieve a friendly one. Would that be something like paradise? Or a universe of just sound and harmony, or a universe of colours and shades.. anyway.. you made a good point on quitting the role of a victim. It seems that was what Albert was really talking about

Love of music From the point of Awareness the friendliness or hostility of the world is irrelevant, because it is a transcendence of the dualistic view point of the human mind. Once that is firmly established, that is, when awareness awakens to itself from the dualistic view point of a human mind then and only then can the peace and harmony begin to ripple "outwards" into the "world" (the world is but itself from the awakened awareness perspective) and anyone open to resonating with that will do so. Also awareness does not turn away from anything, as all things are made of itself. The violence is also happening in awareness but only from a illusory viewpoint of a human's mind. Awareness simply is pure allowing and so it is all inclusive of all experiences happening in it. The awakened mind simply changes the channel's content by being spontaneous in its expression while being compassionate.

Here i go again :D lol There's a verse in the Tao Te Ching that beautifully explains why awareness gets 'consumed' by thoughts. Rupert started beautifully. Awareness is an empty field. The verse goes something like this- colour blinds the eye. Sound deafens an ear. Thought dulls the mind etc... As soon as thought appears in mind for example, awareness is no longer an empty field but is focused at an occurance and from there the mind gets excited and does its thing. When the mind is done, awareness becomes empty again but soon enough another seeming 'observational' thought appears which again rattles the mind into another action, a process, and we get a feeling that the awareness is identified with the proceses of mind when in fact the mind is constantly busy engaging in the everyday living. There is no you in reality so how could you ever be identified with anything and HAVE an ego. Awareness doesnt have ego. It can not idetify with thought. It always is what it is - empty field of knowing

Love of music do you really think your amateur reading of the Tao Te Ching brings any value to the words in this video? Gotta love those self-important people in the KZfaq comments, trying to outsmart even a Spira or a Tolle. Are you a self-realized author of multiple books and original meditations who travels the world with his satsangs and leads people into meditation and back to themselves? I think his message is loud and clear without whatever you have to add to it.

That there is something like an awareness in which thoughts appears is also just a thougt. The habit of tracing thoughts back to presupposed screen, on which they are supposedly appearing, makes the belief in real existence of that screen (awareness) firm and consistant. Outside of this loop, there is nothing like awareness and there is no need for it anyway.
@kiranarao2463
@kiranarao2463 5 жыл бұрын
Aleš Us Tracing the thoughts back to a presupposed screen of Awareness is only in the earlier stage of exploration. There is no screen separate from experience. Separating the screen from experience is just used as a step for the purpose of teaching. When the exploration deepens it is seen that all thoughts are simply modulations of the knowing. Meaning, thoughts are known because it is made up of the knowing substance or awareness. In awareness all perceptions, sensations, thoughts and feelings are effortlessly and choicelessly made known, as they are but a modulation of itself!
@ales1us1
@ales1us1 5 жыл бұрын
@@kiranarao2463 Yes, perceptions, sensations, thoughts and feelings are one and the same happening. They are not made of some common or universal substance, they are simply a flow, a stream of happening - of is-ness, so to speak. And yes, knowiledge of it, as well as the knower, are just "modulations" of that stream. Knowledge is (metaphorically) some kind of whirl or feedback loop in that stream, yet only after the apparent center of the whirl begins to functions as the referential point of the mirroring, of the self-reflection - self-awareness. Therefore awareness of the environment (of the stream of happening) as well as awareness generally (awareness as such), is merely a functional extension and externalisation of basicall self-reflection, self-awareness. Yet , of course, even saying that there is an is-ness, as somekind of substratum, is already saying too much. What there is is indescribable, totally unknown and unknowable.

The experience here is that awareness and that which is awared... arise together as one. So Awareness does not seem to be eternal to me... the awareness and experience are one. If awareness is infinite and eternal... so is experience.
@mikefoster5277

I guess it depends what you mean by "Awareness". That's why, unlike Rupert, I make the distinction between awareness and consciousness. So what you appear to be referring to as 'Awareness', I personally call consciousness - the 'stuff' that experience is 'made out of'. But experience, and therefore consciousness, must surely be limited to its content - that which is appearing in any given moment? So, as you're suggesting, consciousness [or what you're calling Awareness], therefore can't be infinite and eternal. But of course, that doesn't mean that the _potential_ for experience isn't unlimited. So I'm saying there's a difference between the 'actual' - ie. what is currently appearing/being experienced - and the potential for that. And that fundamental capacity/potentiality for experience is what I call Awareness. You might then say, "Ok, but aren't you just playing with words here?" And the answer is "No". Why? Because there clearly must be a difference between the non-dual state - ie. unified, infinite, eternal - and the dualistic state - ie. the experience/consciousness _of_ a limited object or event (whether that be material or non-material). And I'm calling that original, non-dual state the 'Awareness', and its own emergent, dualistic state the 'consciousness'. Hopefully that offers a potential solution to the problem for you.

In a paragraph, are you able to distinguish Nisargadatta's philosophy from Ramana's? Did Ramana also believe that 'I am' is not the absolute, as Nisargadatta suggests? Thanks Namaste 🙏💟

To answer your question, I'm sure both of those gentlemen would have said not to become bogged down by beliefs and philosophies; but rather that their own respective pointings were merely to encourage you to discover the truth for and within yourself. And why? Because that is ultimately how truth works. How could it be any other way?

Thanks, but Nisargaddata states that I - the absolute (parabrahman/awareness) is not consciousness, but higher still?! How does one distinguish? thanks x
@mikefoster5277
@mikefoster5277 5 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, the absolute/awareness is the pure, original non-dual state - the infinite, eternal Oneness - the ultimate reality. At some point, that non-dual state suddenly becomes aware of itself [it feels, "I am"] and thereby automatically creates the dualistic state of consciousness and experience - the knower and the known - which, in turn, produces the whole 'physical' universe and its contents, including 'us'. We could therefore say that the initial "I am" is the first step _out of_ the non-dual absolute reality, into the dualistic world of conscious experience - "I am this, I am that".

So therefore, given the three levels/states in question, is it logical to assume that we cannot know further than ourselves as consciousness ('level 2') knowing itself and the experience of mind? In other words, although we maybe the parabrahman/supreme state we simply cannot know it, and can only know the consciousness level that knows itself as "I am"?. In which case why speculate at all in an unfalsifibale state?! (the absolute) It seems that only consciousness is verifiable by empirical experience? 😂🙏💟

You experience Mahasamadhi every night in dreamless sleep. Even "cosmic consciousness" is the same as awareness of phenomenon and no more limited or unlimited than human awareness depending on your perspective. You have never been apart from God so where would the individual merge into? The individual is a thought based phenomenon. Who knows this phenomenon?

The term “awareness” is too associated with human subjectivity to be appropriate in the context in which Rupert uses it - too associated with personal interiority and thus too easily commandeered by the ego. Same as his use of “knowing” and “consciousness.” Human all too human. Far better IMO, to speak, as Heidegger does, of the “clearing of Being,” or simply “Being.” Prior to the derivative “I am” was “Is.”
@deepakchughani2666

You are kinda saying that awareness connotes something that is different from that which is aware? And again when we say that which is aware, we are sort of referring to an object, whereas when we say awareness, we are referring to a quality. Perhaps the term "Presence" is more apt or simply the term "Atma".
@johnhannon8034

Tom Slijkerman To try to clarify - it seems to me that Rupert’s use of terms applicable to human psychology as pointers to pure undifferentiated being risks the twin dangers of solipsism and ego inflation (taking the transpersonal personally), as “awareness,” “knowing” and “consciousness” all too readily accommodate the proprietary prefix “my” whereby we remain stuck in the Cartesian theatre. But then, as you say, “language will always get in the way here,” and pointing beyond it is never going to be easy.
